The wall battle wasn't that long or drawn out in the books though. IIRC, Stannis comes in waxes everyone in short order, and it's over in just a few pages.

What book and chapter was this in? I wanted to go re-read this battle

Somewhere near the end of Storm of Swords. Not sure which chapter, but almost certainly a Jon Snow one.

ASoS. Jon VIII & IX. Actually the battle for the gate goes on for days in the book, before Slynt orders Jon to go out and try to kill Mace.

Yeah, you're right. I was referring to how long the battle lasts after Stannis gets there.

They have the plague and siege to work with for Danny. That can be stretched out. Add in the iron born stuff and you've got some runway to play with. They can **** around with Sansa in the Vale visiting various houses etc. for a while too if need be.

Can't do too much of this can they? The whole idea is the north assumes the Starks are gone - doesn't seem likely that they would let her galavant around the Vale as Sansa Stark. If I recall the books, nobody knew her as Sansa outside of Lysa, did they?

Not as Sansa but Little fingers Niese. The goal is for Robin to leave the nest and spread his wings. She'll be with them, lots you can do there IMO(will people recognize her etc.)

With the amount of complaining and lack of paying attention in the other thread, I'm worried about the show losing viewers over the next season or two and the show not making through the end of the books.

Are views trending in a bad direction?

Anecdotaly, the funniest thing about non book complaints are that they're more or less complaining about the stuff that wasn't in the books; but was added.

In hindsight, if they were looking to pad these stories in an effort to give Martin some time....they should have done this season, more or less by the book and then gone with a Robert's Rebellion season for next year...... with the reveal at the finale being that Jon Snow is Rheagar and Lyanna Stark's kid. The would have given them major pop when they started Season 6 AND have put the series on a concrete path to what most presume to be the final conflict (Dany, Jon, Tyrion and Dragons versus The White Walkers). Can you imagine the outrage and shock, when showing the significance of Jon's heritage....only to have him stabbed at the end of Season 6? Epic........

If they did an entire season solely as a flashback, that would confuse the non-book readers even more. Imagine when season 6 begins and everyone is asking "Wait... who was that guy again?"

If they framed it right, it could work. Shows like The Wire went season to season introducing new points and characters. Hell, GoT has seen a pretty big transition in POV and main characters.

Looking ahead, I don't know how much pop they'll gleam from the upcoming story threads....significant time with the Boltons, Briene, Stannis at the Wall and new characters in Dorne IMO, isn't going to blow up many skirts. Nevermind the idea that the Dany story will bog down and the Tyrion storyline will introduce a whole new cog in the machine.

To me, the show should be tighter than it is and this past season as meandered in a bad direction. I don't know how much of the added content is an effort to pad or maybe the show creators trying to make their own unique mark.....but I think this thing will bog down more....*

If anything with the Dany story they could of spent more time in Qarth and the other slavers bay cities.

I liked the Arya and Tyrion parts of books 4/5 - I could see them doing quite a bit with them. Some of what went on in the north was interesting. I'm also somewhat looking forward to seeing how they visualize Quentyn's demise.

They could expand the Sparrows/High Septon storyline and stretch out both Margery & Cersei's battles against each other and then their inquisition. I can see recasting Kevan Lannister and introducing him to take over for an incarcerated Cersei in season 6. If they do it right like they did with Oberyn, you could have a great character everyone loves, and then brutally kill him towards the end of the season.

More and more, we'll get to see lots of new stuff. No doubt the writers will be excited to have more license with the characters.

A LOT of time will be spent in Dorne if the casting news is correct.

There's a lot of meat to Cercei's storyline in AFFC and I suspect next season will spend a fair amount of time in Kings Landing. I could see S5 ending up with her arrest, Tyrion's capture by Jorah, Jon allowing the wildlings through the Wall, Arya going blind, Jaime burning the letter, Sam getting to Oldtown - somewhere around those places in the story for those characters. I guess they could flip some of Sansa's AFFC events to happening while she's travelling instead of at the Eyrie. I have no idea what they're going to do with Bran. Devoting a lot of time to Dorne and/or the Ironborn could be tricky.

Also, this season doesn't HAVE to resolve every single story to where it was at the end of ASOS (some are already well past it). Were I the show, I'd try to move no more than 4 or 5 characters in this last episode - and even that may be too much - and get back in touch with the rest next year.

I dont think the Ironborn stuff will sit well with the TV audience and will be scaled back. The horn for dragon control and the ships to get the army to Westeros can be introduced in a much shorter way.

Same for Dorne to some extent, but they have gotten a bit more play this season so the connection is there, and they need to advance that storyline for the stuff with Dany to be interesting next season.

I wouldnt mind seeing Stoneheart be cut either, not seeing the value in that storyline.

They might be able to accomplish the same thing with just Pycelle and not Kevan.

True, although they have depicted Pycelle as a depraved, philandering Cersei-serving follower.

As for Kevan being milquetoast, just because someone read it that way in the books, doesnt mean it has to be depicted that way on the screen. I've always seen a bit of Ned Stark in Kevan's character. Good for the realm, best of intentions and capable, but cut down for getting in the way of grander ambitions.

That was one of the more satisfying things in the last few books, seeing a character you cant stand make epic fail after epic fail. Lena Headley took her clothes off for 300, be interesting if she'll do it again for the show.

I disagree about Young Griff. He has the most legitimate claim of anyone, and it could be potentially interesting given the power vacuum in Kings Landing. Throw that in with the possibility of Daenerys getting off her dead ### and crossing the ocean at some point, and it could be fun.

Of course, a lot of things need to fall into place here in the real world. GRRM has to do two things. A) live long enough to finish the book, and B) not #### it all up. Neither are a certainty. But if that happens, Young Griff's storyline *might* be integral to everything.

I think, in broad terms, it's unfolding in the show as it did in the books. The "Game of Thrones" part was central for many of the books, not just the first one. As the books get further along you begin to realize that it's ultimately irrelevant compared to what's brewing up north. I think it will go that away, eventually, in the show as well.

I was hoping for a Stoneheart reveal, just to enjoy reaction of non-book readers.

Really great effects on those skeleton soldiers, that was done well.

And Brienne/Hound was a much better fight scene than the Mountain/Viper. That was great.

Good season finale- hit most of the expected scenes, and did them well.

Did Brienne and Hound fight in the books? I don't recall that. It was so long ago that I was surprised. I don't ever remember her being badass enough to take out the Hound.
