HBO - Song of Ice&Fire Series -Varsity Thread - no TV only whiners (2 Viewers)

i...cannot...believe...that i have to wait almost a year to see season 2. wtf?
Yeah, this and the NBA season ending within a week really sucks. When does Boardwalk Empire start up again?
HBO's getting ready to re-run last season starting 7/3. So probably late September/early October.
This is a big hit to my summertime Sunday night relaxation viewing time.
Yeah, I never got into Treme & True Blood.

Yeah, I never got into Treme & True Blood.
Never got into Treme either. I wish they just gave David Simon more seasons of The Wire instead of greenlighting this. True Blood is decent. Entourage hasn't been as good the last few seasons, but I'll watch the final season. Curb has a new season starting July 10 as well. That I'm definitely looking forward to.

I'm curious about the reaction of those who hadn't read the books to the finale. Knowing that Dany was going to go into the fire and come out with three little friends was far different than if you weren't really clear on whether dragons ever existed and/or were the stuff of legend. Either way, I thought this was brilliant television, and a proud adaption of the source material.
i liked the episode a lot. sure you could see some of the things coming, but you can't really expect a show to surprise you every week. For me, I thought it did a great job of cleaning up a few things (like Sansa and how she would be after Joffrey ruined her dreams, etc.), and really set the stage for the next season with each piece of the plot having some intrigue in it. I thought it was a real good episode, and I look forward to the dragons being part of the fix for the White Walkers (i have no idea if this is the case, but it would seem that fire-breathing dragons would be a good ally to have against the White Walkers)

Question for nonbook readers that I am curious about:What is your impression of Ros the redheaded whore as a character?
I'm not positive. I think she is an interesting character that has the capability to be more then a whore, and seems to align herself with all the powerful and right people (seeing how she seems to have slept with quite a few of the characters). I don't know how far she can move up the ladder from her status, and I don't know what her motivations are, but I think she'll be an interesting character. It is interesting to compare her to Tyrion's girl he is bringing with him back to the castle and the slave girl who Bran is hanging out with at the castle. All 3 women seem capable and intelligent enough to hold their own, the question is what does each want to accomplish. It seems like the Wild girl does not hold a strong allegiance with going back to her tribes, so i am really not sure where she will end up

I know nothing of this book/series. Just downloaded the first few episodes.

Is it worth the time? I have watched like 5 minutes of episode 1 and am intrigued.

Not having Mad Men doesnt' help either....but at least there will be Curb and Entourage.

I finished the book last night. The book certainly allows more insight into chatters and their motives, especially Ned and Tyrion. The show should have dine some flashbacks or dream sequences other than just with Bran's 3-eyed crow.

Some of those added scenes In the show that weren't in the book, however, were some of the strongest in the series and moved the story along quite well.

At this point I'd say HBO did an excellent job and I'm liking both iterations equally.

Starting Clash of Kings tonight!!

This for non readers, dont want spoilers. Just speculating Now that Danny got the dragons she will be super powerful obviously. But whats her objective? to wipe out all other kingdoms? I can see her and Robb's army team up to rule world. Joffrey cant survive this next season with all the armys coming against him. Will be interesting to see what happens when Renly and Stallin (whatever the brothers name is) want a piece of throne
Haven't read but 30 pages. But those dragons (fire) and going to be the realm's last bastion against the whitewalkers (ice). It's gotta be that way, no?

Games of Thrones finale hit a season high in total viewers (over 3 million in its initial telecast for the first time) and in the 18-49 demo.

Perhaps most important was the growth that it showed over the season. Nearly a 37% increase in viewership from premiere to finale.

If they're smart, they'll re-run the whole series this summer. Word of mouth is spreading and I have several friends who told me they're dropping Showtime and adding HBO just for this.

Yep, and I think the DVD release will also give them a boost for next season - not to mention make HBO a crapload of money. My guess is they'll wait to release the DVDs until the ramp-up for season two but I think that might be a mistake. Buzz is really, really high for the show right now. I would think getting it out before Christmas might help keep it going.

I think they will for sure have the DVDs ready before Christmas. Release those in late Nov/early Dec and then re-run the show in late Jan as the warmup to season 2.

Do non-book readers care about any of the differences between show and first book? If not, won't bother to post my thoughts as they come. But,

Was a little suprised to read that it was presumed/expected that Dany and her bro would breed. Makes the Lannister incest a little less shocking in their world. Pure bloodlines were all the rage, esp for those with dragon blood.

Incest was still taboo back then. It was only the Targaryens who practiced it and no one said anything about it to them because, hey they had dragons. If the Lannisters win the war and write the history, history will show their incest to be no big deal either. Cersei only mentioned the Targaryens because she was looking for justification for her actions, despite the fact that she was in love with Robert at one point.

We haven't seen Stannis Baratheon yet, right? The name was brought up several times, but he's supposed to be Robert and the gay guy's brother?

Correct. He's the middle brother and the oldest now that Robert's taking a dirt nap. Since Cersei's kids are illegitimate, he's got the best Baratheon claim to the throne.AFAIK he hasn't been cast yet and it'll be interesting to see who gets the part; also interested to see how the writers depict him.

I don't think we've seen him. He's Robert and Renly's other brother. He's living on Dragon Stone which was given to him by his brother after the rebellion. This was the home of the Targaryen's before they were vanquished.

Something the book guys know, but I don't (and am aching to find out) is why so many people seemed to be opposed to the idea of Stannis sitting on the Iron Throne.

:rubshandstogetherinanticipationthenrealizesspring2012isalongwayaway:

not really a spoiler, more bookish, but whatever:

This show doesn't seem to employ "flashbacks", but it would be cool to see a younger Robert wailing on some fools with the Hammer (like rhaegar targaryen).

I don't get the feeling that a lot of people are opposed to Stannis:

There are the Lannisters and those that don't know Joffrey isn't the rightful heir.

Renly feels that he would be a better king than Stannis.

The North doesn't want to be ruled by anyone from the south anymore. Even then, Rob called for Stannis to be king because he was the older brother.

I always took Rhaegar to be the most honorable of the Targaryens. Almost Ned-like but from a different family. I tend to think of Robert as the bad guy there.

Interesting, do the books elaborate on this later? I am barely into Book 1. I still don't understand what exactly happened to Ned's sister in the end (don't explain it if the books/show will lead me to the answer later - thanks)

I thought I recalled people saying on more than one occasion, something to the effect of : "You really want Stannis Baratheon on the throne?"

I wish HBO would replay the series with a Lost-style text box on the bottom to include more info. not necessarily because I think I missed stuff, but because watching the show with extra info might make it seem new again.

I don't want to wait for next season!!!

Question: why are all these other factions stating that Joffrey isn't the true heir or king? Ned never told anybody what he discovered, correct? The letter to Stannis from Ned never reached him as far as I know.

I think HBOGo does that with pop ups or something if you watch on line. I haven't tried it though

In the series the rationale was that Robert was a warrior/soldier and a poor king and that Stannis may be more of the same.

That was just Renly though; right?

I wondered the same thing.mild spoiler
Evidently most of the council is aware of this and it is alleged by Stannis in the second book when he announces it to the world. So he learned of it somewhere else or suspected it all along. They haven't really said where he learned it but I suspect Littlefinger.

Should I invest myself in this show? I haven't read the book nor am I a wizard and a robe guy. Tried watching the first episode and was very  but I have a feeling they were just building the plot.

If you haven't read A Clash of Kings, don't read this...
It's explained in A Clash of Kings that it was Stannis who first became suspicious and he planted the bug in Jon Arryn's ear. That's why he was with Jon Arryn when he went to see Gendry at the armorer's shop.

http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/06/23/game-of-thrones-casting/

HBO’s Game of Thrones has made its first casting hire for season 2:

Natalie Dormer, who memorably played the seductive and doomed Anne Boleyn on Showtime’s The Tudors, has been added to the fantasy drama’s regular cast.

Dormer will play Margaery Tyrell, a

(minor spoiler alert) beautiful and shrewd young woman from the influential House Tyrell. She’s pledged to marry the late King Robert’s brother, Renly Baratheon, as part of House Tyrell’s support for his bid to seize the Iron Throne from King Joffrey.

The eunich and the brothel guy know everyone's secrets. And the super old council guy that showed Ned the lineage book probably figured out the blond hair connection also.

Definitely. I don't usually go for fantasy/mystical/magical stuff but it's pretty good. You are right that the first episode isn't great. But it grows on you pretty quickly after that.
