Hey #### You, Toyota! (1 Viewer)

I've got an '07 Tacoma, great condition, low mileage. Take it in for emissions and it fails. The computer says a "knock sensor" died. I call a few places for quotes -- apparently the part itself is $250 and it requires 16+ hours of labor because they have to practically take the ####### engine apart to replace it, so like 2 grand total.

I love the truck but I work from home and maybe put 3,000 miles a year on it anymore, so the only logical thing to do is sell it and downgrade after taking the hit for this stupid ####### sensor. Really pissed. But, I'm thinking about maybe getting an old '70s Ford pickup that's been restored. I've seen some pretty badass ones around. The End

Also, I'm not happy that I had to read those four pound signs in your thread title and what they insinuate. That kind of language is unnacceptable on a fantasy footbal message board, so :reported:

Pretty much par for course for the newer cars. The more recent the more computer chips in them tucked away.

Maybe you can sell it to somebody who lives in a state without emissions tests. As long as it doesnt affect actual performance, the new owner might not care.

Two ideas come to mind....

Ive heard using premium gas helps.

I would explain this to the youngest and most likely to smoke dope at emissions. Tell him you'll give him $200 or an half ounce of weed.

See, now there's another private solution to a phony government problem. I love it!

I hate the thought of selling it privately, and random jerkoffs coming to my house with lowball offers, or not showing up at all, or not really having the money to buy it, etc. And the registration expires this month but we're on vacation the next two weeks, then having friends in town. So I'll probably end up getting gouged at a Carmax or similar just to get rid of it. ####### pain in the ###.

Ok, so from my experience, the only thing that sets a light for a knock sensor on toyotas is if a rat has gotten in there and chewed up the wires going to the sensors. Not 100% garunteed, but its is most likely the problem. Such being the case, go to your local dealer and purchase the small knock sensor harness that goes in the valley, should be fairly cheap. And why you are there, if you want, replace both sensors, but i would guess you shouldnt have to replace either one once you get in there and see what has happened.

There is a cheap workaround in the forums also. Most issues are with the harness. You can make a little pigtail to loop the "good" signal into the problem wire. Search around for it.

Of course, if you really do have knock issues, this will mask it.
ive a quick look at the thread "Clearing Codes to sell Car"...posted a few days ago. Might help and the Videos will give you an idea of what you will be getting into....it is do-able. If I can get my Ducks lined up I will be making a video on this soon...I have a few Avalons to repair with the same issue. Definitely use new gaskets...they are cheap and a leaking one will cause a too lean burn condition. Use a quality brand like Felpro or OEM. I bought a "head gasket kit" from Rock Auto that was on sale for less than the price of the individual gaskets needed...got lucky. The plugs can be changed without taking the plenum off, but it so easy when it is off that I do em anyway. Same with the rear rocker cover gasket. And IF you need to replace the rear bank A/F sensor (looks like an O2 sensor-but is not), now is the time!

Let's say you drive with an expired registration. You say you only drive 3000 miles a year.

Chances are, you don't get pulled over for a couple years.

What are the consequences? Small fine? Jail? Death by cop?

That's not how I live my life.

Gotcha. You'd rather take a $2000 hit on your truck. Fair enough.

Since you're the anti-gov't zealot here, I guess you're aware of those stationary cameras the cops use to scan license plates. With my luck I'll be pulled over within 3 months, probably during a thunderstorm taking my sick dog to the vet. Will the cop let me go on my merry way with expired registration, or have the truck impounded? I'm guessing the latter in Cobb County GA. So I'll be standing in the rain with my sick dog waiting for Uber and people will say "hey look at that scumbag with his sick dog getting his truck towed". And they'd be right because it's a scumbag move.

Did you not see my post above, but more specifically this one:

I'll have to find a mechanic willing to do this kind of work on the side. It's definitely not something I'm going to try to mess with.

He is purposely ignoring solutions. His real goal is prison sex. NTTATWWT. :coffee:

You see, this is an example of what my wife describes as the "American way"... You have to pay a lot of money, it takes a long time, and it's a big hassle. Over there you just pay someone to put the friggin' sticker on your car and you're all set.

I've decided to just leave the truck in a bad neighborhood with the windows down.

Man, I can see what people mean when they say "let me sleep on it". The solution just appears like magic!

Get it fixed before you make the climate change again!

Seriously, if it doesn't effect the way it drives nor harms another part of the car, let it be and tell the "man" to go F himself. These liberal tree huggers just love making hard working people spend money on pointless things.

2005 Toyota Siena: Got an error when turning on the cruise control. Turns out it was the laser guided proximity sensor that automatically slows you down if you get to close to the car in front... which I didn't use anyway. Cruise control won't work unless the laser system is fixed and its like $2000-$3000, so no more cruise control for us.

2005 Toyota Highlander: My A/C started blowing hot air only. Took to dealer and he said it was some climate controller box that needed to be replaced and was going to cost me just under $1000. Found on the internet that the problem may be caused by a poorly soldered wire that has a tendency to come loose. After taking apart the dash and soldering one wire on the panel (which they would not do for me) it was fixed.

We've had both cars for around 8 years and they're both around 100,000 with few issues but those are the dumb ones that stand out.

Only if you are dumb enough to run.
