I could see Lundi getting some action, Kubiak is known for taking no named RBs and making them great

Gary Kubiak has a knack for turning relatively unheard of running backs into perennial 1,000-yard rushers.

While University of Virginia running backs Wali Lundy may not be unheard of – at least not in the ACC – Kubiak thinks he has what it takes to gain some national recognition.

“I hope he comes in here and has an impact,” Kubiak said of the Texans’ sixth-round pick. “He’s been an overachiever his whole life, and I’m sure he’ll continue to do that.”

Lundy is one of the top all-around running backs in Virginia school history. He played 49 games, the most for a UVA running back, rushed for at least 800 yards in each of his first three seasons and set a school and ACC record with 52 career touchdowns.

A left ankle sprain suffered early this past season hampered his play early on in 2005, but Lundy – selected as one of three team captains – rebounded to lead the team in rushing with 574 yards and 10 scores. He had enjoyed a career-best season the year before, when he finished with 175 carries for 864 yards (4.9 yards per carry) and 17 touchdowns as a junior.

Kubiak thinks if Lundy had declared for the draft that year – when he led the ACC in total touchdowns and rushing scores (17) – he would have been selected much higher than he was Sunday afternoon with the 170 th overall pick. But nobody’s complaining. Kubiak likes Lundy’s size (5-11, 215) and toughness, and thinks he’ll find himself right at home in Houston.

“What he does best as a player is that he’s a zone runner,” Kubiak said. “He fits our scheme perfectly. He’s a sharp young man and I think what we do offensively is just going to help his career as a pro.”

The Texans selected wide receiver David Anderson from Colorado State University with their seventh-round pick (251 st overall). Having spent well over a decade in Denver, Kubiak often watched Anderson play all the time in college and was very impressed with what he saw. Kubiak’s son, Klint, will be a sophomore defensive back at Colorado State next year.

A semifinalist for the 2004 Biletnikoff Award, given to the best receiver in college football, Anderson holds school career records with 200 receptions for 3,330 yards and also 15 100-yard receiving games, which broke the old school record (13) dating back to the early 1970s.

“This guy is a battler,” Kubiak said. “He was one of the most productive receivers in his conference for many years. I just think he’ll bring an attitude to our team – I know he’ll be a great special teams player. And when you have your fourth, fifth, sixth receiver on your team, they have to help you in that category."

As far as the team’ entire draft class, Kubiak is ecstatic.

“All in all, I think all of our draft choices have a chance to make an immediate impact,” Kubiak said. “I know that’s putting a lot of pressure on them, but that’s why we picked them. We need this football team to get better. Fast. And I think those guys can help us do it quicker and better than anybody.”

What round was Morency taken last year? What makes this guy think Lundy is better than Morency?

Aren't the Texans trying to trade for Michael Bennett? Thus Lundy will not even make the roster. They will have four rbs. and Lundy would make 5 so he would be the odd man out.

Think it is a big leap to assume that A. Smith is a lock to make the roster, especially if they trade for Bennet. My thought is the Texans did not want to go into the season w/Dom Davis and a bunch of guys who have about 50 career carries combined (at least w/o these guys proving they can beat out a veteran).

Gotta love the post draft rookie RB hype.Last year it was Shelton in Carolina. There must have been 20 threads on various sites stating how he was the next Stephen Davis

I definitely don't buy the DD = stud talk, so I won't be the least bit surprised when he's eventually supplanted. He dodged the Bush bullet, but I think it's just a matter of time before a better back comes along.

Is Lundy that back? Probably not. He wasn't particularly dominant in college and his pedigree is mediocre. Nevertheless, he does fit Kubiak's scheme and he is a similar player to Mike Anderson and Olandis Gary. He could eventually surprise, although the team's continued interest in veteran RBs doesn't bode well for him (or DD or Morency).

Wali Lundy actaully had a nice career in the ACC.

He averaged over 4.5 yards per carry and

scored 43 TDs for the Cavaliers.

Morency taken w/ old coaching staff.Lundy taken by new coaching staff!

They liked what they saw in Lundy and I guessing by saying that Morency must not of impressed this new caoching staff last year or when he was in college. Nothing proven, but that COULD be why they think Lundy is better.

Here's the full excerpt from Manfull's article:

Wali Lundy• Position: Running back.• Round/pick: 6/170.• College: Virginia.• Ht./wt.: 5-10/214.• College highlights: One of the three players in ACC history to account for 50 touchdowns in a career. Rushed for a career-low 574 yards and 10 touchdowns during a senior year in which he was hampered by an ankle sprain.• Role with Texans: Will add to the depth at running back. With Domanick Davis often struggling with injuries, Vernand Morency and Lundy could see significant playing time next year.• Quotable: "I feel like I do everything well. I can catch the ball well, and I can run inside. I can get outside on the corner, and a lot of people don't realize it. I feel like I do everything well, and that is what I am going to add to the team."— Wali Lundy
And, for the record, Lundy is more injury-prone than DD.

That's wierd another year and another who will DD be replaced by thread. The answer below...

no one.

I don't think the old staff/new stafff stigma applies with Morency. I read not long ago that last year Shanahan (and Kubiak) scouted Morency carefully and were very pleased with what they saw. Morency was a known quantity, and apparently one Kubiak likes, when he took the job in Houston. I'll look for the link.

Glad this was brought up.Morency was at OSU behind T. Bell. Given the fact the Broncos scouted and drafted Bell, trust they did in fact get a L-O-N-G look at Morency on tape. He is not an unknown to the new coaching staff. More importantly, Morency is every bit, if not better, than Bell. Morency is about to be playing in the same one-cut blocking scheme that Bell has seen the past couple seasons. Morency is also behind a good yet usually injured player in Davis.

As far as this report by M. Manfull and every other rookie or mini-camp report by every other beat writer this time of year on every other player drafted, take it with a LARGE grain of salt. No team reporter is going to write anything more than a winning of hearts and mind story about any of their hometown team's draft picks a month after the draft. Everything...EVERYTHING...written is going to feel good, look good and read even better. Reports to the contrary are not going to surface until late August in regards to the rookie players.

Likewise, no coach is going to mention a negative word on any of his newest draft picks through the press one month after the draft. All the language will be positive and generic. The coach might take jabs at veterans dogging "voluntary workouts" but he is not going to hammer a rookie through the press. The same holds true in this instance. The coach is not going to give any bad reports, if any, until late August.

Right now W. Lundy is going to get as much fawning and pawing in the press as any other rookie on the Texans or any other rookie on any other team. Drafted in the first or drafted in the sixth it does not matter in May. Each player will be covered with a nice human interest piece and each player will be presented in a positive light by both the writer and team.

bottom line is as a DD owner make sure you own morency. personally i own both and most likely will be adding lundy in my rookie draft.

Had a flashback of how I traded M Jones Drew for this guy. What happened to him?
Talk about names you haven't heard for years and years. Thought he died or something.

guys I'm moving on to Kevin Barlow
I'll see your Barlow and raise you an Amos Zereoue.

Would be a fun offseason thread discussing names from yesteryear.

Samkon Gado is now an ENT doctor in Virginia, my BIL has gone to him

From what I remember of him, last thing I would want is him grabbing my throat.

Justin Forsett
This guy gives me painful memories. One of the worst owners in my league lucked out and picked up Forsett in waivers after his big week 1 - then rode him to a championship.
Was Olandis Gary a Kubiak back? I can't remember.
I think so - there were so many back then. Even Ron Dayne had big success there.
Oh man - I rostered Dayne in a couple redraft leagues. Totally forgot about that dude.

I think even the University of Wisconsin did as well after he flamed out in the NFL.
