if the bed is a rockin', don't hardly come knockin'.The bed is rock hard.
Get it right:if the bed is a rockin', don't hardly come knockin'.
is hard, rock the bed.if the bed is a rockin', don't hardly come knockin'.
Because it's a simile.Like overuse of "that", the word "as" can be thrown out in this scenario without losing any meaning. I voted "The bed is hard as a rock" for both.
Grammar as a self-aggrandizing thing is useless. If the meaning is clear and maintains a useful organized structure I'm all for it.
The phrase "is hard as a rock" works perfectly as a stand alone simile and doesn't need the extra "as". In fact, why use the first as? "The bed is hard" is what you are stating, so why the need to throw "as" in there? Completely unnecessary.
are these the generally illiterate parts of the country?I wonder if this is regional. Some areas may commonly drop the first as.
