HC, Mike McDaniel - MIA (1 Viewer)

Ministry of Pain

Footballguy
He was never the top choice for Miami, they interviewed many or tried to interview coaches who politely declined after Miami was caught cheating
Stephen Ross was suspended for 8 games, not many owners that I can recall have ever been given that kid of punishment.
Whether you believe Ross tried to throw football games or gave orders to Flores, moot points.
Ross was officially suspended for tampering with Brady and Sean Payton, that's what the NFL said
But all that Flores noise and accusations after he was fired did not help in the head coaching search

I'm telling you that because Mike McDaniel was like 5th or 6th on the list so he really wasn't this hot candidate that everyone thinks was some mastermind at San Fran
They've done just fine without him
McDaniel inherited a very talented team that even had the addition of Tyreek Hill before he ever called a play for the Miami Dolphins, he didn't rebuild a stripped down team

Miami went 9-8 the season before he arrived, they went 9-9 including a 34-31 loss to Buffalo where on a crucial 4th and 1 late in the game with Miami having a chance to win, McDaniel and the coaches can't get the play call in...4th and 1 becomes 4th and 6, McDaniel showed he was not up tot the moment and many Phins fans forgive that moment

And then 2023 starts off with a BANG! and it looked like the Phins were going to turn the corner and then the season unraveled, injuries played a huge part but again he inherited some real talent and really over 2 seasons didn't win the AFC East, the team didn't really produce anything beyond the previous regimes if you measure playoff wins
Sure it looked better but in the end there wasn't much beef when they needed it

He is being exposed with Tua out and has no answers whatsoever but I am going to take i up a notch because nobody else seems to want to address this head on
McDaniel is a weasel and I say that BECAUSE he still is wanting Tua to return, by now he should know that he should not be playing him every week, he's killing that kid
Flore was right when he told Tua he relly doesn't belong in the NFL.
If you can play but sustain major concussions all the time or when you do get one, the entire social media world goes NUTS!
Tua is a unique player that everyone wants to protect and that's not a good sign for your starting QB
McDaniel should have Thompson ready to play by Year 3 since he's a QB guru and Miami shouldn't look like they do right now

I'm tired of this turkey getting a free pass while a potential dumpster fire is getting ready to take over Miami in 2024
Skylar Thompson looked slow to throw today and I think he left the game with injury/mild concussion, Miami might have to start Tim Boyle next week
The best thing for the Miami franchise and the fan base whether they believe it or not, it would be best to just lose the rest of '24 as painful as it might be
I don't know what the Shark Pool thinks of McDaniel and I don't think the majority of Phins fans feel the same as I do
But I'm sick and tired of McDaniel being praised as a Top 10 Head Coach in the NFL, he isn't

I see a lot of what you see. One of my son's friends that's in our "home league" is a dolphins fan. Very sweet kid. Also a Bama fan and is very involved in the local football scene. We have a Bills fan too, great kid. In any case, I see a lot of what you see.

The counterpoint is that it's still early to finish this chapter up my man. Maybe he's a weasel but maybe he just needs to dig deep and find a new gear.

It's awesome to see teams that you thought stunk storm the league for a bit but it always takes a while to know for sure if they have something that will be the difference. Right now, the Chiefs have it and everyone else is trying to come up with a better mousetrap. Even if McDaniel ends up not getting the team to the top, he sure had the league on the run for a while.

meh

Agree he has seems to get a lot of praise from the media, and more than he deserves. Don't understand how you don't upgrade the backup QB with Tua as the starter. Seemed like they tried to do that last year w/ Mike White who seemed like a decent backup, not sure how Skylar beat him out, maybe to save money? If they had someone like Flacco or Dalton next few games could be a lot different. I guess that's only a small thing relative to your larger point though.

White was a complete waste IMHO after Skyler started in the Playoffs in '22, just keep going with him.
If anything they slowed his growth by making him the emergency QB all last season

I hear you on the back up, but Miami hasn't had a starting QB in 20-25 years
But Miami is a victim of injuries, concussions, bad luck, mean former coaches that didn't tell the QB he was all that and a bag of chips
I hate that Miami took on that type of personality with a QB everyone wants to run and shield from danger

It's complicated and I have to be a little careful not to go the wrong way here but that victim mentality IMHO is not good
All i heard last year down the stretch were the injuries but we also see terrible designed plays that start in the parking lot with a backwards pass or toss/pitch
They don't work and he keeps dialing them up

Both McD and Tua were highly exposed last season in December and January.

Waiting for the next rebuild because it’s coming and a completely new front office, head coach and QB are incoming inside two years.

Anyway……at least we have the Canes and Panthers.

I thought you might enjoy this one, long overdue
-He's a product of what the media "thinks" a modern NFL head coach is suppose to be vs old school hard knox fundamentals which is what typically wins
This team is a house of cards that spent all their cap on a QB and 2 WRs but never thought for long about how they were going to protect them so they could perform at a high level
Because when Tua was asked about losing his entire IOL plus always having a LT in and out of the line up, his response was I get the ball out in 2 seconds so it doesn't matter
Well believe me it matters and Skylar could not get the ball out in under 3 seconds today, held the ball a long time and exacerbated the problems with the OL
He took brutal hit after hit back there, I'll be shocked if he is able to start next week

-Fans are not going to believe after all that money shelled out for Tua, Hill, Waddle and Ramsey recently and in less than a week from Week 1 to TNF-BuF, the season is over
And it's time to start thinking about rebuilding and reshaping the team, it's sad but if it's dragged out over 2-3 years, only people who suffer are the fans, Ross skates by

Everyone was saying he was a genius last season. What happened?
"Everyone" is the media and we have a lot of diversity in there now I'll say and not everyone seems to value or understand what makes a good coach
They think he's a great coach because he picked up the phone and called Tua immediately after being hired and made sure to video tape it to make him look like a savior/great guy
He wants to make sure he orchestrates a front that shows he is an understanding and sympathetic figure

What I'm really saying is the media wants to focus on things that are not as important.
Does all of the back and forth between McDaniel and his offense, do they have a safe space where they can all get their feelings out?
I think you understand what I'm saying here

Everyone was saying he was a genius last season. What happened?
Like MOP said, "everyone" was mostly the media. Most of the people in this thread watched every second of every game. If you did that it would have been apparent that Miami was not really that good. I printed money betting against the Phins during the second half of the season. That dulled the pain slightly, but not much.

I think McDaniel is an average coach at best. The entire FO is a joke. They don't know how to build a team. We've got a lot of good parts, but also a lot of holes. The biggest, most obvious mistake was signing Tua to a massive deal. The day it happened, I felt I like I was punched in the gut. I knew that was the nail in the coffin.

This team is bad. The coach is bad. The organization is bad. The only reason I'm not that depressed about it is that I've had decades to get used to it. Same old Dolphins. If they win an SB in my lifetime, I'll be shocked. I'm hoping that is at least 40 more shots. But whatever it may be, I'd bet against it.

No coach is going to be successful with Skylar Thompson at QB, love or hate Tua but he was (is) a good fit for what McDaniel wants to do offensively. I'm now in the camp with you guys that we need to be looking beyond Tua but I don't care if Andy Reid was here were aren't winning with the current backup QB. I would expect they get Tyler Huntly up to speed this week and we see him next game. He has looked much closer to being a normal NFL backup then Skyler or Boyle, plus his ability to escape will be a plus behind this line.

I know you like to say that Ross's suspension kept other coaches away, it didn't help but I'll double down that it was Flores lawsuit and the fallout that was the biggest reason. I'll dislike that guy until he is out of the league.

100% on the lawsuit by Flores but what made Flores files the lawsuit to begin with...Stephen Ross

Tua is going to be ready to suit up when he comes off injured reserve and I feel like McDaniel makes it appear that he just wants what is best for Tua but he never says anything close to what the media reports about the dangers of Tua suiting up again

And he's a polarizing player, what other QB/player has fans running to hug them to try and protect him like a human shield from continuing to hurt himself playing football
But Mike McDaniel knows that he looks terrible as a head coach without Tua as his QB, it's been proven thus far

He will ride Tua into the dirt literally it seems.
That kiss coming off the field grossed me out, the media loved it though.

I agree and I disagree here. Most new HC need a few things to break right for them. I can spend a ton of time going through Dolphin HC since Jimmy was here and their plusses and minuses, but what I will say here is that McDaniel is not someone you should let slip away.

Flores was an A-hole. He will be a good HC some day but he needed the "firing" to understand what he got wrong.
Dan Campbell was an interim for us and you knew he was going to be a good HC someday, but he needed more seasoning. You are seeing that.

The problem here is Miami's window and what they cannot/do not do well, and this extends much farther back that McD as coach:
-They can't draft O linemen to save their lives
-They are never "pro-active" in the QB space.

McDaniel and his staff have managed to hide the first issue with their jet motions and game plan, but we ain't the bills who can line up 6 o linemen and just pound on you.
The QB thing was basically they were up against a wall here with Tua.

Now, McDaniel does have to get better at his job. He could have run the ball all day vs Seattle but kept being cute about his playcalling and that cost us (I would argue the non call on a horse collar tackle in the first quarter was a bigger issue, but Miami has been unlucky with the ball bounces and refs these past few weeks).

I see a lot of passes to bad Tight ends and Julian Hill is a drive killer all by himself (but McDaniel keeps trucking him out there).

I'd give Mcdaniel a long rope to figure this out. Greer maybe not so much. Then again, I hate this HC/GM cycle we evidently are still in.

McDaniel is a weasel and I say that BECAUSE he still is wanting Tua to return, by now he should know that he should not be playing him every week, he's killing that kid
This isn't on McDaniel. If the doctors say he's ok and Tua is willing to assume the risk for another bajillion dollars what's a coach supposed to do? He's paid to win games and that's easier to do with the better players than it is with scrubs like Thompson. This isn't some grumpy 85 year old white man chewing on a bag of nails picking Tua up off the turf, snapping open a smelling salt, and fireman carrying him back to the huddle to run one last QB dive on the goalline to win the school's 24th state championship.

I remember that movie!

All my opinion. I don't know the guy personally. He just gives me those Mike Martz vibes where he is a solid offensive coordinator as long as he has a strong head coach. And thats okay. Being an NFL coach isnt easy.

Disagree....he sucks. Guy has never even been a legit OC (one stinking year....one!!!!) yet here he is running a billion dollar pile of **** team and offense.

Only in America.

You know maybe comparing him to Martz was a little much. Ha ha. I think my point is he just aint he's coach material.

Dude, this guy actually said this in August. What on God’s green? This was ostensibly a football press conference.

“Good morning. No it’s great.” - McDaniel

“Why is it great?” - Reporter

“Because we’re another day closer to death.” - McDaniel

Later in the article the author says:

“The Dolphins have already given up. They are the football equivalent of a cry for help. Defending them would merely be feeding their dysfunction.”

Aug. 7, Mike Tanier

Tanier on McDaniel at the Defector. I guarantee you that if you dislike McDaniel and Grier that you will heart this hella.

I think I have been ranting all of this the last 4 years here.......this guy cracked me up. What I don't agree with is Tyreek and Waddle are a joy to watch.

They had two months of joy in 2023.......that's it.

Achane is our only real offensive asset now.

Maybe it's harder to coach when your piss is hot? I think the two things killing his results is the Miami O line and Tuas lack of arm strength. The problem is he has to adjust to those and he isn't.

Remember that under McDaniel Tua and Hill were in the MVP conversation. And Hill caught more long passes under Tua than Mahomes. That's because defenses didn’t respect Tua enough. But now that the 2 high safety is the plan when facing Tua (or blitzing) McDaniel adjustments are not working and simultaneously the oline has gotten worse - remember Armstead, Connor Williams, and Robert Hunt. They were able to overcome weak links like Liam.

One anomaly with the McDaniel offense is the non-use of a QB's best friend, the TE. Aside from last year, Miami hasn't use TEs. Depending on Waller is GM malpractice. Not throwing to our current mediocre TEs is coaching malpractice. Last night, Allen threw 7 passes to TEs, Miami only 2 not counting the last meaningless pass to Conner. There was a 16 yard completion to Julian Hill negated by lineman downfield - there should be more of that.

Patrick Paul, the Left Tackle from last year's draft looks decent in the first 2-3 weeks, I've seen him move a few guys around, especially run blocking which I think he enjoys
If the rookie LG can get with the program, he looked better last night.
I hate to say it but that would be encouraging if the LT-LG-C section plus Ollie Gordon can at least get a yd or two on 3rd and short
It's unfortunate the side that is weakest is Tua's blind side.

Tua's interception when Miami was driving down 28-21 late 4th, just inexcusable and I don't remember him having anyone right in his face on the throw.
Felt like Buffalo had been waiting to jump on one of his passes

I wouldn't even think abut firing McDaniel until they get to the bye week in Week 8 for a few reasons.
3 of the next 4 games Miami should be very competitive, you have vets on this team among 53 guys, you can't just fire the coach 3 weeks in
Even if McDaniel loses the games along the way but they're close, you gotta keep him on. There's no reason to insert any of these assistants
Most of them are part of the contribution to this mess, they all pretty much need to go.
If McDaniel can go 2-15, why stop it? Let him look like a buffoon the rest of the season, he's the right guy to take Miami to possible prosperity in the Draft

-Don't try and stop that like in season's past. They let Cam Cameron suffer and go 1-15, ride the McDaniel ship out to the very end and then cut him loose
If the owner had any backbone, he'd march in there and tell this team to forget the first 2-3 games, let's just move forward, let's try and right the ship by the time we hit the Bye week

-The play calling and all the passes behind the LOS are getting stale, no element of surprise and defenses are waiting for it

Their DT beat our backup RG right off the snap and was in Tua's face. He threw to a spot - on target - but didn’t see the LB. I wonder how Warner will break down the play. He has been critical of Tua and scheme.

BTW, at the time I thought MIA should've run it to give Allen no time for a comeback - and I would've gone for 2.

Firing the coach doesn't fix a bad organization.
The entire front office and scouting department needs to go as well. Been saying this for years and years.

That MVP talk about Tua was a joke.....two months vs some weak soft defenses save for a crazy comeback vs Baltimore. He has been a total bust and turd.

That 2020 draft has been an utter failure and if Ross wants to continue allowing this front office to burn draft capital year after year after year go right ahead....I don't support this team much at all since 2016. It's a dysfunctional joke of a franchise that ever since Ross bought the team....pissed on the tradition that made the Dolphins at one time one of the most respected teams in the league. Those days are so far gone.....I hardly remember it anymore.

And that goes for a lot of teams in this league.......competitive professional sports (NBA, NFL, MLB) have been turned on its head by outright greed and have been commoditized to the extreme that they forgot what the word "competitive" means anymore. Most do not care to "compete". All that is needed is to brainwash younger generations of fans into thinking it's all that to be "seen" at a game so they can post on social media and the "look at me" lemmings will keep the money train rolling. Sports are pure entertainment vs competitive battles. Yeah there are teams that still compete and the elite teams stand out more than ever because of how diluted leagues have become.

I mean that's where I am these days with professional sports save for the NHL who actually get it. But it will be a matter of time before that model completely infects Hockey as well as the old school dies off.

Sorry for this wonderful Monday morning post.......but the only pure sports I see are youth sports (pre high school)....non D1 college sports......High School sports has become infected in big municipalities wanting to win at all costs (thinking I am going pro or I want a huge NIL deal), D1 sports are dead as we used to know them. Even parents are learning how to destroy youth sports with the watering down of "travel" sports.

It's become an absolute mess.

But back to the Dolphins........until the entire building is burnt to the ground and totally rebuilt......nothing will ever change here in Miami Dolphins land. I don't expect Ross to do much of anything unless he sees mass season ticket cancellations......If Season Tickets are sold out.....he does not care.

And **** I have really gotten old now......I used to live and die with my teams....now? I could care less....it is so unimportant and a waste of energy.

Do I still watch?

Yes.....old habits die hard......and I do catch some great games here and there. But wow....it's nothing like it was....a shadow of itself.

Cowboys "fan" here, and agree with the "I don't really care anymore" part of your argument.

When I heard Jerry Jones this off-season saying that having the Cowboys be a soap opera was a good and important thing... that was it. I had stomached his ownership for a long time, but that was it.

I told my wife, no more Cowboys gear for Christmas or anything. I won't throw the stuff I have away, but when it wears out, it's gone... until he is dead or sells the team. So, until he's dead, I guess.

They win? Fine. They lose? Don't much care. The owner has a loser's mentality--it's all about clicks. Sounds about right.
