Harlem Globetrotters—Still worth seeing? (1 Viewer)

They are coming around and can get pretty good seats. Remember seeing them as a kid when they were at their prime. Just have not heard much of them in a few years.

would really be for the kids, 7 boy and 11 girl.....11 y/o enjoys playing basketball at school, but we are not a basketball family by any stretch.

Worth a night out or is the act old a worn out?

Saw them a few years ago and going again next spring.  I thought it was entertaining and kids still do too.

definitely a fun time for the kids. they put on a fun show.

they're a slice of Americana. everyone should see them once.

I figured this would make a nice family outing stocking stuffer. I loved the Globetrotters when I was a kid (only ever saw them on Wild World of Sports) so mine would at least enjoy the show and I'd finally be able to see them in person. Certainly better and cheaper than the canned Disney on Ice or what not. I looked at the Philly show and took four $21 tickets. Figuring I'll pay another $15 to park and be out the door for $100. Not cheap, but doable. Added them to my cart and the friggin "Fees" add up to another $18 a ticket!!

EFF them !!! I'll buy the DVD, play it on the big screen and pretend

Seems they are coming back around (actually it looks like they never stop...crazy cross-country schedule they keep).

I didn't pull the trigger last time but now my 11yr old daughter is really into basketball so I jumped on the presale today. Added in the pre-show fan experience where the kids can meet the players get autographs and do some simple tricks. Solid tickets, 1st row, just off the floor, just left of center court.

Its a few days after Christmas so it'll give us something to do when the kids are off.

Looking forward to it!!

I was looking on Seat Geek for tix local to me (screw ticketmaster). They must have at least a couple of "teams" because there's a show in Saskatoon, Canada (sounds like a cool place) and São Paulo, Brazil on the same day.

Definitely keeping eye out for this winter.

They have had two touring squads for a while.

Saw them last night. Overall, the kids enjoyed it a bunch but the act is getting kinda stale. They must have done the "passing the ball around in a circle" move about 6 times. But otherwise it was a lot of the classic "bounce the ball off the rim to each guy and the last one dunks," far away shots, "no look behind the back Alley-oops" then they did some gags where they replaced the ball with a similar looking ballon for a General foul shot, a fun "lets see that in slow motion, but first rewind" play. But outside of that, they stopped the game often to pull some kid or old dude on the court to dance or have fun with.

They really pumped up the Generals as a new and improved team but you could tell that none of them gave a ####. They added a big 7 footer bad guy which was basically the whole offense. I mean they had a 5-8 irish white kid in the lineup. lol

If you dropped some money and sat court side, you got a fantastic show. The players were really interacting with those viewers and they got called into the act a few times. Otherwise, it pays to be a little higher up b/c a lot of their act is dribbling or passing and you loose that if you are too close. We sat 1st row, but behind the court side seats and I wish I was a little higher up b/c we were basically on the floor, w/o the benefits of being "ON" the floor. We lost a lot of the near court stuff b/c we were looking through 2 rows of bodies.

We also did the Magic Pass pre show which let you meet a few players and spin the ball on your finger, etc. It was fun but IMO they oversold it so it was very crowded and you couldnt meet everyone. Players did autographs after the game which was cool but a bit chaotic. They ripped off the court and you went to each player, but no real lines or order, it was more of a free for all.

The Globetotters added some girls to their line up, which was great for my daughter who is the real basketball fan in the family. But they really didn't have much of a roll in the game  as a whole.

My kids def want to see them again next time they are in town. And tix are not all that expensive. I would say our 14000 seat arena was at most 1/3rd filled for a 6pm weeknight game.

oh...and the Generals lost. I really shouldn't have bet on them.

So don't keep us in suspense.

How was the DVD?

Saw them tonight.  Ant Atkinson is a really good showman.

Cajun was a decent villain, but nowhere near that of the 7' 7" Paull Sturgess a couple years ago.

Yes.  The Warriors are so comically scripted bad I'm guessing the Globetrotters had to create a villain story to keep people interested.

When I saw them a few years ago, that Paul guy that is like the tallest guy in the world.  The announcers kept talking him up as some weird beast from a foreign land, and called him the Warriors' secret weapon.  He didn't even come out until halftime.  But he got a lot of microphone time.  Talking #### about the globetrotters and the city, ripping up a globetrotters shirt, etc.

This year, same premise, but villain was "Cajun".  He wore one of those masks ball players do with they get a broken nose, but it was all black.  He basically played the same role.

Wow.    I didn't realize it was this serious.   Normally when I say that, I say it dismissively, but no ill-intent here at all -- I honestly am just surprised there's a "story" involved too.   My knowledge of the Globetrotters doesn't go anywhere north of the early 1980s and even prior to that it's pretty thin.  I kinda figured Meadowlark just freestyled some karate-infused skyhooks or something.

I remember my dad taking me to see the Globetrotters in the early 70's - Meadowlark hit 2 consecutive hook shots from the half court sideline.

Took my 9 year old last week, he loved it    I mean, yeah as an adult some of the act is a bit stale, but they're still working hard out there and it was definitely worth the $ to take him.

And yeah, it's "Cager" not "Cajun"
