Every Marvel movie I have ever seen has been fine for MY 5 and 8 year olds. I cant speak for everyone. They dont get scared at villains.

We have also watched some Star Wars stuff

I will not show either of them Lord of the Rings yet. I do think they would get freaked out by certain things

So every kid and every parent is different. I have a buddy who will not show his 5 year old any Star Wars movies because his wife is concerned about violence. I feel bad for that kid
hobits are freaky.

My 5 year old gets freaked out scared about the cat statues that come to life in Treasure Buddies (a movie about the 5 descendents of Air Bud, they're super cute yellow lab puppies that make silly quips as they quest for treasure through a foreign land filled will heavy handed stereotypes [like the evil camel auctioneer][i'm not kidding, that's the plot]). She couldn't sleep for nights.

Every kid is different is true. I tend to think they can see some more mature stuff, but they haven't. I really want to test the waters with ET and Goonies, but my wife keeps saying they're not old enough. She may be right.

I just want this My Little Pony phase to end.

ETA: Guardians would have them up nights for a week straight. Avengers? They'd have worse nightmares than Stark did in Ironman 3. I think they're still a few years out from that.

If you haven't seen Goonies for a while you'll be surprised by the number of curse words in it.

I think about 90% of the old Star Wars would be fine for kids, but there are a few severed limbs and the Greedo execution, couple of things like that that might be a bit much.

I am completely unconcerned with "curse" words. Words are wind. As long as my kids know how to speak respectfully in public, they can potty talk to their heart's content @ home.

E.T. scared the crap out of me as a kid. I was convinced he was hiding in my closet.

I watched it with my daughter when she was about 5, but had to remind her a lot that he's good guy.

Why would you feel bad? They have the rest of their life to see movies and it will be more meaningful when they do.

I was surprised by the words in Beetlejuice. I forgot all about him dropping the f bomb so much. Started to watch it one night thinking "what a great movie! the kids would love it!" and then they start dropping everywhere and my wife gives me the look of "great idea einstein".

With that said, my kids loved The Goonies! I even had my youngest doing the truffle shuffle.
