Holiday/Vacation day debacle - UPDATE - more of a communication debacle than anything (1 Viewer)

So you've had no paid vacation whatsoever in being there an entire year?

What's the policy on the other holiday's?  Were you paid for those?

I had two paid personal days (unofficial type thing) and earned 1 single paid vacation day.

We are paid for all of the major holidays; New Year's Day, Labor Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Thanksgiving (2 days!11), now Christmas (which used to be 2 days).  You know the standard 7 days.

IMO, it's impossible to impose or dictate a new office policy 2 weeks in advance of a holiday like christmas when people have to plan their vacation time far in advance. strike 1 against boss dude.
Sounds more like the policy was put in place prior to that but people were confused so he sent out his rationale.

Bass Pro Shops does sound pretty sweet. Maybe worth not getting the day off just for that.
This Christmas Party is a really good thing.  I really enjoyed it last year and did get a small bonus (I'm guessing it was pro-rated, but nothing was explained).

My boss' father was (is) a good man, but his body is breaking down.  He has Parkinson's and built the company from scratch into a multi-million dollar business with 20+ employees.  His 3 sons all work here and my boss is actually the middle one, but had the best head for business and is now the majority owner.  He just isn't all that great with people and doesn't do a lot of give and take.  He does a great job of protecting the company's interests in every transaction, but subcontractors and sometimes employees take the short end of the stick.

Holiday party... at Bass Pro Shops... does that sound odd to anyone else?

That's like throwing a birthday party at Bloomingdales, no?

And you're full time even with the flex schedule?  Why would anyone work there?

You think you've got it bad now, just wait until you're a minister.  They don't even get Christmas Day off!

I live in Springfield, MO which is their headquarters.  The store here is a tourist stop with a high end restaurant and couple of banquet areas.  It's actually a pretty nice place.  One of my friends had his wedding rehearsal dinner in the same banquet room.

No he doesn't.  If the employees get as unhappy as you sound the company will start circling the drain.

Well?  The suspense is killing me.  When's your day off and did you get a bonus?
Did get my direct deposit notice on the bonus already.  It is at the low end of the range I was expecting which isn't very encouraging.  Still no word on if I get Monday off or not.  I got a cool backpack as a gift at least.

Get three buddies to pose as the ghosts of Christmases past, present and future and have them punk your boss into giving Monday off.  It may take some expensive special effects and stalkerish research into your boss' life, but, if Hollywood and Dickens have taught us anything, it will be effective.

I think I'm the only one unhappy.  Everyone was either already here under the old guard and have built up vacation so they can take off a reasonable amount, are allowed to work 4 day work weeks (2 people) or work in a different department for the other partner who is used to working in an office and allows reasonable requests without making them wait all day for an answer.

I think they don't know what to do with me.  I'm overqualified and a male.  The only other guys here are either in the field, managers or in accounting.  I'm the only guy in this role and they treat me more like the guys in the field but without the flexibility and pay.

One thing is for sure, if I do stay around for very long, I will not hesitate to take sick days, even for mental health reasons.

Well, I finally just went and asked before I left.

"Oh yeah, I meant to tell you earlier. You're good."

Oh well, at least I'm off.

Merry Christmas, FFA!

All this for nothing?
No, I think I will still pursue that job I found online. I'm still pretty dissatisfied and he jerked me around until the 11th hour.

I'm feeling pretty dissatisfied and think you jerked us around until just now.  I'm pursuing another thread.

Well, I had a lovely day off.  It was needed.

Then today started.   Our office is under construction and they are breaking up the tile in the office near where I'm sitting.  I have had basically a mini jackhammer running all day about 20 feet from my desk with the only barrier being a plastic sheeting.  I can't hear or think and have gotten next to nothing done.

Boss is out until Friday.  I'm asking for a sit down meeting to discuss things that I'm frustrated with on that day with him and the other (more reasonable) owner.  Hoping it will be a positive thing.  I'll have to tread lightly as my boss does not take kindly to any kind of threats and I have nothing else lined up at the moment.  However, of the four people currently named to my position, one is pregnant, one is near retirement and one hasn't even started working yet.  I'm pretty sure they are counting on me being around this Spring.

:lmao:

You get what your want and still rolling your eyes.
I rolled my eyes at the "oh, yeah....I meant to tell you" part.  He was planning to give me the day off the whole day, but left me twisting in the wind.  Just another event in a growing trend of inconsiderate behavior.

1 vacation day after a year ?

seriously what is the vacation time earning process
It is 1 week after a year of service...or so I was told.  Apparently all vacation is accrued at January 1 for the year.  So I technically don't get the week until the January 1 AFTER my 1 year anniversary.  I apparently earned a single day based on a prorated time on 1/1/16, but didn't know it until about August of this year.

Communication is very poor around here and I suck at forcing the issue.  I'm going to have to get over myself and just ask for what I want and keep asking until I get an answer.

Or maybe just go somewhere else where these things are outlined and not being used to control you.

Typically, the company has a Christmas party the morning of Christmas Eve and then we get Christmas day off, so now instead of 2 days we get 1.
The problem starts here.

You get 1 day off, period, if the holiday is on a weekend this gets bumped to Monday, end of story.

So if you get hired on January 2 you have to wait 2 years before you accrue any vacation?

On the other hand, my company is so lax with their vacation policy that we had a temp (who started this August) take her 2nd week long vacation (which she hasn't accrued yet). I guess HR is allowing her to borrow against future vacation days.

So.....apparently I had 2 weeks vacation available after my anniversary date and nobody told me.  There is no vacation info on our paystubs, I wasn't told my accrual would occur and when I asked about how many vacation days I had, I was told 1.

But I just got paid out for 8 days of vacation.  I guess my 2 days off in the middle of the year was granted as vacation, then the one day for 12/26 leaving and after my single day accrual plus the 10 days after that I have 8 left (1-2+10-1 = 8).

So apparently, I'm a whiny #####, but my company does a really crappy job of communicating.  Merry Christmas, everyone!!!!
