Grocery Store-What are you paying for food? (1 Viewer)

thinking about this when making my breakfast this morning, the ironic thing about eggs is it's one of the most inexpensive meals out there. One egg,
Sorry to interrupt but this is a pet peeve. If you're not buying pasture raised organic eggs then it doesn't matter what you're buying. "Cage free", "Free range", "All-natural" etc, all are just marketing gimmicks. Don't even look at that because it's nonsense and just buy the cheapest they have unless you're buying pasture raised organic which are much better for you and taste infinitely better. We were forced to buy a dozen cage free a few weeks back and they had no taste. Spend the extra few bucks and buy the Vital farms PR-organic eggs and thank me later. At 12.99 for 18 of them it's still a pretty good deal seeing the number of meals you get out of it. If you have no palate and just eat crap all the time please disregard.
Sure if you want to be a heartless b*****d and not care about the chickens, but I ain't supporting keeping chickens in solitary confinement, get them out of the cages.

"Cage-free" sounds great but it's mostly a marketing gimmick. It just means the hens aren't kept in wire cages but they’re still crammed into overcrowded barns with virtually no outdoor access. They live in filthy conditions with thousands of birds packed together unable to move freely. It's far from humane. They can say "Free range" if the factory farm barn has like a little 5 square foot outdoor patio attached to the building housing thousands of birds. It's all ********. If it isn't pasture raised then it's awful.

Spot on. I’m sure there’s an infographic that visualizes it

Bright orange yolk?
You know it.

Stopped to pick up a few things tonight. Eggs are almost $10 a dozen at the local grocery store.

I'll quit complaining about $6.16 for 18 eggs at our WalMarts, then. Damn.

The December fire-sale brown eggs are back at our local chain! $3.59 for a carton of18 large brown equals about $2.39/dozen. The second-best price locally for a dozen eggs is Aldi at $4.67/dozen.

I felt a little guilty when I saw them yesterday, so I only grabbed two fire-sale 18-packs. They’re apparently sourced from one or more local poultry farms that are outside of the mega-flock system that is coming down with so much flu. Those local farmers can’t produce eggs in huge numbers ... but if you get lucky when they happen to be in stock, you can get a great deal.

The former local egg-price leader, WalMart Neighborhood Market, couldn't hold their breath any more. After selling cartons of 18 large eggs for $6.16 for a few weeks – through this past Monday February 3rd – they shot up 50% all at once. Same 18 pack of eggs, at the same store, was $8.18 on Saturday, February 8th.

Went to Whole Foods that had been getting eggs intermittently, and when they were out would have a sign saying they're having trouble with supply. Yesterday they had just taken out the whole section and replaced with something else, no indication eggs are happening any time soon:frown:. Thought that was odd...

We have not been able to get eggs at Whole Foods for weeks now. Readily available at most other grocery stores.

Must be a local thing. Just bought two dozen 365 brand outdoor access for $4.99/doz at Denver WF no problem

I paid $4.99 for a dozen cage free organic brown eggs yesterday. The pasture raised were only $6.99 Willie. Gerry's brand from Harris Teeter. They also had most of what we buy at half price. Overall I haven't seen what others are seeing. Campbell cream of mushroom small can was $3.19 - of all things to be severely overpriced. Bought a huge box of mushrooms for $2 and some half and half for to make my own.

I spent $25.18 at the grocery store this morning. I bought:

- Loaf of bread - Portland Rustic White. This was $7.49 which is WAY more than it used to be, but damnit, I love this bread. They got me here, not gonna lie.
- Head of iceberg lettuce - gotta have that crisp coolness with my sandwiches.
- Pound of pepper turkey sliced breast meat - the best breast.
- 8oz smoked gouda - nothing rounds out a pepper turkey sandwich like some smoked gouda cheese.

Figure this will be my work lunches for the next 6-7 work days if I don't do anything dumb like use the good bread for peanut butter toast or toss in some pepper turkey bacon like it's Red Man Chew. Ideally, I stretch into day 7 and if you divide $25.18 by 7 using pizza math, it's something like $3.25. Maybe. Don't calculate that. I shall survive!

I'm hearing $14 a dozen at Publix here in South Florida today
I have not verified that yet with my own eyes, just got mine for $7.99 a week ago, I would be shocked if this is true

Maybe it's temporary due to a shortage or something

We had some good deals this week.

1 lb sundried tomato turkey $4.99
Romaine $0.99
Grape tomatoes $0.99
Seedless cucumber $0.99
3 pack green pepper $0.99
Rotating mustards / homemade hummus to dip

Should come out to ~$2 per

I feel obligated to post what I saw with my own eyes at Fresh Market today as I was picking up my ground white meat chicken $4.99/lb and ground chuck $3.99/lb
I go to the eggs section and there are literally NO EGGS!!!
:oldunsure:

-I have a couple dozen in the fridge that don't expire until March but still...

Went to Publix today to grab a few things, bottle of Veuve Champagne and 2 bottles of red wine plus beer really shoots up your ticket on the way out of there
Narragansett was $7.99 then $8.99 and now is almost $9.99 for a 6-pack/tall boys, that's a 25% increase in the last 2-3 years, maybe that's normal
That was the cheapest alcohol in my cart although Educated Guess red blend was BoGo and i just couldn't pass that up at $28 a bottle typically

-I went to the eggs section with no intention of actually buying them since I have plenty for the next week or two in the fridge
Only eggs were the pink and blue styrofoam dozens which are Publix brand, prices were not crazy but there was no premium selection or anything other than those Publix eggs
$6-$8 I would say

QT of OG Half n Half - $4.45
Pepsi 6-pack of cans w/ real sugar, only about 8 oz per can - $5.65, won't be buying those too often
Whipped cream $4.50...it's V-Day and I want to be prepared
Roll of Publix brand paper towels $2.05 per roll
Truly sharp cheddar $5.65 for 8 oz
Brie cheese $9.25...we're having red wine and other things to go along with that tonight
Strawberries, the normal kind were 2/$5 so I bought one of those and then my wife complains when I don't buy organic berries so i bought one organic $7.99 and I want to compare taste, seems like a waste of money to pay triple. If the reg strawberries taste bland then I'll just toss them in my morning smoothie.
Taylor salad kits, got a Caesar we had for lunch and another Mediterranean blend, on sale $3.33 a bag, this was easy
OG Bananas were $1/lb and I bought 2, this doesn't seem to be a back breaker most of the time
Simply Cheetos $5.29 a bag, why did I pick these up?
Grapes, $3/lb and I grabbed 2 pounds, no organic red ones so I settled for the regular kind.

6 large bottles of water came to about $15 and the OJ was $3

Alcohol including the Veuve, red wine and beer came to about $96 today, Valentine's Day is the reason for the fancy champagne
I bought a Valentine's Day balloon, about the biggest one they had in the store on the highest string, it's HUGE and it was $13
Mrs tied it up right away to the DJ booth where we plan on spinning records later this evening

My total grocery bill came to $195.90 so take out the alcohol and you're at $100, minus the balloon and it's closer to $85
And still I didn't buy any actual meals at the grocery store
We might need to order pizza later

Question for the class.
If eggs are super overpriced.........why are you buying them?
Prob people want eggs and while sure, you can eat something else there's not really a replacement. Also, it's really still a cheap food compared to other things. I have an egg sandwich almost every morning, so cost of a bagel, cheese, veggies and an egg is still just a few bucks.

Eggflation is a hoax. If it were real, the price of chicken would be up as well.
Hold on just a second, if our eggs aren't coming from chickens then where are they coming from?
They’re totally different types of chickens. Fryer chickens are slaughtered at like 2 months old, while layers are commercially productive for a few years. I’d guess that makes them, and specifically the egg supply chain, more likely to be affected by things like bird flu.

We had both layers and I raised fryer chickens when I was a kid.

Costco holding strong at 4.25 a dozen. I only need them every other week but its fun poking my head into the walkin to see the current rate. I've said this before, but I don't know how the folks providing that organic spring salad mix have kept their price steady all these years. Maybe some shrinkflation going on?

Tofu works great as an egg replacement for breakfast scrambles.

We as eaters do not need cows' milk nor eggs to survive. We just demand them because we're used to it.

Baking

You can replace eggs in baking with flax seeds, unsweetened applesauce and more. It's just a binder.

I baked some eggless cookies a few weeks ago using bananas. They were very tasty but I don't think that'll work for angel food.

Might give this a go and report back.

I've made two vegan cakes recently that were divine.

To be more specific - if you had to kill your whole flock of fryers due to disease, you could raise another batch and have them ready to sell in 6-8 weeks.

With layers, you wouldn’t have anything to sell for about 6 months as that’s how old they have to be for them to start producing.
