I wasn't really much of an NBA fan growing up in Michigan, but was a Wolverines fan. In 1977, a kid my age moved in next door from Boston, and introduced me to the Celtics and Red Sox. I remained a Celtics fan a very long time, despite moving to Sacramento in 1981 and the Kings moving nearby from KC.

I absolutely loved the Fab-Five on the Wolverines and especially liked Chris Webber's game. I followed Webber when he entered the NBA, but was always Celtics loyal. The first ever NBA game I attended was the Celtics visiting the Kings, and I was decked in green rooting for my Celtics.

I became a Kings fan when:

- Webber got traded to the Kings,

- I met a local girl that I really liked and she was a Kings fan (now my wife),

- Going to Kings games was one of the things my girlfriend liked doing for dates.

I've been a Kings fan since and never regretted it, even when the Celtics won another championship. It also worked well with my hatred for the Lakers. :)

yes for pro basketball because pittsburgh doesn't have a team.

switched from the Bulls to the Spurs. Jordan to Duncan. When Duncan hangs them up, it will be a new team.

I grew up a Houston Oilers fan. I was a giant Warren Moon fan. I loved that team. I was crushed when Bud ####### Adams traded him away. Once it was announced that they were moving, I had enough. I developed such a hatred for ownership that I could no longer even watch them. I moved to Jacksonville shortly thereafter and adopted the Jaguars. It was really odd at first, as I was just a casual fan rooting against some of the players I had once pulled for. It didn't take me long to really get into the team. It was really hard in 1999 watching the Titans own the Jags.

So I switched teams, but that team no longer exists.

I think I had a good reason, as I kid I was a Yankees fan and my favorite player was Dave Winfield. Then Steinbrenner went insane on him, hired people to dig up dirt on him, and traded him away. The Yanks were dead to me for a long time after that.
Until about October 1996, right?

This is me with basketball.

My favorite player as a teenager was Patrick Ewing. I rooted for him and the Knicks all through Jordan's Bulls defeating mt Knicks in excruciatingly close eastern conference finals games. Charles Smith was fouled and dammit, why didn't you just DUNK IT instead of a layup Patrick!?!?!?!?!!!!

Now I root for Kobe and Bradley Beal, Bullets over Lakers when they play.

Barely. I grew up rooting for the local university, with season tickets.

Then I went to college at a better university in another part of the country. I switched allegiances. It was tested once, when the old team visited the new team in basketball. I rooted for the new team.

Being a Redskins fan growing up in Boston was tough, but I never switched. It wasn't until I was about 21 or so until the Pats started to get good and the bandwagon began to warm up, so the temptation to switch was never really there. In grade school, most of my friends who are now Pats fans were big fans of other Boston sports teams, but casual Pats fans and had "other" favorite teams. I am a fan of all other Boston sports, but grew up a skins fan mostlly because I watched a lot of sports with my grandfather who was a Redskins fan. His first ever sporting event was when his father took him to Fenway Park to watch the Boston Redskins. It is awful watching the Pats be so successful while my Redskins are often a punchline, but I don't think I could ever switch at this point, no matter how much logical sense it would make.

I was a Phillies fan growing up. In my late teens, my sister got a job with the Orioles that gave her complimetary season tickets. I ended up going to a lot of games, and she was able to get me a part-time job with the O's through college.

It eventually turned me into an Orioles fan.

My dad was involved with several pro sports leagues and we moved around quite a bit growing up (Denver, Minneapolis,New York, Dallas, back to Minne, now in Austin.) When we lived in Dallas, I was intrigued with the branding of "America's Team", living in North Dallas and reading North Dallas Forty later on. Regardless of all the characters associated with The Cowboys, the brand is still bigger than any one person, yes including Jerry. Dang it is expensive to park at the stadium, though.

For college, when I was in 7th grade, I saw a picture of an Auburn football game in the paper and loved their uniforms. Nothing fancy but I just liked them. I was a running back in the wishbone offense in middle school, high school and college. Was always kind of in awe of Darrel Royal and the Texas program from "Meat on the Hoof".

Grew up in NJ and rooted for the Yankees/Giants/Devils/Nets/Rutgers. I've been in the DC area for about 15 years now, and all that I've kept are Giants and Rutgers football. I now root for the Nats/Caps/Wizards/GW MBB (GW is alma mater).

I think a lot of my switches were accelerated when my dad passed away. My greatest lasting connection with the teams in the NY/NJ area was talking about the latest developments of the teams with him. Once I lost that connection, rooting for the local teams became a lot easier.
