I'm curious about the reaction of those who hadn't read the books to the finale. Knowing that Dany was going to go into the fire and come out with three little friends was far different than if you weren't really clear on whether dragons ever existed and/or were the stuff of legend. Either way, I thought this was brilliant television, and a proud adaption of the source material.

I had no idea the dragons would hatch but I was thinking she will survive the fire obviously and have all the remaining people serve her since she was a Fire repellent woman. The Dragons sets up her story arc beautifully though.But as i said earlier the episode was the worst Thrones episode from the last few months but it was still good compared to other shows. But for a season finale it was all about guys heading off somewhere, seemed like it was setting up another episode where we would get some sort of closure.

Yeah. No choice but to read the books now. Was not expecting the little snarling dragons. Are we to understand that the "child" who died was a dragon? Half-dragon half human?

Dany put her trust in the wrong person. The sorceress slave woman was responsible for Khal's infection, as well as her baby's death. (She had provided advice and aid to Dany on her pregnancy! Although the show alludes to this, the book makes it a bit more clear.

I think it was Chekhov who once said that you never introduce dragon eggs in Act I if they're not going to hatch in Act V. I doubt that Martin intended it to be a surprise so much as a logical progression in the story.

need to stay out of here, since I didn't watch last night but:

got the books for father's day. Surprised at how young the Stark's are in the books. Bran = 7, Rob and Snow = 14, Ned = 35. And I think Dany is 13 (that makes Ned's outrage re: assassinating her a little more palatable).

Damn. Didn't they say early in the series that Dany was supposed to be 16 or so? I assumed Robb and Jonathan were more like 20 and 18 respectively and Bran was about 10 or 11, Sansa 13 or so and Arya around 9-10. Those were my guesses based purely on the show.

The show aged them up for a couple of reasons:1. They wanted older actors (easier to manage, nude scenes, etc..)

2. Martin had originally written the characters so young because he was going to have a 5 year gap in the middle of the story. He got rid of the gap and has said that, had he known he was going to do that, he would've written the kids older.

While this is true, lets not forget the setting. In a medieval like world, kids become adults when they can confidantly swing a sword or get pregnant. People lived shorter lives (especially the commoners). IE: 15 IS AN ADULT in this type of world.

We thought it was pretty awesome. She didn't get burned in an earlier episode, so we figured she had some kind of special dragon powers, but seeing those little dudes pop out with her was pretty awesome.I'm just so mad the show is over already and that we have to wait a year for the rest. We sort of yawned a little through the first episode or so, and it's now my favorite thing on TV period. This and the Killing were our two faves, and both are now on hold for a year with tons to resolve

Oh i understand that, but as a non book reader I had no idea what was going to happen, but in truth nothing did happen. Sets up next season nicely, but wanted one think to actually happen in the war, be it they kill Jaime or Sansa killed Joffrey. Something

Probably but fighting a faceless and brainless enemy aint cinematic or fun IMO.Zombies are good as a side quest for Jon and his story but I hope it doesnt become the focal point of show

Martin loves changing things up so quickly just from what we saw in season 1. Just looking at Ned's season 1. He went from being buddy buddy with Robert to not agreeing with him and quitting his post and getting slaughtered by Jaime. You expected a huge war, but next episode he is buddy buddy with Robert and back as kings Hand. then when Robert dies, he goes from threatening Cersi to leave ASAP and in a nano second goes from a position of strength to being labeled a traitor and put in dungeon. Martin loves the flip flopping real quickly. But the one problem i had was that ned never said out loud that Joffrey was a *******, I cant buy that someone like him and in his position wouldnt have yelled that aloud when they were putting him in the dungeon

Sure, but I was just addressing the differences between the characters' ages in the books vs the TV series and why there was a conscious effort to make them older on the show.

In the book Longlcaw, Jon's sword is extra long and he carries it strapped to his back. When they show them riding out the other side of the wall he is on a horse and has the sword strapped to his side. My thinking is that you can't carry it on your back while horseback.

I was looking forward to seeing him with it strapped on his back.

Yeah, most left and even some that had stayed after Drogo died left when she was saying that they would follow her.

I left off last night at the first Dany chapter(iirc) in the second book...can't wait to get home.

I would definitely read the first book. The series shows most of the critical events but the books give a ton of back-story that helps aid in understanding those events. Also, there was an incident during Robert's rebellion that the TV series only touched on - whereas the book gives a much more involved account - that seems to figure pretty largely in the story going forward.

This isn't a spoiler. Ros isn't in the books. She's an invention of the series, primarily a vehicle to allow us what are essentially solliquoys from characters like Theon, Littlefinger, and Pycelle. I actually thought that her character would morph into the character of Shae when she headed off to Kings Landing (as presumably the need for the "sexpostition" in the series would wane after the early episodes). I was wrong. I find the device clunky in the show, but it is hard for me evaluate as someone who has read the books.

Yes, that's the incident I'm referring to. You're right, it is never made clear just what Ned's promise was. Many readers find this interesting. That's all I will say.
