"Having said that" (1 Viewer)

Random writing thought - one can eliminate about half the instances they write "that" and the writing will be stronger.

Which brings me to my next pet peeve, misuse of "literally". This should really have a thread of it's own, but I can only work towards one cause at a time.
Although today we have a different understanding of literally, it used to mean the opposite.

In Little Women "the land literally flowed with milk and honey"

Twain wrote that Sawyer was "literally rolling in wealth"

And Fitzgerald said Gatsby "literally glowed"

Having said that, when people are using it wrong I don't think it is because they know the meaning has changed over time.

Since we're on the subject of pet peeves, how about posters who go into a thread to complain about it. Especially in the Free for all forum. Just move on instead, or go call the cops on some loiterers at the gas station or something.

And I didn't see a pet peeve forum.
Is a subforum of the Test Forum

And what the SP is not: a literary gathering. We should still take a little more pride in our writing.
I don't think people come here and worry about their writing, grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.  We get enough of that in our daily lives at work, etc. We don't really need to take pride in all those things on an anonymous message board, and shouldn't have to worry about the grammar police with every post.  IMO

Gents, let’s not miss the mark here by making the perfect the enemy of the good.  Looking forward to the revised deck first thing in the morning.  We’re on a short fuse here.

He used "literally" correctly. He responded because he DOES care.

Most people who say "I could care less" don't actually mean what they're are saying, and actually mean the literal opposite of what they're saying.

Peoples also come here to read other posts for some insight. So as a matter of politeness posters should make their replies with the reader in mind. Grammar is not my concern. I think the brohans guy is hilarious, it's excellent writing imo. Bothering me is the endless supply of content-free cliches we have to suffer through. I can't even read some of the dissertations on this board they're so bad.

But I wouldn't call somebody out in the thread so I started another one, pretty rude. It's possible I'm the only one upset by it by this.

Recent research has shown the empirical evidence for globalization of corporate innovation is very limited. And as a corollary, the market for technologies is shrinking.
As a world leader, it is important for America to provide systematic research grants for our scientists. I believe there will always be a need for us to have a well-articulated innovation policy with emphasis on human resource development. Thank you.
