Google declares war on Amazon. (1 Viewer)

We saw it coming years ago - Google vs. Amazon for world domination.  The winner will then change it's name to OmniCorp.

I'd like to insert a "dis" in your post

I hope they weaken each other so we can get some proper competition back in
Google search is fantastic plus android provides competition for iphone.  Amazon is all kinds of awesome.

What's your beef with them?

I dislike their attempts at creating monopolies, particularly vertically integrated monopolies (same goes for Apple, Microsoft etc).

You are aware that you are not a customer of google, right? Their customers are the ones that buy the data the get on you (whether you want them to or not).

I have no problem with the product I can use. I have a problem with the things surrounding that.

Yea, those are solid points, but I think that horse is out of the barn so if the backend product is useful to us, that may be as good as we can hope for.  The same can be said for Comcast, Verizon, the TV networks, Walmart, etc.  All either manipulate consumers, use consumer information, or harm the competitive landscape.  It's the American way apparently.

The EU are attempting to capture the horse again with the new General Data Protection Regulation (comes into effect ¨May next year).

Basically it says that the owner of your data is you which has a few implications.

First of all you can ask a company for all the data they have collected on you and you can ask them to delete it.

Second, everyone collecting person sensitive data (and this is very broadly defined) must ensure that for each item the user accepts that they collect it, which over time will mean that free apps likely will die - or certainly beccome less prevalent

That means you now can have all the data ever collected on you. What will happen then is that services will spring up that for a cut will sell the parts of your data you don't think is private. This is not speculation, some such business models have already been launched.

The EU have already said they are willing to bring out the big stick on this (daily fines of up to two percent of your gross turnover for non compliance)

Will it be succesful? Don't know, but I think it will end up having an effect certainly in Europe, but also elsewhere for companies that do business there.

Google has just recently announced that they are starting to crack down on collection of data in apps that run on android not needed for the execution of the app. Such as letting your note app have access to geo location and camera....

I'm sure this will all play out just fine. When we are able to access over 500 websites on one provider but also 750 on another!!!

Wonder if/when they are going to do it to apple?
No way they have the balls to do that... That's cutting 1/2 your traffic and likely opening the door WIDE for a competitor to crush you. That horse is out of the barn.

Amazon is still small enough they can try to cut their legs out from under their devices before they get too big.

Also, I guess there is no way for them to stop you from using the internet YouTube on fire.
They might be able to deny based on what gets sent to youtube site.   Certainly if you're using stock browser on fire, they'll be able to deny any requests based on that.

I'm glad we're a Roku household. This silly war will definitely keep me from buying into either of their ecosystems. And if Amazon pulls their app off of Roku for any reason, I will seriously consider dropping Amazon Prime. I was thinking about it anyway since Best Buy, Walmart, Target, etc generally offer free shipping and more competitive prices these days.

I've been using Chrome on my Fire for awhile now. It's my go to porn loader

I can't believe some 9-year-old techie hasn't figured out a workaround 3rd party app yet.
Lots of work arounds available for this.  I have the google play store installed on my fire tablet which allows me to install everything google; Chrome, Gmail, Youtube, whatever.

IIRC, the only problem I encountered with this method was getting the Fire to communicate when hooked up to the PC.  You have to lock, then unlock the screen on the Fire a couple of times.  I never got the ad remover to work, but, the google store works just fine.

I remember sideloading the google store apk on the firestick. Assuming it's the same method. If this becomes a pita it might motivate me to get the nvidia shield :flex:

they did not really declare war and i do not think we will see a google army of doughey middle management types marching on a amazon distribution center so nice hyperbole mr original poster but i think i am not buying it take that to the bank bromigos

We didn't declare war on Vietnam, but that didn't mean it wasn't on.  Take that to the bank, bro chi minh.

I have an nVida Shield and I love it. But the play store is a pared down version to suit that particular device. You still end up side loading apps.

Did you get the shield mainly for gaming? That was the only reason I went with fire tv. Comparable specs minus the gaming side and price
