HBO - Song of Ice&Fire Series -Varsity Thread - no TV only whiners (3 Viewers)

I do kind of want a thread where I can freely talk about prophesies etc.

For instance, I think one has been fulfilled (I'm probably an idiot and this has been discussed). Melissandre wants to

spill royal blood as a sacrifice to awaken the stone dragons. She thinks this is Edrick Storm (likely Gendry in the show) and that the stone dragons are on Dragon Stone. She stays misreading her fires. Dany sacrificed her brother, who was truly royal blood, and her dragon eggs, which had become stone, sure enough hatched into dragons. So should we always look to Melissandre's prophesies as being misread? Although she certainly seems to be right about Jon Snow. What others are there?

We should just change this thread to the "I read all the books thread" or just create one.

Wasn't she wrong about whole the Arya/Jayne Poole reuniting with Jon Snow also?

I never thought about the bolded. Nice catch. Yes, keep thinking she's misreading things. That woman is an idiot, a dangerous idiot.

I think she mislead Snow on that one - perhaps on purpose. She only said she saw a woman/girl whom Snow cared about that would come to Castle Black. Wasn't the twist that the woman was his Wildling ex-girlfriend?

There already is an "I read all the books" thread.I thought that too but then some people didn't read it all yet so the spoilers needed to be used.

I think she and Jon assumed it was Arya, but Melissandre doesn't know for sure. Jon's wildling ex, Ygritte, died in an assault on Castle Black

What a fantastic episode. Feels like I've been saying it a lot, but that was one of my favorites in the entire series. This season rules.

I was pumped right from the opening scene. All the Arya/Brotherhood scenes were awesome, actually. One of the things that I'd wanted to see more was Arya's darker side. Feels like they've kept her at PG-13 level, but that anger inside of her is part of what makes the character so interesting in the books.

Man, Karstark's beheading was a powerful scene as well. It's Robb being like his dad, instead of doing the prudent thing.

Also, the Lannisters' interactions are always among the best parts of each episode. Excellent ending.

Glad to see Jamie starting to climb up from rock bottom. Despite his story, though, Brienne instinctively called out "KIngslayer" when he started to pass out in the tub, of course, he corrected her. Those two are one of my favorite storylines moving forward.

Happy also to see how they will introduce the Frey storyline with Robb.

I've got to hand it to Martin. It can't be easy to take a someone who was introduced to the readers attempting to murder a child in order to cover up their own incestuous affair and turn them into a sympathetic character.

I liked Cercei's reaction to Tywin's plan to marry her to Loras.
She's done a great job at being evil, conniving, arrogant Cersei when she had free reign and now becoming a petulant child whose arrogance is being hacked away by daddy. I didn't much care for her portrayal in S1, S2 she found her stride but was still pretty predictable in her reactions and relied mostly on the material but this season she's really showing depth and nailing every scene with haughtiness and shame. Great job.

Also have to hand it to the actor playing Jaime. I've never even heard of Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (yes I had to look it up), but he's done an incredible job going from a cocky, arrogant POS to the broken man we saw in the last episode.

I liked her "don't make me do it again." comment about getting married for alliances.

Jaime became one of my favorite characters in the books. Maybe right behind tyrion really.
Good post. Their respective arcs are fascinating.
It's funny to me because at first, you're just supposed to hate the Lannisters. And really, when I think of them as a whole, I still feel like I hate them, except that basically my two favorite characters are damn lions.
The one child best able to keep the Lannister family in a position of extreme power and sustainability is the one child Tywin detests the most. Cersei has shown the uncanny ability to be outwitted and unable to control Joffrey. Jaime is in the King's Guard and isn't ruthless enough to head the family and keep them empowered and feared (especially now after he's changing after his hand was cut off...).

These kids are growing like weeds, going to be tough to keep up without casting changes
I doubt the show cares about the kids ages, and would prefer they be older in any event.
I think the only character it poses a problem for is Arya. Being a small child was important.
Her storyline is garbage and really insignificant (so far) in the books so it would be surprising to see her scaled way back in the upcoming seasons.

Meh - she can still do everything including scenes in future years as a "teenager" The actress is 16 now, and is playing a 13-14 yo on TV. By the time she gets to Bravoes the character for TV could easily be a 16-yo without losing any of the translation from the books.

The TV audience won't have any problem with the characters aging (and probably would have had a problem had the characters played at their ages in the books).

I disagree, her story is my second favorite in the books. Love her chapters.

Also disagree

I think Arya, Bran, Danearyis, and Jon Snow are the four most important characters in the book to the ultimate ending (if there ever is one)

Why do you think Arya is important to the storyline? I think its just some wierd tangent that Martin got on and cannot seem to end it. He has stated numerous times that he put way too many "balls in the air" and doesnt know how to wrap up certain storylines. I am assuming Arya is one because she has no interaction or advancement to the other characters or main plot.

I enjoy her chapters immensely, but I agree that she seems too far away from the main conflict to come into play with her new skills.

I am looking for the article where he is interviewed about adod and he makes the comments about too many character and storylines. I have to think he is referring to her

I really like her storyline in the books, pulling of Cat of the Canals will be tougher for a teen IMO
She better start taking gymnastic/ninja classes.

Her face is a bit round right now. I envision her being more scrawny than she currently appears on screen.

So why is Varys a Targaryan supporter? In Jaime's speech he stated how Varys told the mad king not to open the gates. If Varys is all about whats best for the realm, you'd have to think the mad king being taken out was a step in that direction. Especially with Raegar dead already.

My guess would be that he is hedging his bets and wants to gain everyone's trust.

Given all the people who have wronged the Starks over the first five books, I'm pretty sure Martin can find a way to get a Stark/master assassin on a boat back to westeros and involved in the main conflict.

For sure. She's still a work in progress at this point. Can't wait to see her final set of skills.

I could see her working her way back through her list

There's also a certain faceless man in Oldtown trying to find texts on how to kill dragons. There's also a dire wolf left loose in the middle of Westeros with which Arya has a nascent warg connection. I don't think Arya is just a side plot.

I'm intrigued by Bran's role. It's a slow and odd story but I wonder if he'll gain Poison Ivy type superpowers.

I suppose it depends on your view of what the story line really is...

0. She kicks Joffrey's ###

1. She saw her fathers head chopped off

2. She escapes

3. She vows revenge

4. She was captured

5. She meets a mystery man who can change his face (we later learn someone with similar abilities is attempting to break in a steal something from the Citadel.

6. She escapes

7. She vows revenge

8. She is recaptured

9. She escapes

10. She vows revenge

11. She is "recaptured" by the Hound who intends to take her "home" or as close thereto as he can get her.

12. She escapes

13. She vows revenge

That is all before she gets to Bravos and the Faceless men. And before she trains to become an assassin. Did I mention she is sorta into a whole revenge thing? Too bad everyone she intends to kill will be already be dead. Oh, and that whole "Huge wolf wandering the countryside leading a smaller pack of wolves" dream thing. That too.

I'd say she has had the most varied experience, traveling far and wide. And her exposure and interaction with many of the players characters is pretty good stuff. Hell, she heard the entire plot to have/get Ned skill when she was chasing a cat in the bowels of the Red Keep.

I found it interesting to see the foreshadowing in her convo with Dondarion last week. She was asking if they could bring back her father. Meanwhile, they will be bringing back her mother...
That said, she is probably my 5th favorite POV to read.

:nerd: :nerd: :nerd:

Because the Mad King was the exception, not the rule. With the Targaryens in charge, the Realm experienced 300+ years of relative peace. Before their time, the 7 kings fought with each other and with lesser lords constantly. The common folk in that time were nothing but pawns in the chess game their lords played with other lords. After the Targaryens conquered the land, the life of the common man improved immeasurably. If Varys is truly for Targaryen rule, it has to do with this.
