Grand Theft Auto ... Ok for 11 year old? (1 Viewer)

SHIZNITTTT

So one of my twins was asking about getting GTA for PS4. I have heard awful things about this game, but thought I would ask the collective FFA guys/gals opinion. "IS" there a setting that blocks bad stuff? OR, should I just skip this game all together?

Can he handle nudity, strip clubs, drug deals, drive bys, violence, guns, murder and robberies?

I vote no

Not for my son.

He is 10...though, typically younger than most in his class (started him when he was 4 with a Sept birthday).

But has several friends that play things like that and COD and stuff.

I just don't think he is ready for such things.

You know your own kid but yea, no. GTA is one of the few that I'd say at least 16. And even then I don't know if you're mature enough.

This game isnt any more graphic than footage commonly aired on television.

Its fine.

Frankly, if any person of any age has a problem separating reality from a video game, they will eventually snap from something anyway.

The kid isnt going to be mentally warped from it.

A game usnt going to do anything. If he likes typical 11 year old boy stuff then he will be delighted by hookers, drugs and cavalier gun violence. Stuff happening every day, in every city in the world, that he will be exposed to at some point in his life.

Kids his age fight in wars.

This is just GTA

One great thing about GTA V is that there's plenty of non-violent, non-crime related things to do in the game. When my daughter would watch me play, I would just start doing that and hold off missions until she was gone. The downside is that language is still pretty bad even if you're just cruising the city and listening to the radio. So it's hard to find anything completely squeaky clean for situations like that other than not playing it at all with her around. I wouldn't even consider letting her play it herself.

my 12 yo asked the same question yesterday.

my immediate answer was no, not until you're 18

I haven't played since the original, saw this thread and thought maybe I could be wrong.

Thanks guys!

I am having a hard time because there are so many kids that play it.

My son thinks I am a hard ### because I won't let him. He even brought in the "If I can't play it, you shouldn't be playing it either dad." I told him when he is 18 then he can.

As far as a 11-12 year old, hell no. As far as waiting till they're 18, that's probably a bit extreme too. I can't think of a mentally stable 16 year old who can't handle the worst video games I've known. Now going straight to GTA from lets say, Mario Galaxy may be a bit extreme, but if they're already comfortable with Teen rated games, and they're already seeing R rated movies, GTA doesn't have anything they're not exposed to already at 16.

Also, OP is a troll and doesn't actually consider letting an 11 year old play this game.

This is astounding to me.

I was talking with a woman last year and she confessed that she lets her 7 year old son play it all the time. I just stared at her, not sure whether she was joking or not. Nope. She was 100% serious.

She had absolutely no idea why this would be a bad idea.

And from what I hear, this isn't uncommon.

Which is depressing.

Shocked at how conservative most of you are.

If you dont think your 11 yo son can handle a video game just go ahead and buy him a sun dress and set a place at the table every holiday for his "friend" with frosted hair

Well damn, I hadn't thought of it like that...let the hooker killing begin!

There are stunt montages on Youtube that are G-rated. Nothing says wholesome family entertainment like a Ferrari doing a quintuple backflip off a mountainside and landing on a moving train.

Yeah, my son went to a birthday party yesterday. He is 8. He plays too many video games, but it is basically all sports and Lego game type stuff. He came home yesterday and said he and his friends were playing games at the party. Said he did not kmow the name of the game but proceeded to describe GTA.

Wtf? A group of 8 year olds? Even if you let your kids play that #### at that age, it baffles me that someone would let a group of kids do it in that setting when they dont know them or know what they are allowed to play.

it isnt a matter of "handling" it, it is a matter of why would they need to play it at that age?

If you have kids, i hope you are saving up for bail. ;)

Its a great learning tool...you never know ...he may have a natural propensity to be a great criminal...a future in car jacking ...pimping...shooting cops and running pedestrians over with a car

Stuff like this happens all the time and people generally don't flip out. But if a teacher shows a film to a 6th grade class (11 year olds) that happens to have a topless scene (that she didn't remember), then parents go nuts, it makes the local papers, and people are calling for the teacher's head.

Yet the same people will let their kid play a game that's the equivalent to letting their 7 year old watch Scarface.

Kids bring these little game players to school and play games at recess.

I told my first grader no for a year. A flat out are you kidding me type no.

A couple months ago, I let him play and sat there. He can't do the missions and likes to just drive around. He thought it was fun to get into street fights and run people over, loved slamming into street signs and walls.

He got bored in two days.

Now he doesn't want to play.

It's very difficult being the parent NOT allowing kids to do something everyone is doing. Further I hate driving by recess and seeing every kid on these things rather than running but the school does do 8 gym classes a week so that soothes my frustration with the "run, be a kid" type stuff. Recently, I've run into a couple parents who did about the same as me and their kids also aren't really interested in the game.

We got to talk about following a trend and doing what everyone else does and there was some decent parenting discussions brought up. Now I can see some kids playing tag which is oddly nice.

We never had the strippers and all the risque stuff to deal with. As far as the little violence he did, the zombie games are way worse and known fiction game violence is easier for me as a parent to allow. I mean I'm not explaining an angry bird got hurt and he doesn't exactly covet throwing birds around... there's something OK with far fetched stuff.

This infuriated me for a year, I'm very thankful how it all worked out and that he just drove.
