HBO - Song of Ice&Fire Series -Varsity Thread - no TV only whiners (1 Viewer)

After my initial excitement with LOTR and its quality, I have been bored to snot by it upon many attempted repeat viewings.

Remained faithful to the book. Exactly the way that it happened in the book, with the reader first finding out what happened when Ned found out, and no mention of any funeral. Way too much stuff going on to go back to what happened to the King's body.

Same here. Love the books as a kid, and don't even feel like I can watch the movies anymore. (Having said that, I'm sure I'll still go see The Hobbit.)

Randall in Clerks2 was kinda right, bunch a dudes walking around and nothing happens.I still like it and its kinda like star wars for me, if its on TV and nothing else like NFL is on I will watch it.

Thanks to the True Blood premier there was a weekend of free HBO all weekend and I was able to catch up on all the episodes. Gotta say they did a great job with the series. Even the few "extra" new scenes they added that weren't in the books were very well done and served to illuminate many of the characters and their motivations. I particularily enjoyed I think 2 different "chats" between Littlefinger & Varys, the 2 puppetmasters behind the scenes.Hard part now is waiting. I stopped myself reading the series after book 2 so I could space it out in case book 6 takes another 5 years, but I don't know if I'll be able to resist any longer.

Finished ASOS on Tuesday, read most of it over the holiday weekend. Outstanding book, really makes me wish it was 3 years from now and I could see how they are going to film certain things for the tv show. But yeah, totally guessed the character/chapter, the foreshadowing is pretty heavy and very sad/infuriating when you finally make it there. That being said, it's amazing how Martin can make some events very obvious to the reader and others he can totally pull the wool over your eyes and surprise you.Think I will hold off on A Feast for Crows until the paperback for A Dance With Dragons is out and cheap. From all the commentary that I have read, those 2 probably will need to be read back to back to get the most out of them.

Nope - she's in book #2 in Theon's chapters when he arrives at the Iron Islands. She also shows up at Winterfell in book #2.
 
Man, Clash of Kings is great. I love how most things are just plain non-formulatic. Some things are kind of foreshadowed but even those things end up with some type of twist. I like that I'm kept on my toes.

Nope - she's in book #2 in Theon's chapters when he arrives at the Iron Islands. She also shows up at Winterfell in book #2.
I really like the casting for Asha. She's the only Greyjoy I actually like in the books, and she looks exactly like I pictured her. Bri is too good looking though. I know it's probably not easy to cast for "freakishly large, ugly woman", but hopefully they can makeup the fugly on her. I do like that she is listed at 6' 3" though. They got that part right.
 
So I ordered the books on July 1st from Amazon. They are telling me they will ship on July 12th and I should receive them sometime from the 15th - 18th.

WTF is that all about? I have sent 2 emails to Amazon and I ma getting the runaround. I have had very, very good experiences with Amazon and I cant think of anything that has taken more than a week to be delivered to my front door, What the hell is with the delay on these books?

What did you order? The first 4 as a group? Did you include the new book coming out Tuesday? And did you set your order to ship in total (as opposed to piecemeal)?The new book - A Dance With Dragons - doesn't release until Tuesday so if you ordered all 5 books and had "send in one shipment" checked, maybe they're holding the order until the 12th. That's one possibility.Another is that A Game Of Thrones (1st book in the series) is #1 on the NYT list. Sounds silly, but maybe they ran out?Like you, I've always had good luck with Amazon and in fact have gotten the majority of my orders earlier than the posted ship date. I'm guessing it's some combination the two possibilities I listed above. I would order the first 4 as a group (I think Amazon's selling them for $15-20) and Dance separately.
 
Damn I cannot put Clash of Kings down even as I sense

that Robb is about to get totally ####ed thinking Theon is going to attack Lannisport whereas he is actually going to get there a find a full force, only to be squeezed from the east by Tywin, pushed up from the South by Stannis (or at least not really being able to flee that way) and capped in the north by Theon's grimey ###. I'm just constantly on the edge of anger. I have some predictions, but I don't even want to post them anymore because even as something seems to be transpiring, something random happens that is so non-formulatic it throws the whole story off. Maybe that's why I like this so much. I've gotten so good over time to see what's coming in TV, movies, and books, anymore. But here, there is no formula, other than "you never know" pretty much.

I've never been so pissed at a book before than I was reading the Catielyn and Theon chapters (53/54)then the relief at the end of 54

Thanks. This was the issue. They told me this in the email I got back from them this morning. Kind of strange that their first 2 responses didn't mention the bundling of the order.
 
Good god

I switched the shipping method so as to split the 4 part series and new release so I could get the others faster. Geo an email tonight, that A Dance with Dragons has shipped, yet the other 4 are still "shipping soon".

This is annoying.

The third book is the shizzle.Basically, major plot devices are set up in the first two books -- on a grand scale, and since we're talking about GRRM, we're talking about dozens upon dozens of different characters -- and then all frigging heck bursts forth in the third book. It's amazing.Probably why so many people didn't like Feasts very much. In addition to it essentially being a half a book and all.I'm about 1/6 of the way through Dance and it's making its run for the best book in the series. Definitely at least runner-up.

Just started all the books after the series ended and I have two chapters left in Storm of Swords (a Sansa chapter and an Epilogue) and it is the best of the first three in my mind. I know I am going to start feast of crows as soon it is done but but I am a bit surprised to learn that some major characters don't even appear in the book. Especially some of the best characters in the book in my mind.
 
Got mine yesterday too. Finished rereading feast last night and read the first 2 chapters of dance. Funny the ending note on feast says to expect dance next year signed george rr martin 2005 good times.

I'm almost done with Clash of Kings. I really like it, but not as much as Thrones. I miss Ned I think and the mystery. I do feel though that Kings is just a long set up rather than really concluding anything, although as I said, I haven't completed the book just yet.

Yeah. I'd say it would be the other way around and you wouldn't want to read the books after watching the show first. It's a treat to look forward to seeing how they'll pull off certain scenes from the books.
A la, the Battle of the Blackwater from CoK. That should be pretty sweet.
 
Just got my set of the first 4 books and enjoying Thrones so far. I'm enjoying reading a few chapters, then watching the corresponding episode. I'd probably be pretty lost right now without the show due to the amount of characters thrown at you.

I can definitely see now why Sansa is less liked by the readers! I also didn't appreciate the attitude Jon gets from Catelyn. :rant:

That's probably true. I'm think I don't want to read the first book since I saw the show.
