"Don't grumble, give a whistle!"
...for a "rolling stop" at a stop sign. Used to be that you flipped the ticket over, checked the codes for the fine amount if you wanted to plead "Guilty" and pay the stated fine by mail. Not so fast, anymore. Now- here in Suffolk County, The Island of Long- you flip the ticket, check the box next to "Guilty" and mail it in to the courts. I do so, and week later receive this statement from the court:

Ticket # Statute/Section Charge Disposition Fine Admin. Fee SurChg

XXXXXX VTL 11720A STOP SIGN VIOL Fine/SC $50.00 $50.00 $88.00

TOTAL DUE: $188.00 :o

WTF!? What used to be a "reasonable" fine now has become this bloated, bureaucratically created cash grab. Does anyone else see the problem here?? Now- instead of handling my mailed check, logging my plea and cashing my check- someone has to handle my mail, and log my plea. Then someone has to create the above statement. Then someone has to mail me that statement. Aaaand then someone has to handle my mailed check, log and cash my check.

 :wall:

Freakin' ridiculous...

I once got hit for $700 for going 80 in a 55, about twenty feet after the speed limit had changed from 70, during off-hours on an 8 lane highway with about 5 other cars on it.

Funny thing is that I used to drive a sports car and speed around everywhere dangerously, with a radar detector and the whole shebang. Never got a ticket. Since switching to suburban dad mode driving around a sedan safely I've gotten about 4 tickets for stupid stuff like that.

Got one a few years ago for just stopping over the line when I was about to make a right. The cop basically implied that I only stopped at that point because I saw him there. I thought about fighting it in court, but I figured it was a waste of time.

It cost about $130 in fines, and since I had another recent moving violation, it raised my insurance by about $80 a month for about a year. I figure it cost me over $1,000 all said and done...####### bull ####.

Not sure if it's the same there but out here you have to do traffic school or your insurance will go up. Why so quick to plead guilty?

My husband had the same thing happen. He fought the ticket and won by claiming that it was an illegal speed trap. Come to find out in Michigan they have to post that the speed limit is changing if it is going to change by more then 5 MPH. If it isn't posted then you have to be given time to adjust your speed without endangering other drivers.

Walter Sobchak: OVER THE LINE!
Smokey: Huh?
Walter Sobchak: I'm sorry, Smokey. You were over the line, that's a foul.
Smokey: Bull####. Mark it 8, Dude.
Walter Sobchak: Uh, excuse me. Mark it zero. Next frame.
Smokey: Bull####, Walter. Mark it 8, Dude.
Walter Sobchak: Smokey, this is not 'Nam. This is bowling. There are rules.

Was probably in a hurry to get home and place a bet on the Lions.

Nope it was in April =)

I wish the Town/State would go with a pay double and it won't go on your record option. I don't care about the 100-200, it's the impact on your insurance that's te screw.

Do they tack insurance points onto that for a moving violation to make the total cost closer to $1,000 over time?
I am guessing the OP will see an increase at some point. In Colorado, that offense nets you 2 points off your license.

I have been driving for close to 30 years and I have received two tickets--I have fought both and won each time. The first ticket

was for exactly the OP's charge. I had a great defense and was ready to roll at trial, but the officer failed to appear and I won by default.

Bottom line is don't plead guilty ever--always try and get it knocked down. Unless your record is terrible, you will get a better deal as long as you show up at court, dress decent and don't act the fool when you get there.

I make more then $188 in a day. It isn't worth taking a day off and using it to spend half the day in a courtroom.

Kind of ironic.

You would be amazed at how people show up at court. There isn't a day that goes by where several people get jailed for coming to court drunk. Or the people that come to court in their PJs and wonder why they are not taken seriously or (one of the most common) the litigants who bring their new "fiancé" to their final divorce hearing with their spouse and wonder why the hearing gets heated.

People are just generally stupid....

We know you aren't very good at the academic side of things.

BTW, it's highly amusing that you don't think you're anything more than a troll yourself. It's cute.

Weird, there's not a whit of "defensive" in my post, nor is there wit in yours. In fact, it's the opposite of defensive and can be easily taken tacitly as me acknowledgment what you're calling me. It's literally amazing how much you can get wrong and prove how little you know in seven short words.

You get nothing if you stop. Clearly you were wrong about the cost of getting a ticket. Sort of like sales tax. It's part of the deal.
