Gun Control Laws - Where are we really? Where to go? (1 Viewer)

If it were up to me, I would heavily regulate any gun that can accept a magazine.

30 rounds sounds normal to you guys...waay to high IMO.

CA banned anything over 10 round mag's - did it stop murders/killing ?

While homicides have increased during the pandemic, mass shootings have remained stable since 2013, with some seasonal and annual fluctuations. California has experienced a mass shooting every seven to ten days each year. So far in 2022, the state has averaged one mass shooting every week.

California already has some of the toughest gun laws  in the country,

Good thing we have more reasonable and logical people than you on our side.

All the focus on enacting new laws that doesn’t impact any of the recent mass murders is misguided imo..  the vast majority of gun murders happen in urban cities but let’s make pretend we are making America safe.  Just a joke..

Not to speak for him, but pretty sure he meant by replacing them with more liberal members over time.
That I can get behind. A process exists to change the face of the court. It was structured by our Founding Fathers to be slow moving change  by design.

Hard to tell that standard change was the plan, as several liberal groups have openly mused about trying to change the structure of the courts because they're not in their favor.

That sets a very dangerous precedent...  as we all know the Republicans would return the favor at first opportunity..  destabilizing the judicial branch of our government.

1. Common sense is not very common.  When I hear "common sense", it means someone is trying to impose what they think is right for everyone else without thinking it thru.  "It's just common sense" = I can't explain why I think I'm right.

2. Uvalde was "hardened".

3. you don't care because you don't like the solutions.

1.  everyone does have a different definition

2. from your link "It’s unclear how Uvalde CISD spent the $69,000 it received from the state to enhance its physical security. School officials did not respond to questions Wednesday. As of the May 2 report, the district had spent about $48,000 of the grant, which is set to end at the end of the month."

3. I absolutely care about stopping murderers. Anti-gun side just wants them killing people with something other than an AR15

At some point I hope the GOP will come to the table with some concessions. Raising the age for semi-auto weapons, increased mental health care access, improved or expanded background checks, license requirements for various weapons classifications.

We need good-faith conversations and negotiations across the aisle.

how many here chewed my tail for suggesting negotiations and concessions ? I was told nothing would be given, anti-gun is going to take take take and they don't need me to agree with anything

and so ... me, my pro-gun people, the NRA, GOA and many others are going to show the same courtesy

I full well know anti-gun is coming for all guns - that's been made crystal clear in these 90+ pages

Basically all guns except single shot guns, double barrel shotguns and single shot rifles have a magazine or clip. Even the old Winchester 45s
"I'm a Hunter and nobody should have more than what I have" is not a winning argument.

Seems a bit self-serving actually.

Put a 50 round magazine clip in my lever action and it would inflict much more carnage and casualties than my semi automatic with a 4 shot clip

anti-gun people don't have much knowledge on guns/weapons

they believe what they're told, believe that passing an x law or y restriction will stop murderers

they actually believe it .... which is what I've been saying all along and will say it until i'm dead

focus on stopping murderers please - not the weapons they choose to use

Are you suggesting that the ideas people have about gun restriction will have 0 impact on the gun violence in urban cities?  Are you ignoring all the conversations about those types of shootings?

preventing shootings before they occur - catching these people before the act

those are the dots - connect them - maybe I wasn't clear enough ??

why did NRA fight them ? what was the reason the NRA was against them ?
because they "restrict" rights.....same as they always trot out....YOUR dues and donations at work...well done

why would banning a certain kind of weapon stop a murderer ?

you can't seriously believe it will

Again, 30 rounds is standard capacity for AR platform so calling it "high-capacity" calls into question your experience with the Platform.

Also, 4 rounds is sufficient for old dudes who camp at a bench all day shooting at long range, however that is one small subset of uses for the platform.  One simple example is standard 3 Gun competitive shooting matched, (the fastest growing sport shooting competitions) where 4 round magazines are wholly insufficient.
Sorry but compromises have to be made and this "platform" may be loads of fun but I can't support it. I don't care if 30 shot clips are  standard on the AR-15 and those who shoot them don't consider them high capacity. I am against them and fall in with the 73% that also do. Anyway legislation banning them are not going to happen anytime soon regardless.

how did they explain the restriction ? do you have a link? i would like to know more (seriously)
Go look it up.....I was all over the gun threads three years ago with it and I got some of the best cricket impressions ever seen on this board.  Go read for yourself what the organization you are propping up gave as it's excuse to fight the law YOU said was a good one and proactively stopped more death.  Your dues...your donations.

With every hour that passes it is less and less likely that there will be any kind of action on gun reform. All of the restrictions that every poll suggests the vast majority of the public is in favor of: universal background checks, red flag laws, raising the age limit of buying certain or all guns to 21- none of that is going to happen.

Republicans have expertly honed their response to these sorts of horrific incidents over the years: offer lip service to compromise, talk about mental health and increasing security, delay delay delay and then vote against everything. It works every time. It will continue to work until some of these people lose an election.

Basically.  I just saw something that talked about how after a shooting (especially one as bad as this) there is a huge spike in support of reform that ends up falling after 2-3 weeks.

I'm well aware that banning sale doesn't make them magically go away.  That's why I want a licensing requirement for possession, and STRICT consequences for law breakers.

Interesting you say this as this article just came out today….

https://www.yahoo.com/news/california-americas-toughest-gun-laws-181226078.html

From the article…

California’s rate of firearm mortality is among the nation’s lowest, with 8.5 gun deaths per 100,000 people in 2020, compared with 13.7 per 100,000 nationally and 14.2 per 100,000 in Texas, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported. And Californians are about 25% less likely to die in mass shootings, compared with residents of other states, according to a recent Public Policy Institute of California analysis.”

Unfortunately this is correct. Already happening in here. At least two guys already admitted to donating more money to these gun orgs. Literally less than a week after these murders. Playbook is down pat. Like the guy said, after Sandy Hook, that’s when we decided. We decided we will tolerate these murders. It’s sick.

One side says it's a mental health issue another says it's guns. Kimmel said it best this last week, "it can be both"

If it is a mental health issue than we need background checks and red flag laws to keep guns out of the mentally unstable and red flag laws to take them away from the mentally unstable.

Agree it is a mental health and unregulated social media issue.

Took 30 mins this morning to drop an email to my senators to oppose Booker's Gun Control Bill as it stands. About a dozen buddies in one group did the same. Already heard back from one.

Also bumped up monthly contribution to FPC.

Wish this stuff wasn't necessary but it is at times like these.
Probably not that hard with our two Senators. Not saying anything about this bill…but they will oppose anything and everything from the left always.
And Blackburn on anything the NRA doesn’t like it seems…

But credit to anyone reaching out to their elected officials.

Huh. Not only are the gun death numbers significantly lower, but I can speak to the giant swaths of red areas in that state where gun ownership proliferates. I've never heard more gunshots in any city over the course of years as I did living in frontier (that's more-rural-than-rural for all you city slickers) NorCal. It would seem as if Cali is doing a lot of things right, despite many conservatives believing that it's a liberal hell hole ruled and ruined by Hollywood elites.

No one should be allowed to purchase this type of gun, unless they pass a federal investigation check.  They should have to obtain a federal license to have an assault rifle.
In the vast majority of cases (should be all) they already have to pass a federal background check to purchase the rifle.

You may be right but I have a feeling that if Republicans don't go along with some kind of legislation it will hurt them in November...likely even more than what overturning Roe may do. And if it is viewed as too little that to could be detrimental for them.

I think we pass UBC and bump the age to 21.

I also think nothing meaningful gets done on the securing schools / mental health and intervention angles... because the bulk of the left talks a good game but their true priorities lie in expanding gun control, not in stopping school shootings.... which is a shame.

With fuel expected to push $6/gallon this summer, and stagflation possibly setting in, I think the Left is losing the House regardless of gun control.

That would be amazing as it would be progress and mean Congress decided to actually work for the people and accomplish something other then getting themselves re-elected.  Because of this I will believe it when I see it.

A lot of people on both sides are showing their true priorities.  And none of it matters.

I don't disagree with you on the House going GOP but I think the Senare gets tighter as well as Governor races.

I have an idea.Let the anti-gun crowd go gather up all the ILLEGAL guns out on the streets in cities like Chicago and NY and Baltimore , see how THAT goes ...if you can clean up every gun from the criminals first ,then you can go from there. Good luck.

So the pro-gun crowd doesn’t want to help clean up all the illegal guns from criminals?

In Missouri:

1. Gunman A is open carrying his rifle at the store.

2. He is accosted outside by gunman B who robs gunman A of the rifle.

3. Gunman A retrieves another gun from his car and fires at gunman B, who is struck.

4. Gunman A flees.

5. Unknown gunman C arrives, shoots gunman B.

6. Gunman C flees.

Its the gosh darn Wild West…

Do you believe that the US has the most gun deaths per capita because they have the most guns per capita, and the easiest access to get guns?  Or do you think there's another reason the US has the most gun deaths out of all Western countries?

I think it is mostly because we have the most psychos and most criminals. But the access to guns certainly doesn't help.

This is offensive and wrong.  It's not the left blocking increased expenditures on mental health (or securing schools, for that matter).

People don’t value life like in civilized countries like Canada.  I’m sure there are illegal guns in Canada, but people don’t look to shoot to solve a problem.

There is 20 years of school shootings that suggest not much is getting done.  Why is the Texas shooting going to get things rolling, what is more special about them vs Oxford Mi or any other affected school?

Not much is getting done.  Mostly because the GOP blocks gun reform, blocks increased expenditures on school safety, and blocks increased expenditures on mental health care.

It will have minimal to no impact.  Universal background checks, mental health checks?    Aren’t the vast majority of guns used in urban crime illegal guns?
