Here's To You. Here's To Us. Please Be Cool. De-escalate, Rock On, America (1 Viewer)

Hi Folks,

I hope you can enjoy the day today. Regardless of who wins, and even with all the negatives, it's a pretty cool thing we get to do.

I also will ask one time here to please be cool to each other. Hopefully to people in your real life and especially to people here.

I know I'm likely naive but I continue to be optimistic. I continue to believe people are good.

I also want to be honest and say the moderators likely won't have much patience. There simply isn't time. We talked about closing the forum but then were worried political talk would spill over to the other forums. The better answer is likely just suspensions for people that clearly don't want to go along with what we're asking. And I get it, we're asking a lot relatively speaking. We're swimming against the current. I get it. But we'll try for a bit more.

I continue to believe we're all in this together. Even if we fight some on how best to get where we're going.

I'm asking you to please do your best to be thoughtful and empathetic and show grace to your neighbor. With the understanding we're all neighbors. (and neighbours, eh?) Please do your best to de-escalate threads, not escalate.

Rock on. Thanks for being a part of what we're trying to do here. Please bump this up if it gets too low on the page through the next couple of days. Much love for y'all.

Regardless of the outcome of the election I think we can all agree that it will be great to be rid of the nonstop political TV ads!!

We may not agree on how to get there but we're all Americans and want what's best for the country.   Let's hope that calm heads prevail no matter how long it takes and who is ultimately is declared the winner.

Cheers!

If Trump wins I will live my life the same as always and try to be a good person.  If Biden wins I will live my life as always and try to be a good person.

When the final results are in that is all we can do.

Very :goodposting:

Never been a better time to be alive and a better country to live in

Joe...can you promise we can watch a sporting event again without being told to vote?  Between Corona and political idiocy I just want the little things in life back....hopefully it starts tomorrow morning.

God bless America!  Still greatest country ever regardless of outcome tonight.  One presidential election can’t change that.

Yeah - but we still have to deal with Joe Namath pitching Medicare options.   Get rid of that and we can truly celebrate as a nation.

Are you pledging to not start anymore hot take topics (PA AG)?

kidding, don't ban me, I'm trying to make it through Election Day

:lmao:

Joe,

I don't envy you. Just trying to make a living, and doing so in a way that most of us envy. Followed your passion and it worked out.

But how much of your time and the moderators time is taken up by the PSF? Probably more than you want.

Just being honest here, if  I was in your shoes I would have 86ed it a long time. Thanks for being a more patient man than most.

I do feel that the exchange of ideas, the attempt at facilitating dialogue, is a vital service to the FBGs community. I am really grateful you have allowed it to continue. No doubt there have been a lot of days when you did want to do the easy thing and just lock down the PSF.

That would be the easiest solution. You chose a harder path. You have to be (or at least give the appearance of) impartial and fair to all viewpoints. That's the unenviable part.

Anyway, thanks man. Proud to call you my friend and really appreciate this platform.

Peace.

Thanks Buddy. I'm with you, I often wonder why we haven't 86'd it long ago. I was looking at competitor's site the other day and they have a big forum and it's almost all football. Little to know political. And it was beautiful.

On the flipside, I do know we've worked hard at this and the result has been a forum that many folks have said is better than most. Yes, it's painfully non diverse with 85% Anti Trump and not indicative of the country at large. But it's a mostly civil place. It requires a ton of work on moderation. But it's a place to talk about stuff that some appreciate.

Thank you for the kind words about trying to be impartial. That's been my goal. I have a pastor friend that says if you ever talk about politics, you know you did ok if everyone is unhappy with you. Probably some truth there. We'll keep trying. Rock on, Buddy.

They can take the Medicare ads with them.

Not sure if there was a line early...but about 9:45 when I walked by the polling place at a school near me, there was no line outside...decent amount of cars coming and going...but didn't look too bad.  I could have probably gotten in and out in 20 minutes had I not already voted.  I prefer early, especially in a year like this where I could have ended up sick or who knows what else could have popped up making it more difficult to vote (in March it was a tornado).

Yeah, not sure about earlier. I went at about 10:30 and there was just like 5 people in line ahead of me. That's about how it's been in previous years.

We had huge early voter turnout in Knoxville for weeks. Some places were 90 minute waits in early voting. I'm guessing that pulled a lot of the people out early.

Thought that in this area too.  Always lines for the early voting near here.  And definitely now more cars as I drove by as its the lunch crowd out voting and Id guess it will pick up around 3:30-4pm as well til the polls close.

Happy too see more people exercising their right to vote.

Hello, Joe, long time no see. I’m glad to see some things don’t change. I took off quite some time ago because of how snippy it was getting between all parties concerned. I don’t like the president (shocker!!!), but that has never extended to his voters for me; I don’t see evil on the other side of the aisle. My FIL is a Trump supporter, and he is a wonderful, generous guy. I’m just a political junkie who enjoyed the political talk here, and since good political conversation was getting pretty sparse, I decided to duck out until today. I’ve checked out the forums every once in a while, to catch up on some smart posters opinions, because the group here is pretty special amongst message board crews.

I’m back because of posts like this one. Thank you for caring about civility, even amongst those who see each other as “foes,” and thank you for having the patience to put up with us all. I’ll be back, and mostly lurking while posting here and there, as I do, and I will remember my manners, to treat everyone with respect, and to keep my shoes off of your table. Thanks, Joe.

Love this and dkp thread - I've done my share of irritating folks with my takes so let me apologize for that.  It's a great day because we get to vote and let our voices be heard.  Hopefully no matter the outcome we move forward together.

To quote Patrick Skinner, "We all matter, or none of us do"

My neighbors have a sign by their driveway that says: "Presidents are temporary, Wu-Tang is forever"

I've only met them a time or two, but they seem like fun people.

Mostly just a bump, but might as well comment on the bolded. It's great early voter turnout was up in every TN county, but Knoxville's early vote increase was noticeably less than all other major TN counties.

Percentage increase compared to 2016 for the most populous counties (counties with population > 200,000, ordered by population descending)

County         Population    Percent Change
Shelby          935,000         +35%
Davidson      700,000         +45%
Knox              474,000         +22%
Hamilton       370,000         +40%
Rutherford     341,000         +52%
Williamson     243,000         +46%
Montgomery  217,820         +37%
