I think he ran mostly in the 70's.  He ran distances like the mile.  He was white, and I think he was American.

He had a fairly famous race where he made a large come back.

I looked him up and I think that may be him (the cap and era fits) but I don't see the race I am thinking of.

Wottle is the best guess so far even if it doesn't immediately scream "yes that is it" to me.

I am pretty sure, 90%, that the race I am thinking of was not an olympic event and may have been indoors.  Maybe soemthing I would have seen on Wide World of Sports as a kid
