Hawaii....help me (1 Viewer)

BIL got through for a second. Thinks his house is gone. He’s at the firefighters house. The firefighters parents and brother both lost their houses. Jesus.

correction: they were evacuated from the firefighters house as well. They are in a parking lot up the hill with 4 or 5 dogs, 2 teenagers. a 6 and a 4 year old. And 6 adults including one grandma. Man o man.

OMG this is terrible. Love Lahaina so much. T&P's to everyone there especially Abner, Johanna and family from Hang Loose Surf Club. Amazing family really hope they are ok.

Just saw a video of smoke whipping across a road due to massive winds. Not a good recipe when it comes to wildfires.

This is my favorite place - my happy place. I feel like I’ve been punched in the gut. Already have reservations for February. But what I feel is nothing compared to what those folks are going through. They don’t know if their family and friends are still alive. They may no longer have an employer or business. They are going to need food, clothing, medical supplies, etc. for some time to come. They just went from Paradise to Hell overnight. I’ll be donating what I can.

Scary, it has been 23 years but some of that looks familiar. Looks a lot like the Marshall Fire area I have been driving through for the last year.

Pictures of that Banyan tree are surfacing and it appears to not be a complete loss. Apparently they are incredibly resilient and can survive fires. Sounds like one piece of good news the town can be rebuilt around.
I really hope you're right. I know it's not much since many lost everything but any positive news out of Lahaina will help.

Awful. Fires not as big as in Maui, but it looks like the Mauna Kea Resort on the Big Island that I was at last month is also getting hit by the fires. 😢

This was the first thing that came to my mind when thinking of this area.

Wow now 53 dead. And expected to rise more.
I imagine a lot of folks, especially older folks, were either scared to leave their homes because they didn’t know where to go, or just didn’t think things would be as bad as they were. And with the fire moving that fast, by the time they realized it, it was too late. Just awful.

The Maui subreddits are crazy. It’s a mix of threads like “Please help me find my missing grandpa” and “We’re supposed to leave for Lahaina tomorrow, should we cancel?”

One of my best friend’s daughter barely made it out alive. House destroyed. Places of work in ashes. Ran into the flames to get her dog and passport. Other than that she has the clothes on her back. Story was on ABC news here in LA. Will be on again at 11. Go fund me is approaching $10K. Very cool to see friends and community help her get back on her feet. I have other friends whose loved ones didn’t make it out. Tragic.

Ok I'm late to this party.
How exactly did these fires start and spread so crazy hard and fast? Some of the pics I see look like areas that don't even have trees? WTF happened!!!!

hurricane passed by with high winds- that's how it spread.

still no word about cause... but there were reports of lots of downed power lines from the winds, so that seems likely to me.

Metal roofs peeled off from the hurricane hit power lines in one video online.

Expert on radio this morning was talking about non native grasses that had been brought in by developers. It is invasive and grows very tall. They had a cool and wet spring and the grass grew extremely well. Now it is the dry season and this type of grass dries out quickly. He said there was no lightning strikes so he does not know what ignighted the fire.

Fami
That must be some crazy luck to get the almost full force hurricane winds but not get any of the precipitation.

My family and I were in Maui and flew out on Wednesday, which was our scheduled departure day. We were very fortunate that we only had to deal with travel delays/inconveniences and got home safely.

I know there were some reports of 60-80 mph gusts on Tuesday that spurred the flames. We didn't experience any of that in Kihei (southeast of Lahaina). Tuesday was actually much calmer (15-20 mph) than Monday which was pretty intense winds (but obviously winds can hit different parts of the island differently).

This whole thing is so sad and my heart goes out to everyone that was impacted, lost loved ones, and lost their homes. Lots of things all had to line up for this to happen.

Joe, I got a notice the other day that my plan will be renewed on the 16th, and that is the day I will be billed. I didn't even know renewals happened automatically. Is that new? Anyway, I tried to move it up to the 13th, but I couldn't figure out how. If you can do it, can you bill me on the 13th or 14th so it will go towards the Maui Food Bank? Thanks.
