Homers (1 Viewer)

Thought it would be interesting to see who homers think their team's offensive mvp, defensive mvp, and most improved player and biggest disappointment are so far.

For my Bears it is pretty obvious.

OFF MVP: Rex Grossman - I knew the talent was there and I expect a couple more Minnesota style games but he has been very impressive.

DEF MVP: Tommy Harris - Dominating. The best defensive player in the league so far.

Most Improved: Tommy Harris is lightyears ahead of his play from last year but the choice for me here is between Bernard Berrian and Desmond Clark.

Biggest disappointment: Not much to pick from here but the running game and specifically Thomas Jones is my pick. I suspect other Bears homers will disagree. I just see too many plays where he could have gained yardage and chose another route netting no yards. This isn't a calling for Benson who has not done enough to show he would be an improvement.

Offensive MVP: Larry Johnson - the horse that carries us.

Defensive MVP: Derrick Johnson - it was hard to not give this to either Tamba Hali or Jared Allen because both have been very valuable in getting pressure off the edge, but ultimately Derrick Johnson has simply been a beast who covers the entire field. He covers, he blitzes and boy does he tackle.

Most Improved Player: Sammy Knight - I couldn't stand this guy last season and was the driver of the "Replace Sammy Knight" bandwagon. But he's been a very solid safety for the Chiefs this season. He's made plays in the running game, he's covered which was a big weakness last season and he's made plays on the blitz. He struggled at times in the Bengals game and I thought, "oh no, here we go again", but his play rapidly improved to a point where I'm now content with him until he proves me wrong. Other candidates would include Derrick Johnson (absolute beast) and Greg Wesley (very similar to Knight except he was slightly better last season and slightly worse this season so he hasn't improved as much).

Most Disappointing Player: Brian Waters - the guy was simply dominant from 2003-2005, but is not blowing people off the ball this year. He's still playing solid football, but not at the level he is capable of. Guys like Will Shields, Casey Wiegmann and Kendrell Bell could all play better but I expected less out of them.

Redskins

Offensive MVP: Clinton Portis. 0-2 without him or partially with him and 2-0 with him as the starter. Santana Moss has a slight argument, but the offense begins and ends with Portis.

Defensive MVP: Sean Taylor. Nobody has done anything really special yet. I'll take Taylor because he's continued to do well despite having a tough job back there trying to cover for Shawn Springs' absence. Also, he's taken a leadership role on the field and calling out some stuff before the snap.

Most improved: Derrick Dockery. It's taken some time, but Dock is finally reaching his potential. He's being used more and more out in space and has held his own in pass protection against some solid DTs.

Most disappointing: Carlos Rogers. With Springs out, it was really important that Rogers step up. He really hasn't yet. He's matched up against some good receivers and hasn't handled it well, IMO. He's still a solid tackler, but I was really hoping he'd take a larger step up in year two.

I'm not a Jets or Giants homer but I root for both. So I'll try this.

GIANTS

Offensive MVP - this is a tough one so I'll go with Amani Toomer based off of his ridiculous Philly game. Eli has been up and down again and Tiki hasn't gotten untracked yet.

Defensive MVP - not much to see here at this point. Strahan and Osi have 1 sack between them and Arrington hasn't had any impact. Antonio Pierce by default, though he's a good LB.

Most Improved - Brandon Jacobs looks like he's ready to be a beast with extra time.

Most Disappointing - Arrington and Sam Madison who's cover skills seem to have eroded.

JETS

Offensive MVP - Chad Pennington. Gotta give the guy credit after battling back from some serious surgeries. His arm strength will never be....ummm...a strength but he knows his abilities and maximizes them.

Defensive MVP - Kerry Rhodes. He was mentioned as a "guy to watch" during the preseason and he hasn't disappointed. 30 tackles, 3 sacks, 1 pick and 3 forced fumbles!

Most Improved - Rhodes or Jerricho Cotchery. With Jerricho, the added playing time gave him a chance to show what he can do, as well as the return of Pennington.

Most Disappointing - Dewayne Robertson. Maybe the defense doesn't fit him. Who knows? All I know is that they spent the #4 pick in the draft on him and it's not paying off.

J-E-T-S....Jets Jets JETS!

Offense: Tough choice because Laverneaus has been stellar as a comeback player this year. But even moreso is the play of Chad. He's been virtually mistake free. Finally gave up a pick in the red-zone last week...first time EVER. But he's healthy, making good decisions, and being a leader on a surprisingly (well, not that surprisingly) good team. Fans of the team knew the defense would be solid.

Defense: Vilma is the easy choice, but I'm going a different route here. Kerry Rhodes has been a moster at Strong Safety. He's all over the field making plays and getting to the QB when they blitz him. This guy will be around for a long long time. He's only going to get better and that's scary. What's best is that he makes BIG plays that spark the entire team. You need guys like this on your team to pick you up.

:goodposting: You beat me to it. Good stuff. :banned:

Agreed - I think you nailed them for the Jets. I wouldn't view Rhodes as most improved though, as he was coming on last year. Cotchery IMO is the clear choice, although we never really got a chance to see him much with Herm.

Bills

Off: JP Losman

Def: London Fletcher

Most Improved: Willis McGahee  (He has actually looked like a top RB this year, finally.)

Most Disappointing: Brian Moorman (He'll get it together, but he's had a couple average punts already.)

Jaguars:

Defense: Rashean Mathis- 4 picks and excellent run support for a CB. There's not a CB in the league I'd rather have right now.

Offense: I would have said Khalif Barnes before last week. He had played extremely well against some very good DE/OLBs in the first three weeks(Ellis, Porter, Freeney, Mathis). But he didn't look good at all last sunday. Leftwich also has played 3 good games, but just plain looked awful in the colts game. So I'll go with Reggie Williams. The guy is making the tough cacthes, running after contant and continues to be an excellent run blocking WR.

Colts homer here. Here goes:

Offensive MVP- Peyton Manning. As he goes, so go the Colts

Defensive MVP- Probably noone, however I'll go with Jason David. Without him, the Jets mighta scored on the Big Apple Miracle play.

Most Improved- Joseph Addai He has come a long way in this complex offense.

Most Disappointing- Probably Corey Simon, due to injury/illness

Ravens

OMVP: McNair - he'd win a team vote 53-0 (even Boller would say "aye" I think)

DMVP: Lewis would win this if there was a vote, methinks, though Scott's been slightly better.

Most improved: Bart Scott. Although he was hell filling in for Ray last year, I think his name hasn't really gotten out until now.

Most disappointing: I guess Jamal Lewis

Redskins

:goodposting: Agreed.

Vikings

OMVP: :tumbleweed:

DMVP: Antoine Winfield. One of the best tacklers in the league, period.

Most improved: The linebacking corps

Most disappointing: Offensive line

A team completely devoid of star power.

LOD: Right now, it's Eli Manning, followed closely by Andre Johnson. :lmao:

RavensO-MVP - Couldn't be anyone other than Steve McNair.

D-MVP - I think Bart Scott would win a team vote, a coaches vote, and a "whoever's actually been paying attention" vote. Adalius Thomas would probably come in second right now. Lewis might win the general fandom vote, but that's about it. It's amazing that Reed hardly gets mentioned (And he'd leave a huge hole if he were not out there), but the LBs are killing it right now.

Most Improved: I agree with you. Scott should win this, despite what he showed last year. Getting him resigned for 3 years $13m was an absolute steal.

Disappointing: Jamal Lewis is tempting, but he hasn't done much worse than I expected given the conditions. I'd say probably Keydrick Vincent. I shouldn't have expected much more after last year, but I did, and he hasn't brought it. I think the line's problems are more the issue than Jamal himself.

Edit to add: Kyle Boller may get votes for most improved by not being on the field. That's the best improvement so far ;)

Cardinals

The Offensive MVP-- everything on that side of the ball has been OFFENSIVE to card fans with nothing being MVP like

Defensive MVP- A. Wlson. The rest of the NFL will get to know him as each week goes on. Dallas and Washington have marquee safteys, but#24 will make his way to Hawaii real soon.

Most improved- Got to give it the Stadium. Much more comfortable seats and temp.

Most disappointing- Running game. I put the o-line and EDGE together on this. If you are a top 5 RB in the league you bring up the play of those around you. For all of you who drafted Rackers in the 7th or 8th round, well thats sort of disapointing as well!

I've been a Lions fan my whole life, but am local to Nashville right now.

TITANS

OMVP: :bag: Drew Bennett I guess, or Bo Scaife, but nobody deserves any recognition here.

DMVP: Chris Hope makes a strong case on stats, but this is Keith Bulluck's team.

Most improved: Scaife

Most disapointing: Haynesworth I guess. Or Troupe. Fact is nobody expected much from these guys and the staff has not helped matters.

LIONS

OMVP: Roy or Jeff Backus

DMVP: Shaun Rogers

Most improved: Mike Furrey? Could be Roy

Most disapointing: The team as a whole, especially after playing well against Seattle.

VikingsOMVP: :tumbleweed:DMVP: Antoine Winfield. One of the best tacklers in the league, period. Most improved: The linebacking corpsMost disappointing: Offensive lineA team completely devoid of star power.
OMVP: Ryan Longwell (highest QB rating possible, had all the points in win over CAR)Most disappointing: Koren Robinson (was supposed to be Vikes' #1 WR this year)

O - DMacD - Dawkins
On offense how can you not agree with McNabb. He may be the MVP of the league at this point.I also can agree with Dawkins but might give a slight edge to Darren Howard. Can we say that the whole D-line is the MVP?

Panthers:

O MVP - Smith - 0-2 without him. 2-0 with him. Enough said.

D MVP - Peppers - guy has been a beast so far. 5 sacks. 2 blocked FGs.

Most improved - Damione Lewis. Thought he was a bust before they signed him. He's been a nice fill in on the line.

Disappointment - Morgan. Just can't stay on the field. Should've kept 'Spoon.

Bucs:

Offensive MVP: um... N/A

Defensive MVP: Derrick Brooks and Ronde Barber (tackling machines)

Biggest disappointment: Coach Gruden

Houston Texans

OFF MVP: Andre Johnson. He's finally got the pressure taken off of him by the additional of Eric Moulds on the other side. When Carr has set his feet and looked Johnson's way, he's been catching it and providing the spark we've been missing for a while.

DEF MVP: Dunta Robinson. Until someone else steps up on the defense, he's the one who's playing best out there.

Most Improved: David Carr. He's looked a lot better, but he still needs to work on his timing of decisiveness. When he's on, he's on. When he's indecisive he's taking too many sacks and forcing things horribly.

Biggest disappointment: OL. Even with the additions of Flanagan and the draft picks the line has once again underperformed. Some blame still belongs to David Carr and his indecisiveness, but in some games they've been flat out bad. Also the running game has been able to perform well in past years even when the pass protection was bad, but this year 60 yards rushing for one rusher seems to be on the high end.

Redskins

Offensive MVP: Clinton Portis. 0-2 without him or partially with him and 2-0 with him as the starter. Santana Moss has a slight argument, but the offense begins and ends with Portis.

I agree with everything you said, except for Most Disappointing. Rogers hasn't been great, but I don't think he's been as bad as Archuleta and Andre Carter. I say those two share the award. If I had to give it to one guy, it would be Carter, he's done nothing.

Good points. I guess most of my disappointment with Rogers is because of what I hoped he'd be doing, not necessarily what I expected him to do.

Patriots:

Offensive MVP: Laurence Moroney. If he keeps running like this they wont need any WR's

Defensive MVP: Rodney Harrison. He hasn't had huge #'s but his leadership is huge. With him out last year the secondary got lit up.

Most improved: Jarvis Green (DL). Other than the Broncos, there has been no running vs. the Pats.

Biggest Disapointment: Chad Jackson WR ®. He was suposed to step in and fill the shoes of the departed WR David Givens (TEN).

So far he has missed most of training camp and most of the reg. season due to a hammy.

All in all I think it will only get better for the Pats as the WR's begin to get with the program.

They might loose 3-4 more and finish 11-5 or so.

Lions

Offense: Kevin Jones/Kitna in a tie. Both have been very efficient and made the most out of the little that is around them.

Defense: Shaun Rogers by default. He has shut down the run, but the Lions can't rush the passer and can't cover anybody.

Houston Texans

OFF MVP: Andre Johnson. He's finally got the pressure taken off of him by the additional of Eric Moulds on the other side. When Carr has set his feet and looked Johnson's way, he's been catching it and providing the spark we've been missing for a while.

Off MVP: Andre Johnson. Is the only true elite talent on the team and even with concentration lapses is catching like 75% of the targets to him. Without that production the Texans offense would horrible.Def MVP: DeMeco Ryans. Robinson is close in my mind, but has been a pleasant surprise.

Most Improved: Johnson followed closely by Carr. I think Johnson is making Carr look good more than the other, but the team is managing to do something on offense despite the OL not being any better and running game worse.

Disappointment: Defensive line play. The Texans have 3 1st rounders on the DL and have invested good money on Weaver, smith (cut) and Payne only to get a line that does not put consistent pressure on the QB and is below average against the run.
