Lit dork comment:

One day, if I'm bored at the beach on vacation or something, I need to go back and reread the Riverrun mentioning (specially the siege) to search for Finnegan's Wake hat tips. It might just be as simple as Martin naming the place Riverrun in tribute, but then again, maybe there's more to it.

Shea going with Sansa makes no sense. Tyrion finding Shea in his father's bed is a huge part of that scene and I seriously doubt they are going to change that.
agree.

Showing Tywin as a hypocrite, and tying it back to Tyrion's biggest life event (his first marriage), that implicates Jamie too, is at the core of Tyrion's story. Isn't the guilt what motivated Jamie to set Tyrion free?

Hell, the hypocrisy is Tywin's dying breath.

Where ever whores go... *Thrum*

It hasn't been fully developed in the show yet, but its a ripe topic.

New chapter from Winds of Winter: Mercy
Dated Jan 2013? Had not seen that before and thought I had read all available chapters.
I believe they just neglected to change the date from the previous posting. If you look at his "Not a blog" section, it indicates that it is a new posting.
Figured it was something like that. Thanks parrot.
Anybody have links to the rest of the available chapters? I vaguely remember trying to go through his blog and find them but it was cluttered with a bunch of crap.

I've avoided all of the early release chapters. As tempting as it is, it feels like it would take away from the book when/if it ever does come out.

Yeah his website is a mess. Can't find the other sample chapters.
That's because he takes one down when he releases another. I'm sure people have hard-copied them as they've been released. I would make friends with members in some of the fan forums and take it from there. The reddit forum and asoiaf forum are probably your best bets.

Awesome read! this character
Is it the first Arya chapter of the book or further in... not sure I want to know too much, but wouldn't mind something to hold me over.

/crack
It's pretty much stand-alone. I think it's mostly just a set up to give her a reason to go back to Westeros.
There are one or two tidbits that may be spoilerish for what's happening elsewhere, They are being argued over endlessly on the ASOIAF boards. I missed it on my read - shocking, I know - as it's a timing thing involving a fairly minor character.

Will need to check that out. Was it related to the lions guarding the chicken? Couldn't quite sort that out, but I think it means something.

Yea, can we get a summary here, Uruk? I recognized the Black Pearl as Cersei's former friend/plaything, but could't recall who the chicken was either.

Yep

The guards (Lions) with Swyft (chicken) are talking about the "Queen" wanting a dwarf's (Tyrion's) head. Some think that means Cersei won her trial by combat and is back in power. Swyft was dispatched right before Kevan was killed in ADWD while Cersei was still awaiting her trial, so his guards should know her situation. Myself, I'm leaning towards it being thought of by the smallfolk as a "standing order" by the Crown to bring Tyrion's head in for reward. But I've been wrong on just about every guess I've made so far, so take that for what it's worth.

I didn't connect the Black Pearl with Taena. Nor has any other theory I've read, but maybe so.....

The Black Pearl is supposedly descended from Aegon IV and is a famed courtesan. Maybe she IS Taena. If so, you've got claiming rights as far as I know.
See my post above for what I meant.

This is a good example of why I love these books. Everything is tied together in thousands of small ways.

btw... for the serious ASOIAF :nerd: , read The Grand Northern Conspiracy

I'm pretty sure they've got this nailed down almost entirely and it shows just how great these books are that he's left all the information you need to figure it out without any overt indication that it's happening. It's brilliant. And if it goes down as presented in that link, it will be orgasmic.

Intro idea...

Among ADWD’s most memorable crowning moments of awesome are the northmen expressing their undying love for and loyalty to the Starks despite the house seemingly teetering on the verge of extinction—heirs dead, missing, or in captivity; ancestral seat of Winterfell in ruins and occupied by enemies.

Ten-year-old Lyanna Mormont roundly rejects Stannis Baratheon as her king.

Bear Island knows no king but the King in the North, whose name is STARK. (Jon I, ADWD)

Wylla Manderly, a girl of no more than fifteen, finds the treacherous lies of the Freys unbearable and denounces them for all her grandfather’s court to hear.

A thousand years before the Conquest, a promise was made, and oaths were sworn in the Wolf’s Den before the old gods and the new. When we were sore beset and friendless, hounded from our homes and in peril of our lives, the wolves took us in and nourished us and protected us against our enemies. The city is built upon the land they gave us. In return, we swore that we should always be their men. Stark men!” (Davos III, ADWD)

Northern hill clansmen brave death by winter and the sword both, hundreds making a grueling march to Winterfell, for a chance to save Ned Stark’s daughter.

Winter is almost upon us, boy. And winter is death. I would sooner my men die fighting for the Ned’s little girl than alone and hungry in the snow, weeping tears that freeze upon their cheeks. No one sings songs of men who die like that. As for me, I am old. This will be my last winter. Let me bathe in Bolton blood before I die. I want to feel it spatter across my face when my axe bites deep into a Bolton skull. I want to lick it off my lips and die with the taste of it on my tongue.” (Asha II, The King’s Prize, ADWD)

And, of course, Wyman Manderly, who’s so bold as to bake his foes into Frey pies and serve them to the usurping Boltons at a wedding feast.

Foes and false friends are all around me, Lord Davos. They infest my city like roaches, and at night I feel them crawling over me.” The fat man’s fingers coiled into a fist, and all his chins trembled. “My son Wendel came to the Twins a guest. He ate Lord Walder’s bread and salt, hung his sword upon the wall to feast with friends. And they murdered him. Murdered, I say, and may the Freys choke upon their fables. I drink with Jared, jape with Symond, promise Rhaegar the hand of my own beloved granddaughter… but never think that means I have forgotten. The north remembers, Lord Davos. The north remembers, and the mummer’s farce is almost done.” (Davos IV, ADWD)

It’s all terribly inspiring and, upon realization of Manderly’s deception, of just how deep hatred for the Boltons and Freys runs, some began to wonder if there isn’t more to it. Thus was born The Grand Northern Conspiracy.

I'm ALMOST in all the way on the GNC. Maybe I'm a little too cautious, but "the North remembers" and "Ned's little girl" sent chills up my spine when I read each of those passages.

The themes of honor and duty run heavy through the books, so this whole idea would make perfect sense.

It's like Faramir riding to the dead city knowing he and his men are doomed, or Theoden riding to Helm's Deep because the fires have been lit -- but from the bottom up, written small and with intricate detail. It is stirring.

I'm not a spoiler snob, but can we put discussion about the leaked chapters of winds of winter in spoilers or maybe there should be a thread for that book like there was for dragons? I don't want to miss release date news though.

Is this the conspiracy that the north was making a power play back before Roberts rebellion or something else?

Leeroy, I apologize if my posts have ####ed things up. I've been criticized in this thread for both using spoiler tags and not using them.

Reading the Great Northern Conspiracy. Totally forgot that Robb legitimatized Jon by royal decree before he died. Wow.

That's what I mean about everything is connected and has a reason. What seemed like a throwaway paragraph during Robb's camp in the Neck doesn't just disappear. Those people actually went and did what they were told to do (apparently).

There are tons of other hints at it too, but you have to read so carefully to piece it together. Love that it's all there, but tucked into the most offhand corners of the main story.

I agree. That's the true genius of Martin.

Night's King story is in the novels. GRRM has written some novellas about Dunk (Ser Duncan the Tall) and Egg (one of the Aegons). Bloodraven (an albino ******* Targaryen wizard with one eye) plays a role in these novellas. I have them in pdf format (with some typos) if you would like them - just PM me your email address.
Read the first two, awesome stories! Thanks again for sending

Anyone who likes the GOT books definitely worth reading.

Thanks - if you download the World of Ice and Fire app and pay for the extras ($5 I think), you can read more about Bloodraven. For reference his real name is; Brynden Rivers.

Finished The Mystery Knight today, the politics really come to life in that one

So I just finished ADWD. I got through all five in just over 3 months. I haven't read a book in about 15 years

:wall: to the end of the last chapter on Jon

I probably missed some detail or nuance, but who actually killed Joffrey? I thought Sansa was told it was Lady Olenna but Tyrion kept saying it was him, even to Jamie. Is that just a mummers farce?
I"ll probably have more questions but that one bugged me.

Lady Olenna slipped something that looked like the stones in her hairnet into Joffrey's drink I believe. Read it again as if you already knew that.

Basically it is an encyclopedia/history of all the people, places, houses, and events that GRRM has written about.

Tyrion said that because he was pissed at Jaime's secret regarding Tyrion's first wife. He said it to hurt Jaime. Lady Olenna and Littlefinger (and presumably Margaery) plotted to kill Joffrey. Littlefinger had to be involved since it was Dontos that gave Sansa the hairnet with the poison. It was Lady Olenna who grabbed one of the crystals off the hairnet. It was either her or Margaery who put the poison in the wine. We would pretty much have to assume that Margaery knew it was going to happen because she had to make sure that she didn't drink any of the poison and, according to Littlefinger, protecting her and Loras was the motivation behind Lady Olenna's wanting to kill Joffrey in the first place.
