HBO - Song of Ice&Fire Series -Varsity Thread - no TV only whiners (2 Viewers)

Did you not get that she was the annoying wife sitting there asking if you want to work on the yard this Saturday while he was trying to meet a work deadline?  I don't even think Sam really heard her by that point.  It's going to take Gilly remembering it imo.
This is true, but they did give us an indication that Sam's brain was paying enough attention that he used the correct number of steps in the citadel in his little tirade.  So, maybe his recall will kick in the next time he hears the words Rhaegar or annulment.

I swear if they go from the Wall/Eastmarch all the way down to somewhere like Kings landing in the span of one off season, after season upon season of marching to nowhere, I'll make a REALLY angry, nerdy post about timespans.
But it's all downhill after you get past the wall.  Much quicker marching pace.

So.....wouldn't Jon have sent a Raven or two to Sansa? Wouldn't the lords of the North KNOW things were going reasonably well with the MoD, that Jon was heading to Eastwatch?

I don't think they do the raven thing anymore.

I would have thought somebody at the wall would have sent a raven that Bran was alive and heading home soon too, or was Sam the last who could read up there?

Maybe the dragons ate all the ravens too.

Jon received a Raven from the MoD while at Winterfell, as well as from his Measter-in-training. There were definately Ravens at the wall.

It's certainly feasible that the ravens trained to go to obscure locations (the wall) would be extremely limited, and that MoDs supply would be scarce, but a one-liner in the show could explain this.

It's pretty glaring how much this show was reliant on GRRM.  Holy #### has the writing gotten terrible this year.  Yeah, we thought AFFC and ADWD was below the quality of the first three books, but at least they had coherent plot lines and timelines that made sense.  Don't get me wrong, I still love the show, but the writing has been awful.  A Raven to dragonstone and Dany back in time to save 5 guys surrounded by a dead army?!  Please.  I hope GRRM finishes this series just so this isn't the way this epic fantasy turned out.  It's becoming really really bad fantasy at this point.

I agree.  You know, maybe DnD are trying to goad him into coming out of retirement.

Yea, say that in the other thread and they run a Night King lance through you.

It's just so obvious GRRM isn't involved, hard not to nitpick some of the stupidity. Just hate that this is how it's going to finish. Like watching the cliff notes of War and Peace after you've diligently read the first 1,000 pages and Tolstoy hands a bar napkin with some rough ideas on it to his scribe to finish writing.

I think D&D are going to announce they aren't filming the last season under the books are done, then will watch with glee as a large corner of the internet incinerates itself.

Has anyone here read Rothfuss's and/or Miles Cameron's stuff?
Haven't read Cameron... his series is on my to read list though.

Rothfuss is incredible.  He's a poet disguised as a fantasy writer.  Absolutely one of my favorite authors.  Although he suffers from the same type of Martinian glacial pace of writing.

I just read the 1st two of the kingkiller chronicle. Very good storytelling, though I found the 1st book to be somewhat better than the second. I give these guys credit for building such interesting characters and worlds, it doesn't surprise me that they run into difficulties formalizing things once the stories get going. Keeping things consistent yet interesting, varied and well written must be very tricky (and tedious).

So everyone is going to die basically. Except dany and jon's son will be azor ahai, and in 20 years will end the long night.

Has tyrion sold out dany and jon?

I think Bran should have called him Storm instead of Sand, but I don't know if that bastname has been introduced to the audience (I don't remember about Gendry - speaking of which, he was a no-show last episode.)

believe you take the name from your father's lands.

I thought about that last night too.  Shouldn't his name always have been Sand.  Ned never told people he was born in the north, he brought him back after the war.
If Jon is Neds *******, he's a Snow, same with other families/houses except the Targs. I looked it up some time ago. Its confusing, but the Targs don't really have a ******* name so use birthplace. (I think)

Tyrion has me worried. He made lots of "mistakes" this season. He seemed very conflicted when the dragons burned his family army. He encouraged the north of the wall excursion (but seemingly wanted to keep dany from going-- or did he?). And then he cut some deal w Cersei who lied to jon/dany and he did not look happy when spying on Jon going in to bang dany ....

Gotcha.  So all of Robert's bastards would have the same last name no matter where they were born.

I'm hoping that this season was to get all the chess pieces in place and that GRRM is more descriptive with how the rest of the show must finish up and thus less chance for D and D to go crazy with the story.

I think it depends if he acknowledges them.    Edrick Storm is an acknowledged ******* but Mya Stone is not.
I guess that is probably where my confusion was - I thought she was Stone just because she was born in the Vale.  Never really thought about the Sand/Snow name with Jon for whatever reason.

In watching the Rhaegar/Lyanna wedding scene, I didn't see a wierwood. Is that correct?

I ask because it makes me less clear on Bran's abilities if there wasn't a wierwood present.

If he can drop in anywhere, anytime in the past or present at will, shouldn't he be able to go back and have the whole book on the white walkers by now, including exactly what works to defeat them?

He'll probably get to that a little quicker now. They might be able to block his powers though. They sent all those ravens away with a glance. Maybe we'll get a legit origin story on the main guy through Bran.

Not entirely clear that is a legit Aegon in the books.  But, Rhaegar does seem to have two sons named Aegon.
It makes the whole thing with Martells even more tragic. They weren't even legitimate heirs and she wasn't his wife when the Lannisters massacred them. I wonder if Elia knew about the annulment and/or all Rheagar's visions/plans.

They really shortchanged the Littlefinger character on the show, starting with him marrying Sansa to Ramsay. I hope he gets a more interesting remaining treatment in the books.

Asking for any kind of additional writing other than the final two books is just wishful thinking at its worst......but I really hope that (when/if he's done the final two) Martin has enough left in the tank to give us a novella in the form of a Littelfinger diary or POV or something.

They were married in Dorne though right? Are there any of them that far south? I thought in the books they said the only remaining ones were well north. That the farther south you go, the rarer they were. And they were married by a Maester? Seems sort of like getting hitched at the court house to me, no? Maybe religion wasn't part of it. They just wanted to make it legal before they got down to business.

Right. My point being - there was no weirwood there, yet Bran could see what happened there. My initial understanding of his capabilities was that there needed to be a wierwood present for the 3 eyed raven to see stuff near the tree, and anything that didn't happen in proximity to a tree wasn't available for viewing. But this would be (another?) example that that's not the case - Bran can see anything anywhere that's happened in the past or is happening in the present. It would make him ridiculously powerful (like he said, he knows everything), in a narrative destabilizing kind of way - basically the same problem I had with the whole Hodor deal.

Probably just show taking liberties.
