Gore falling further - Jonas Jennings out (1 Viewer)

I searched and didn't see this yet. As if the SF OL couldn't get worse and the Ravens are next, Gore might as well run into a brick wall.

Left tackle Jennings takes indefinite absence from 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers will have a new starting quarterback this week and, unexpectedly, a new left offensive tackle protecting his blind side.

Coach Mike Nolan said that seventh-year veteran tackle Jonas Jennings will miss at least the Sunday game against the Baltimore Ravens after being excused for a personal matter. The issue for Jennings, stressed Nolan, is not injury-related. It is not known how long Jennings, who is expected to remain in the Bay Area, will be away from the team.

For now, the 49ers have characterized his excused absence as indefinite.

"It's a private matter, and I don't want to say any more about it," Nolan told local reporters. "Although I don't know an exact time right now -- we have the bye after this week -- he will come back at some point."

Third-year veteran Adam Snyder, who has started 14 games in his career at both tackle and guard, will replace Jennings in the lineup. He will be counted on to protect veteran Trent Dilfer, who is replacing injured starting quarterback Alex Smith, from the typically fierce Ravens' pass rush.

San Francisco surrendered six sacks in last week's loss to Seattle and Dilfer is not as mobile as Smith, who is expected to miss two or three weeks with a separated shoulder.

Nolan conceded the departure of Jennings, who did not practice on Thursday, was abrupt. Neither Jennings nor his agent could be reached for comment.

Jennings, 29, signed with the 49ers as an unrestricted free agent from Buffalo, netting a seven-year, $36 million contract that included $12 million in guarantees. His performance in two seasons in San Francisco has been marked at times by inconsistency and injuries. The former University of Georgia standout has missed 16 games in two seasons with injuries.

A third-round draft choice of the Bills in 2001, Jennings played four seasons in Buffalo before joining the 49ers. He started the first four games of this season, and for his career has played in 72 games, all as a starter.

Jennings was playing like #%!* as it was. If he was playing like he did last year then it would be a blow, but as is, Snyder is probably an upgrade over what Jennings was giving the team. But that's not saying much.

Local sports mouths have clearly chalked up the lack of offense to the o-line. Can Smith be that bad? Perhaps... but Gore/DJax/Battle/Vernon is enough arsenal.

I think it's also Nolan...the play calling has been so reserved and uninventive is appauling at times. Whatever Norv is doing wrong in SD, could have worked better in SF.

I just don't see much room for turning things around significantly, unless Nolan takes a huge "tug on the wheel" and steers the offense on a different course. Either the playcalling and/or they don't have the talent on the o-line to pull off what they are calling. Plain and simple.

Jonas Jennings is not that great anyway, he is an adequate OT. He got a monster contract to come to SF, but was grossly overpaid. This is a definitely a loss to the Niners, but not anywhere near as big a loss as the Rams losing Pace or the Ravens losing Ogden.

I could have sworn the off season write-ups mentioned Jennings as a plus. If he really was playing that bad, why is he still starting. It amazes me that people (not this post) sometimes try and paint it as a positive. Also, of course it isn't as big a loss as Pace and Ogden, the 49ers have the worst offense in the league right now, so they can't rank any worse without Jennings.

He play really well last year when healthy. The whole OLine did. This year he hasn't played well. The whole OLine hasn't played well.

SF guys- do you see Gore turning it around (statistically, of course) over the course of this year? I'm suprised he hasn't had a 100yd game yet, as hard as he appears to run. Does the loss and/or lack of production from Davis really hurt Gore? Did SEA know something when they traded DJax within their own division? Was it a matter of just not respecting Alex Smith as a QB- or the effectiveness of DJax? Can Trent "freakin" Dilfer do enough to atleast give Gore some lanes? Will they lean on Gore more than ever? What a mess.
