Hoarding Defenses for the FF Playoffs (1 Viewer)

Is hoarding defenses a good strategy in preparation for the FF playoffs?

I am doing this now, but am not sure that these matchups mean as much as they have been billed. I don't own the Giants D, but I did notice that juicy matchup that they had against Dallas last week. It seemed like a great matchup anyway. But the guy that had him lost his FF matchup because of it.

Last week, I picked up Arizona for the stretch run, wouldn't have mattered if I had started my regular defense (Pittsburgh), who also laid an egg. I started Arizona and they ended up getting negative points. Cleveland would have got me 2 points. I now own 4 defenses in one league and 3 in another. There is a lot of talented players on the WW's but I'm biting my lip hanging on to the defenses.

Point is, there doesn't seem to any "weak sisters" to pick on anymore. FF playoffs are 5 and 6 weeks away. A lot changes. I am starting to question this old time tested strategy.

Carolina Panthers down? I actually think the Seahawks/Falcons/Cardinals would make a fantastic week 13, 14, 15 committee. It'd be nice to get the Steelers (Carolina's week 16 opponent) to complete the committee, but somehow I doubt they're freely available in most leagues.

I played Tampa Bay this last week against Carolina, and it was a ho hum 10 points. But Carolina always seems to play Tampa tough. Even Carolina isn't a sure a thing as they seem to be.

About Carolina:

- even though the TB game was not a huge points maker, my theory is that the main thing is to compete at DST in the final 3 weeks. You don't want to be outscored by your opponent by 20 points at the DST, or even 10. You don't want a zero or a negative. And you want at least a shot at a high score. I already have ARI & ATL (weeks 14-15 vs CAR) for this reason.

I don't have PIT (CAR, wk16) in any league and most people don't.

Does anyone have a good week 16 matchup? I can't figure that one out, there seem to be no great choices.

SEA seems good for weeks 13-14, not so much for weeks 15-16:

13 12/05/10 4:15pm CAR - - - - -

14 12/12/10 4:05pm @SF - - - - -

15 12/19/10 4:05pm ATL - - - - -

16 12/26/10 1:00pm @TB

This seems like a season of extreme parity; no team besides Carolina really seems down as an automatic likely good matchup for opposing DST's. Week 16 will be tough to figure out.

I think that is a horrible strategy. I don't know about you, but from week to week this year, there are defenses that score 20 points and then next week score negative points!!! There is really no predicting this year, so you are wasting your time.

Ive got miami clev atl dont know about week 16 no matchups that jump out besides pitt.

Teams that play car is a good strategy. Theres actually a really good post already on def

I like carryn two (50 % chance I get it right, who to start)

Is AZ out of playoff picture? I would consider scenarios like that (team gets to knock another out of the playoffs).

I would say flip a coin between starting Dal or AZ, but I would believe there might be a better option, considering playoff standings etc. ie. Cleveland playing a tough game against a visiting Baltimore?

This may be a good post to bring up near end of next Season if Coaches/Teams are matched up accordingly and feedback is provided sufficiently, regarding how the varied games play out...

I agree about the other post on defenses. There is some very good information there. I am not so much trying to discuss who the best defenses to hoard are. Moreso, my question is more a strategy question. What I am meant to ask is this:Is the tradeoff of other roster spots for defenses at the expense of quality depth worth it? If so, how many defenses are the limit, 3? 4? Please assume standard rosters for with not overly deep or shallow leagues. Also fair to assume that you have a solid starting lineup, and playoffs are assured. But at some point, you’d like to have other roster backups just in case. The second minor point is that lining up defenses against Carolina isn't necessarily a sure bet. A safe bet, maybe.

Im not so sure I agree, I would almost bet a pop that an Owner who started either Chi or TENN made 20 points each wk (just fyi I had a friend tell me that Miami only good for scoring 19 points, needless to say I should have started Chi) TENN earned me 7 points, while I believe Chi came up with like 24 on my bench...I imagine were talking different scoring, but just sayin two is better thn 1 (maybe 3 or 4)

Week 16 matchup?

paulbertini's awesome Defense Strategy thread points out that Arizona is the second best matchup for DEF's, and they host the Cowboys week 16. I've been holding the Cowboys D/ST through the pain, we'll find out soon enough if they've turned a corner and would be a good week 16 start. Have the Giants D - week 16 @ GB. Would start the Cowboys D if they're back to form.

Stashed the Cardinals D only for the week 15 start against Carolina.

Hoarding D's (for the playoffs) can be our friend!
