A few months back, Gronk said something to the effect of: "I haven't had August off in 20 years." I understand why he said it, because of training camp, but found it odd he mentioned August only. It was just one of many statements he's made since retiring, but I'm hanging my hat on that one as a signal he's coming back.

That’s some serious inference.

Its possible he’s just talking about how nice it is to have August off. He may well feel the same way about September, October, November & December too.

They’re all nice months to have off when you’re wealthy, feeling good & not getting into 20 car crashes a game.

Question for the group: as the months go on and Gronk is feeling better and better, do you see it as less, or more likely that he wants to dive back in, and maybe risk another concussion or surgery?

Imma bet it’s less.

More...Witten even said that it wasn’t until the season started and he saw the action where his mind changed.  Not saying he comes back in 2019, but just the fact that he’s entertaining the possibility without even seeing the game sans him in it...?

He was asked the question. He didn’t volunteer it. He wasn’t waxing poetically about returning. He was specifically asked & he basically said no.

He said it politely & leaving a small window open, but I read a lot more “no, I feel good” than “yes, absolutely, can’t wait to get back out there!”

Fair enough.  We’re all speculating, but I took it differently; that it was the pain he dealt with that really sapped his desire. But he’s still relatively young.

Right. The pain he had...as a result of playing.

I mean, there is a correlation there & he made it.

He played & was in constant pain. He stopped playing & finally feels better (+CBD)

He sounds like he’s become an advocate for CBD & working with the league to allow it.

Hey, make a waiver claim - ya never know. I’d bet against it though.

competitive nature is hard to put aside. Especially when your one of the best.

If Belichick gives him a call mid-season, I could see Gronk getting on board for another playoff run.

That said, I give it about a 10% chance of actually happening.

I'm still holding him on my roster in one of my dynasty leagues but will likely have to drop him a few weeks in as bye weeks make lineups difficult.

Belichick's ego would probably prevent him from doing that.  However, Tom Brady would in a heartbeat.

Based on how things played out, I am pretty confident that the team and Gronk have had a discussion on scenarios in which might Gronk came back. I saw an interview with Gronk after the season was over where Gronk essentially said he would come back for another year if the money was right. After that, 4-6 weeks of negotiations ensued and he opted to retire. I would think Gronk, his agent, and BB had a final conversation where BB said something to the effect of "if you change your mind, we can offer you a prorated amount based off of X" (where X would have been a yearly salary). The upside to NE is, unlike trades or injured players, Gronk could come back at any time so they don't have to worry about the trade deadline or reactivating players from the PUP or IR. While Gronk technically would be under contract, both sides could choose to amend the deal if they so chose. Of course, NE would have to have the salary cap room to add him back to the active roster. Currently, the Patriots are $15.5 million under the cap, but a lot will change in the next few days with roster cuts, trades, new signings, etc.

Or to get it out of his system, which is only like ~ 2 weeks, depending on how much he was taking, and how much water dude drinks. ;)

that said, he’s not coming back.
If he believes CBD is essential to controlling his pain then it's got nothing to do with peeing dirty or not.

I've drafted him with my last pick in all but 1 league.  If he hasn't announced that he is returning before 12:55pm on Sunday, I will drop him.  I'm sure there will be a player who I will hear about in the next few days that I will want to pick up Sunday morning.  I am literally losing nothing by using my 18th round pick on him until the season begins.

I grabbed him in a dynasty league where I might need a TE or flex player down the road this year for a modest $9 bid.

I still don’t think it’s going to happen, but I like seeing his name when I look at my roster & I didn’t cut anyone of value for him.

Unless of course he want to play in the NFL, where it’s a banned substance.

In which case it has a lot to do with peeing dirty.
Sure, but my point was if it's causing him to be pain free for the first time in his life, it's not just about stopping so he can be clean but is he willing to stop and be in pain again?

Oh, most definitely. That’s the point I made earlier on the topic towards why I thought he wouldn’t come back.

We agree on that for sure.  Sorry, I had misunderstood your post.
