Can you maybe make some little triangles and attach them to the top and sides of the car that maybe helps keep it from flipping. Just thinking out loud.

 
RC car didn’t work. It got about 1/3 of the way through and got hung up. When I backed it out, it got wedged in the pipe somehow. I had to push it free with the fish tape. 

Went with the ping pong ball and an electric blower for the 2nd try. Shot it in there and left it blowing for a while.  Nothing. Went to the bottom and ran the fish tape up from the bottom and as I was pulling it back out the ping pong ball wooshed by!  Got the tape out, pulled the fishing line through, tied it to the pulling line, and fished that back through!  Woo!

i haven’t run the wire yet, but it’s all set up now. Pipe was about 45’ long in total. I’ll tie up the wire and pull it through later. Hard part is done now. Thanks for all the tips guys. 

 
Side-note  - my 4 y/o LOVES the little car.  When I came down and told him it was stuck in the pipe he started crying because I had earlier told him he could have it when I was done.  For $11, it's pretty cool actually.  It was kind of funny when it was stuck though - I looked down the pipe, and 10' down and a little over all I could see was the red LED light flashing.  Looked like a disco in the pipe.

 
Several ceramic floor tiles have developed cracks and the corners have become dislodged.  I want to replace the tiles, but i have to remove the mastic underneath.  What's an easy/effective method to do that?

Are you sure it is okay to run the cat6 through the pipe?  I heard that is not safe sometimes or if the job has to pass inspection.

I've googled the heck out of it before I started this project and haven't found conclusive answers.  The way I see it:

1) I'm using plenum rated cable, which can be run inside your HVAC returns per code.  It's designed to not smoke and burn were it to somehow short circuit.  Obviously being in an air duct space, that would be really bad.  Couple that with the really low chance of properly-used Ethernet having enough voltage running through it to even short and start a fire in the first place, and I'm not that worried.

2) This is a second unused radon mitigation pipe.  I have another active one with a fan on it.  House had no issues with Radon when we bought it.  

3) Even if that pipe was passively venting, once I run the wire up, I seal the pipe back up with silicon, so the pipe is again functional as a passive vent pipe.  The only drawback I see is that there's a little less usable diameter in the pipe.

4) Re. inspection - the entry and exit points for the wire are in such obscure spaces, and will be nearly fully covered with insulation once I'm finished.  The odds of anyone seeing the exit point and even realizing it's a pipe are slim to none.  We're not planning on moving for a long long while.  If somebody has issues, I'll simply cut the line, yank it out, and seal up the pipe and the eventual new owner won't have 3rd floor internet.

And keep in mind part of this is to use HDMI baluns for whole-home HDMI/video distribution and also one for a USB balun for video game controllers.  :D

...and I like to over-complicate things.

 
Working on taking the ceilings out of kitchen and bathroom in our rental they're quite low 6'6".

Gonna raise them to 10 ft like the rest of the house.

 
90% of my attic work is done, at the 16 Mos mark of Saturdays and Sundays just been a one man band doing it all myself.. insulation, sub floor, electric, framing, sheetrock and spackling...  hoping to paint in a month.. making this finished space into a record room, so it's been a labor of love... almost there!

you are one of my favorite brohans and you post a lot in one of my favorite ffa threads and so i mean this with all due respect and without trying to get you mad but i was secretly hoping that this would end up being one of those things where you keep throwing stuff up in a tree to get a frisbee down and it all gets stuck in the tree and that it would eventually become a question about how to get the fish tape that is stuck to a pingpong ball that is wedged in by a rc car and a carrot that your kid threw in there out of your radon system take that to the bank bromigo

brohan do you have the overhead space to make that happen above the drop ceiling and second if you do why in the hell did anyone drop the ceiling down 3 and a half feet that is just nuts take that to the bank brohan

gotta agree with bromingo...  something not right here

If a contractor made a 6'6" finished ceiling with 10' available, you got more issues than a ceiling.

New roof in the next few months.  Anything to look out for with roofers? Maybe I should ask if there is anything positive to look out for?  :lol:

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:   I definitely had a mental flash-forward to 30 years from now when somebody else owns our house and they were tearing that wall down to build an addition or something and a contractor was like, "Why is there an old toy car, a ping pong ball, and a bunch of fishing line in this pipe?"

the guy was probably so mad he just f it we will lower the ceiling to half the hight and no one will ever think about what lies in that pipe ever again and then bam when you open it a horror movie happens but it is a really dumb horror movie because the bad guy is the ghost of a ping pong ball and all that it can do is mildly annoy you when it flies in to you because hey it is just a stupid ping pong ball who cares but it would still be better than how stella got her groove back take that to the bank brohans

It's a 90 year old house with several additions.  So when ever they put a new roof on they built it over the old one.  The whole house is a clusterduck.

No treasure just a bunch of wrapping paper with name tags on it.  Although onlt 1/2 way done, still hoping.

holy smokes bromigo so what does the new roof bear on top of i would make sure its on the walls and that they are appropriately carrying loads down to the foundation before i went tearing through the layers that is not something to mess around with that is all i am sayin and be safe as you look for treasures take that to the bank

1. The previous homeowner did probably one of the worst jobs ever of laying the floor. He may have single-handedly shown me I shouldn't DIY the floors. The wood (I'm sure it's laminate or something) is noticeably separating all over the house. I guess I'm thankful he didn't fix it before selling. It's also scuffed up in a few places, so I'm just going to totally re-do it.

What's the shark move for flooring? I don't hate the wood-look tile that I saw in a couple houses I looked at, but I don't know if that's the best way to go.

This sounds like the house I bought in October. The laminate floors are terrible throughout the house. There are noticable gaps around corners/baseboards in every room, the kitchen island, etc...in one hallway I can slide some of the pieces about a half inch back and forth, the threshold in between the living room and dining room wasn't tacked down properly and I've tripped over it a few times...I swear the guy either did it himself while pounding beers and bonghits or he hired a crew of with Parkinson's from Craigslist to do it. It's beyond ridiculous. 

We are going with porcelain tile in the living room and dining room (the kind that has the wood look), and ceramic tile in the kitchen. It's gonna be costly but itll be awesome when it's done. That's the biggest project on our list, so we will probably have to wait til next year to have it done.

I had my roof done 2 years ago. I think if I was young enough to know I would need to get another one 20-30 years from then, I would have looked into one of these corrugated metal roofs. 

 
Hey Good Buddy’s! How do I handle this one? 

Selling my house. Built in 1969. My realtor said that my bathroom fan will most likely get dinged by the inspector because it vents right into the attic, which I guess was a common practice then? 

I’m putting a new fan in anyways, so I figured I will run the exhaust outside.

Question is, where? It seems it would be easier to run it out the wall like a dryer vent versus the ceiling/roof.

1. Any problem with that? 

2. My exterior siding is Stucco. Does that change any opinion? Not sure how hard it is to cut through stucco.

OR..... what’s the likelihood of the inspector getting up into the attic and checking out the fan?

I've seen folks with problematic venting like yours run a vent hose through the attic, then out of the soffit. Have no idea how that method holds up under inspection these days

I was literally looking at this same option on youtube video's yesterday. The consensus seemed to be that running it out the soffit was a bad idea as hot, moist air would go out the soffit and the basically right back in through the soffit (basically venting right back into the attic).  The videos for venting through the roof made it look fairly straight-forward, so I'd go that route (rather than out a wall).

If there is already an existing vent that goes to your roof, i would patch into that exhaust.   Here is a good video of what not to do and do.https://youtu.be/PqrZWd_CQIE

Yeah, I know it's inefficient. I wouldn't do it, but it may be a patch solution for someone trying to get out fast if it's not against code.

When I bought the house I'm in now, the inspector noticed the water was draining slowly in the sinks and tubs. He went on the roof and the cap was still on the vent 😄

 
Sorry if Honda, but does anyone have experience with artificial grass? I have a front lawn that is patchy and brown/dead. I could resod it but am considering long-ish artificial grass to save on maintenance and water.

I think about how hot artificial turf was back in my college football days, and can't imagine using that for my lawn.

I have artificial grass in my basement and its quite cool because of the cement.

I buy that. But EYLive was talking about using it as his front lawn, which I presume will be exposed to the sun. If the goal is to be able to use / play on the lawn, I wouldn't recommend it as the turf has got to be at least 15-20 degrees hotter than the air temp. But then again, maybe he's in AZ or doesn't have kids or has some other factor, in which case it might be a really good idea.

I agree with you.  Mainly just saying works good in my basement.

Well it would be grass not turf. We wouldn't play on it, it's just for cosmetics. I considered a rock garden but it looks too uninviting.
