Hot takes (no sports or politics) (3 Viewers)

I don't think we have a thread like this already

Please avoid politics for obvious reasons

Also avoid sports, since EVERY sports thread ends up as a hot takes thread

There's plenty of other stuff that we can disagree about and plenty of other areas where we can offend each other with our opinions

It's reasonable to believe that working in-office is more productive than working remotely. It's also reasonable to stay off-camera on Zoom calls. But if you think in-office is better AND you frequently stay off-camera on calls, then you're not just part of the problem...you ARE the problem. You wouldn't hide behind a barrier for in-office meetings, so you shouldn't do it for video calls either. Doing so is just sabotaging the quality of communication and relationship building that's possible on calls.

SportsCenter is still good TV the day after football.

Regarding medical research, people with a terminal disease should be allowed to opt into utilizing experimental options. It should also be free. Not covered, just offered for free.

Along similar lines, specifically health, monitoring technologies should be free to those that want it (like the Oura ring, watch, etc). But if you get it free you cannot opt out of sharing that data with medical researchers.

Paying for staple foods is bonkers. Everyone should get a portion of flour, rice, beans, milk, frozen vegetable for free every week/month. Want other foods, you still pay, but simple staples, free.

There should be a personal wealth cap that increases with inflation. $500 million to start seems reasonable. Is this mandated redistribution of wealth? Hell yes it is.

The rail system should be nationalized, repaired and expanded. It would provide a cheap and safe alternative to truck transport of goods. Also, for mass transit.

I would never win if I ran for office.

In Russia you would.

I like this one because travel is a pain for me. Long drives have never been my thing and airplanes/airports are a total mess these days.

Strawberry shortcake is an abomination. Strawberries are good. Cake with whipped cream on it is delicious. They should never be brought together, though. The whole is much worse than any of its parts.

WIthout getting into the realm of the forbidden, have beans and rice really gone up that much?
(I detest milk and don't bake, so I wouldn't know about those).

But I eat a ton of rice and beans.

12 lb bag of pintos is still $10 at Sam's.
20 lb bag of basmati rice is $18. Jasmine a little cheaper. And if you're going so slum it with gringo white rice, that's a 50 lb bag for $24.

I mean this across political lines, the affordability problems most Americans face with food has nothing to do with the cost of rice and beans.

The affordability problem is that people aren't eating enough rice and beans.

My hot take is a personal one: I need to treat caffeinated drinks after 10 PM like Mormons treat brewed beverages. They’re just awful for me and I stay up all night.
10? You must be young. Wait until anything caffeinated after 5 keeps you up all night.
I've been at 2 PM since my 20s.
3 pm is my cutoff. After that I switch to meth or what i call "crank".
I heard of a guy named Jesse that has this blue colored stuff that is super good. Said his high school chemistry teacher taught him how to make it. But that sounds a bit far fetched to me.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. I had a rice and bean burrito yesterday, $23 delivered by Uber Eats from Chipotle. I don't know how they expect us to live like this.

Jaywalking should go back to being an enforceable crime. Cross the street at crosswalks. Traffic is bad enough. I dont think it's safe making cars stop in the middle of a road where there is no stoplight or crosswalk.

For 30 years I thought caffeine just didn’t affect me and my sleeping - I could down a soda and then roll over and go to sleep. In the last two years I’ve been told I most likely have ADHD and some people with ADHD don’t have problems with caffeine and sleep - for some it has the opposite effect.

The left lane is for passing, the right lane is for travel. If you ain’t passing you’re traveling and you should move over. We're living in a society here...
💯
And if the left lane is open for passing don't tailgate the guy in the right lane because he's not going fast enough for you.
