HBO - Song of Ice&Fire Series -Varsity Thread - no TV only whiners (1 Viewer)

what the #### just happened?!!
Trying to piece it together myself. So last week Tywin seemed to decide that he was going to try to surprise Robb...but he was actually going the other way?

I think it was a cheap way to end the fight a la Lord of the Rings and they probably didnt want to tackle the ending the way the book did. Its a lot more in depth and intense that way.

Great episode for sure but I am a little bummed at how far off track they have gotten from the books.
you are gonna have to get over it
yeah i understand, the books are incredibly complex and thats not easy to put on screen.
:shrug:In the ways that matter to the book's plot, they're not off-track at all. Just doesn't happen to follow the book note-for-note.
I think that is to be determined. A lot of things are different and could be crucial later on. Ayra plot, The Imp and his injury, The chain etc...

The chain isn't all that relevant to the long-term plot. It's just a way to show Tyrion's cleverness, and they did that with the wildfire. He's still injured, though it isn't as gruesome as in the books. Arya's plot has been accelerated, but I'm assuming her arc will end similarly next week. The same could be said for Jon and Dany. The paths are a little different in the series, but they reach the same checkpoints, generally speaking.

All good points. I thought in the books people keep coming back to the chain and the brutalness of it and people start giving the Imp mad props for that. Maybe the same is true with the boat so we shall see. Awesome series though, best on TV now.

finally caught up to real time here. So if Stannis is dead and Renly is dead, who is next in line officially?

Epic episode. Will probably read the books in time to keep up with the series. Seems they ordered two more seasons.

I would think it would be Robert's oldest son (the blacksmith who is friends with Ayra)

EW on the the chain:

My thoughts on the chain: In the novels, Tyrion had the blacksmiths forge a massive linked iron chain in the weeks leading up to the battle. As the Wildfire attack began -- which included hurling pots of wildfire from the battlements -- the chain was raised across mouth of the bay, just a few feet above the waterline. The chain trapped Stannis' ships, where they piled against the blockage as the wildfire spread from ship to ship. It was an clever and key element to Tyrion's plan. Here's my guess why it wasn't included. The chain itself would have been relatively easy to render, but the chaotic and spectacular result (all the ships piling up against it, soldiers and fire spreading from ship to ship) was likely deemed too expensive. It's a really cool element, but ultimately not strictly necessary to tell the story of the battle in terms of what happens to our characters. Think of it this way: If you're a writer and must choose between including the Trojan Boat full of wildfire or the chain, you'd choose the Trojan Boat -- because it decimates a portion of Stannis' fleet with a relatively few quick CGI shots and has serious implications for Davos.

I didn't like it last night. I love Tyrion and the Hound was great but I like this show because of the dialogue. The explosion was cool but it was meh otherwise. Next week should be great though.

I thought it had some of the best dialogue of the season.

:goodposting: A travesty if Lena Headey doesn't get an Emmy nom for her work last night. And well, Peter Dinklage goes without saying.

I really wish HBO went with 12 episodes in a season instead of 10......or at least a 2 hour season finale.

Every time the credits flash I find myself saying, "really?? that's it?? It can't end now!"

Just started watching from the DVR and Tyrion with quite possibly his best line of the season: "You can't #### your way out of everything!" :lmao:

hey fellas I'm pretty sure spoilers will piss off people.
:shrug:I haven't read one word of the books but I'm a big fan of the show.I couldn't give a rat's ### if people talk about the book here. 1. It seems like the show doesn't follow book enough to keep even the people that have read the books guessing.2. Even if the entire show was "spoiled" it wouldn't deter me from watching it.

It looked like George R. R. Martin was the writer of this past episode so any changes were done with his blessing. As soon as the second season is over, I will read the series as I can't wait to find out the background and of course what happens next.

minor gripe re: Sansa and the Hound:

without a certain missing event, no way she turns down The Hound's offer to take her away from Kings Landing imo.

I do like how they are making her less naive/more manipulative.
Note from MT: I'm putting that in spoiler tags because . . .

It's not clear in the TV show that she turns down the Hound's offer. Sepinwall hasn't read the books, and in his latest column he assumes that Sansa will leave with him. It was ambiguous in the last episode.

Previously reading the books has not deterred me from watching the show. Actually, I subscribed to HBO specifically to watch Game of Thrones. However, there are some events in the story that I think are best experienced without warning, e.g. Ned's beheading.Enjoy.

I got beat down for saying this before, but the only two big draws HBO got going right now are GOT and boardwalk. Unless I miss my guess, they will turn around season 3 faster then 18 months.

Spoiler Question

(dont click if you haven't read Book 3)

Are we supposed to get the Red Wedding in these next few episodes?
