I'm not a big reader anymore (much to my detriment, I know), but I couldn't finish Clash of Kings because Martin just meanders all over hell. One of the biggest bugaboos I had about The Passage and The Twelve was, what I felt, was extraneous info that added little to the story. And yet, at least the books were at least somewhat progressing towards a solution. Song of Ice and Fire seems like Lord of the Rings in a soap opera form. I think it's much better on TV than it is in book form. But that's just me.

DwD was absolutely maddening, especially after suffering through A Feast For Crows. I'd really like the time back that Martin just stole from me. Here's my impression of his newly found "bore em to tears" writing style:Step 1 - Be sure to include multiple chapters about new characters who appear from nowhere with no explanation of who they are or how they relate to any previous storylineStep 2 - Even in chapters about main characters who we've developed relationships with, be sure to introduce every g.d. minor and unimportant bit player. Spend pages detailing conversations between said bit players. Divert attention from anything interesting and confuse the reader as much as possibleStep 3 - Make the last page of each chapter interesting and with an unresolved cliff-hangerStep 4 - If something of interest does occur, be sure to spend as little time on it as possible. Jon Snow got killed, oh that is worth 2 paragraphs. 3 if you count the blurb about Ghost freaking out. Don't explain anything else about it. "For the watch". ok great, i can wait another 5 years to figure out what that meansStep 5 - Tease your reader...for at least 1000 pages. 1800 if you count books 4 and 5. Make sure nothing of consequence happens. if it does, refer to step 4Step 6 - Spend years writing the follow up book thus prolonging the agony of any poor sap who is now invested in the storylines. Well, the story lines from books 1-3 anyway seeing as how there are none from 4 & 5in summary, spend pages and pages writing about the weather, clothing, and food. Tie up each chapter with 1 page of moderately interesting plot and leave a major cliffhanger at the end of every stupid chapter. Don't return to that cliffhanger for years...literally

I have not read the books nor can I catch up due to my schedule but you did not mention either of the two girls above.Also, about viewership, I would assume the readers will be on board since they know whats coming. The rest of us, I include me since I have not read them, will surely miss out on some things but I am not minding so far. I doubt I will mind later.

Make the Red Wedding happen relatively early in the season. That could be a big shocker. Then have Joff at the 9th episode with the fall out in Episode 10. Next season gets us to Tyrion's arrest and trial by combat and Jon Snow coming back to the good side of the wall. With seasons 5 and 6 being a combination chronologically of Crows and Dragons, they could work weThat gives us 4 years, so we should have Winds of Winter before then and perhaps get to the final book even. Crows and Dragons I guess COULD end up as 3 seasons with all the new characters, so that a TV audience isn't overwhelmed.I actually think Jamie has become my favorite or #2 (to Tyrion) as teh books have progressed. The actor is really good as well, so I think as we dig deeper into his personality and depth of character, he can help carry and makeup for the losses that are coming.

I think to really sell the Rob story, they can't foreshadow ANY hint of treachery. They really need to hit the audience raw on that one. Doing it that early in a season would give the viewer enough time to really HATE Joffery/Tywin/The Frays....and it would be a HUGE shock to the audience. In the books, both deaths came fairly quickly together so their wasn't enough time to really despise them. You also have to fit in Khalesi stuff....and I think she's such a fan favorite; they don't want to punt her....keep in mind that her freeing of the slaves and getting her army is a tent pole for a season itself. Speaking on the books...I haven't read DwD yet (although I know a lot of what happens)......but it's almost like he shot his load too soon. How to you come back and top the Red Wedding/The War at the Wall/Jofferys demise and the battles Danerys fights?

I got to admit...if I like the world where the story is being told, I don't mind meandering. His payoffs, for the most part, have worked.

I have not read the books nor can I catch up due to my schedule but you did not mention either of the two girls above.Also, about viewership, I would assume the readers will be on board since they know whats coming. To not put too much of a fine point on them....Arya strives to learn exactly how that guy Jaquen(the guy who killed three times for her) did what he did and Sansa's story stagnates a bit as she finds refuge is a safe but boring place.

I'm not a big reader anymore (much to my detriment, I know), but I couldn't finish Clash of Kings because Martin just meanders all over hell. One of the biggest bugaboos I had about The Passage and The Twelve was, what I felt, was extraneous info that added little to the story. And yet, at least the books were at least somewhat progressing towards a solution. Song of Ice and Fire seems like Lord of the Rings in a soap opera form. I think it's much better on TV than it is in book form. But that's just me.

DwD was absolutely maddening, especially after suffering through A Feast For Crows. I'd really like the time back that Martin just stole from me. Here's my impression of his newly found "bore em to tears" writing style:Step 1 - Be sure to include multiple chapters about new characters who appear from nowhere with no explanation of who they are or how they relate to any previous storylineStep 2 - Even in chapters about main characters who we've developed relationships with, be sure to introduce every g.d. minor and unimportant bit player. Spend pages detailing conversations between said bit players. Divert attention from anything interesting and confuse the reader as much as possibleStep 3 - Make the last page of each chapter interesting and with an unresolved cliff-hangerStep 4 - If something of interest does occur, be sure to spend as little time on it as possible. 4 and 5 should have been one book. He ####ed that up. I also think the time between releases rubbed a lot of folks the wrong way given the lack of progress in dragons after such a long wait. Reading all 5 books consecutively the first time through, I don't have the same disdain for Crows. I rather enjoyed it when I think back on getting more into cersei and Jaime.

They won't or can't IMO. I was watching reruns of it the other day and realized that when a lot of the dust of the books settles the show could really take a hit in viewership. Ned,Robert,Renly,Drogo,Joffery,Robb,Tywin,Catelyn,Jeor Mormont...all dead and Tyrion exiled,Loras Tyrell severely injured, Jorah banished from the Khalisi,Theon gone....that's more or less most of the main characters from the first couple of seasons. They're either going to have to drag stuff out to extend these characters on the television or count on the Briene, Jon Snow, Cersi and Jamie characters (and Actors) to carry most of the water. The revelation that Littlefinger and Lysa, not the Lannisters, killed John Arryn was a pretty big one imo. Also, Lysa getting shoved out the moon door should be some good TV

George R.R. Martin signs deal to create new shows for HBO, since it's not like there's anything else he should be creating right now

Clearly enjoying the way this whole Game Of Thrones thing has panned out and not wishing to see it end any time soon, HBO has signed George R.R. Martin to develop new shows for the network, ensuring he'll be far too busy to wrap up the fantasy saga for a nice, long while. Under his two-year overall deal, Martin will stay on as executive producer and occasional writer for Game Of Thrones for the foreseeable future, while also using those two years to come up with new things—or, in George R.R. Martin time, around 60 pages of a new thing. Martin's prior TV credits include episodes for the 1980s versions of The Twilight Zone and Beauty And The Beast, which he should be wrapping up any day now. He takes a long time to write things.
