Greg Childs: Lammey vs. Waldman (1 Viewer)

There is a drastically divergent opinion on Greg Childs between Cecil and Matt. I know Cecil's is based on his senior year and post-season all-star work, while Matt is basing his opinion on pre-injury form and latest pro-day workout. It would be great to hear from both of them as to their current opinion and if either has moved towards their colleague's position?

Just throwing another professional opinion into the ring here ... Frank Coyle of Draft Insiders has Child's rated as the 22nd WR in this class and the 3rd best Arkansas wideout that was drafted. It's worth mentioning that Childs and Wright each have the same evaluation grade (Adams is 7 points higher). Adams is ranked 12th, comes in just ahead of Childs at 21. For comparison purposes, that puts Childs (and Wright) at the same score as T.J Graham and Marvin Jones.

That's pretty much it - pre-injury Childs looked like a more potent version of Malcom Floyd. post-injury Childs has lacked the same edge in his game, but if you think he gets back close to or at 100% in year 2 (looks like the Vikes do, or at least think it's possible), then Childs could be the big outside receiver this offense lacks. Jerome Simpson is an obstacle, but his suspension could get Childs on the field very early with a shot to impress. I like him in the late 2nd/early 3rd of rookie drafts

The reason Greg Childs is a great sleeper is because he has big time upside for where he gets drafted in rookie drafts.

6'3 212 41.5 vertical 4.41 40 yard dash. Childs has good hands and is aggressive going after the football.

He reminds me of a Chad Johnson(Ocho).

Childs has immense upside (WR1), but I agree, only if he is fully recovered.

There is an opportunity in Minni, as they need a guy who can stretch the field, and Childs can fill that hole.

It may be a couple years before he starts to shine, but with his potential he is a guy I'd be willing to wait on.

I targetted him in our rookie draft, and got him in the late 2nd round. At that ADP I feel he presents great value.

Surprised he was still available with the last pick in my league's 3 round rookie draft (compensational pick 3.13 / 40th overall), and that was with a few picks before me being automatic based on ADP. Seems to be ranked as a 4th round or later talent (in a 12 team draft...later in 10 team or less) in some rankings.

I'm calling bull#### on this guy. He dislikes both M. Jones and G. Childs that much, and loves Joe Adams? Now, don't get me wrong, I like Joe Adams. But I'd be hesitant to take this guy seriously just from this paragraph.

I could see it if he thought Childs would never truly be back to 100% because of his patella injury. But if Childs is healthy he has a lot of talent.

BIG talent, as in WR1 talent. Childs has a nice path to a starting gig in Minny. I planned my draft so as to get him mid 2nd round. While the injury does deter, i took his pro day as a good sign. Barring inury he was 1st round talent so i feel blowing a second pick on a player of that caliber is not that big of a deal. I'm excited to see if he can come all the way back.

(KFFL) Minnesota Vikings WR Greg Childs is considered the top candidate to take WR Jerome Simpson's playing time in the first three games of the regular season while Simpson serves his suspension.
Picked this guy up at 3.11 in our rookie draft. Certainly hope he takes the job and runs with it. :)

Childs has the best potential to be a successful NFL WR out of the Arkansas Trio. Pre Injury I thought he would be a top 3 WR taken in the draft.

@TomPelissero: Uh oh. Greg Childs just went down hard trying for a catch. Screaming in pain and grabbing leg. Four trainers attending.

@TomPelissero: They're going to end the scrimmage now. Childs being carried onto Cary. Looks like left leg or knee. #Vikings

@TomPelissero: Childs motions briefly to crowd as he is taken away. I won't speculate on what it is but that didn't look good at all.

The same guy just tweeted that he is done for the year. Injured BOTH knees. Awful. :(Edit: PFT now updating:
Vikings rookie wide receiver Greg Childs was carted off the field with a leg injury during Saturday’s training camp practice. It appears the injury will be year-ending.Tom Pelissero of 1500 ESPN Twin Cities reports that Childs suffered a “significant” injury to both knees and is “almost surely” done for the season. Considered a potential future first-round pick before rupturing his patellar tendon as a junior at Arkansas, Childs’ draft stock plummeted playing with a hitch in his gait as a senior. He was available to the Vikings in April’s fourth round.Per Pelissero, the early fear is that Childs tore both patellar tendons. The Vikings were hoping Childs would emerge as their starting split end early in the season, during Jerome Simpson’s three-game suspension. They will have to look elsewhere now. Expect G.M. Rick Spielman to scour the free-agent and trade markets at receiver this week.

Is this Danario Alexander version 2.0? Tremendous potential derailed by multiple knee injuries. :(

I just won him in my main league auction less than 30 minutes before the news breaks.

I feel for this kid. As a Viking fan I had big expectations based off what I heard at camp. But more importantly, its too bad for him. He worked hard to come off the first patellar tendon injury and now most likely has a career ending injury before playing his first NFL game.

Damn...injuring your knees that easily...has to be genetic or something. I knew a girl who tore her ACL by getting out of a car...had surgery on it and when it was almost done healing, tore her other ACL while doing some easy task.

I had a blind bid going in for him in a fantasy league...was expecting to get an awesome sleeper...looks like I'm retracting it now. I can't see how this isn't career ending considering his injury history. His potential was much much greater than Danario Alexander's IMO.

I agree 100%. Too often our first thoughts are for our teams and not for the player whose hopes and dreams have likely been devastated.Send your well wishes to @TheGregChilds85. I'm sure he can use all the support he can get whether you are a fan or not.Eric LeGrand ‏@EricLeGrand52 is an amazing inspiration to us all, but especially to players who get hurt every day in this game. Follow him!

How does one tear BOTH patellar tendons at once? Jesus.
Don't know but I remember seeing this play.Wendell Davis, WR Chicago BearsDavis is the one guy on our list whose injury actually occurred during a play. While running deep on a pass route at Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium in 1993 in a contest between the Eagles and Chicago Bears, Davis blew out both knees at the same time when his cleats got caught in a seam in the Astroturf. The devastating injury forced him to miss the rest of the '93 season and all of 1994. He attempted a comeback with the Indianapolis Colts the following year, but never made it into another NFL contest.

Playing surface (Veteran's Stadium)The field's surface, originally composed of AstroTurf, contained many gaps and uneven patches. In several places, seams were clearly visible, giving it the nickname "Field of Seams". It perennially drew the ranking of the "NFL's worst field" in player surveys conducted by the NFL Players Association, and visiting players often fell prey to the treacherous conditions resulting in numerous injuries.[13] The NFLPA reportedly threatened to sue the city for the poor conditions, and many sports agents told the Eagles not to even consider signing or drafting their clients. The Eagles, for their part, complained to the city on numerous occasions about the conditions at the stadium. Baseball players also complained about the surface. It was much harder than other AstroTurf surfaces, and the shock of running on it often caused back pain.

I can tell you really feel for this kid. Almost 3 times as much as most.

I immediately thought of the same thing

So did I...

I think some people are more susceptible to injury. If a boxer can have a glass jaw, why can't a WR have comparatively weak tendons? Of course, trying to discern which individual is injury prone is where the rub is. Football is a violent sport so multiple injuries to the same body part could be just coincidence. If his prior injury was contact related, like this one, I don't know that this tells us he is injury prone or just very unlucky.BTW, I was really high on Childs. I didn't mean to imply he was no more talented than Alexander. But Alexander is clearly a case where his knee injury in college hurt his draft stock and his continued problems with them has limited his ability to capitalize on opportunity. I wish the kid the best.

that's probably true (that some guys are just more likely, due to some weak parts). It surprises me a little bit, though, because I wonder how they ever made it to the NFL. Seems like it would have surfaced in high school and they would just end up being another name we never knew...washed out with the tide before it ever got rolling. Maybe its a situaiton where the demands of training shift dramatically or just enough to make the difference. Like, was he trying to put on more weight now that he's in the NFL or was his training regiment jsut that much different than what he did up till now and that exposed the weakness?Who knows but I would have to say, as a simple observer, for a player to have this type of injury almost immediately, and this type, and for it to be a partial repeat from earlier in college, he probably has very little chance to ever contribute in the NFL. I'm sure the Vikes will IR him and try him again next year or whenever he's recovered but this, to me, has all the looks of a lingering issue that never gets right and the player is gone in about 2-3 NFL seasons.
