I thought it was a good start. Went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised.

I’m in but when the season previews show a Targaryen speak of the Prince Who Was Promised all I can think of is “I don’t want it”. Biggest miss of the GOT universe. Might have been cliche but if you sell a Prince That Was Promised for 8 seasons, deliver one.

I think if you’re hoping for GOT season 1-4, you’re going to be very disappointed. I’m just hoping for something in between 1-4 and the last couple seasons of GOT.

Not sure how the show is doing it as I haven't watched yet, but both were the old king's grandchildren in the book. Rhaenys was the daughter of the old king's eldest son. Viserys was the son of a younger son. So Rhaenys & Viserys are 1st cousins. When the oldest son (the crown prince) died, the younger son then became the crown prince and heir. The younger son also died while the old king was still alive. So, the eldest line's heir was female (Rhaenys) and the younger line had Viserys. They held a council to vote, since a woman had never been ruling queen, and voted in Viserys.

I’ll add it for him. I enjoyed it and will watch how many ever seasons there are (assuming it doesn’t go TWD), but my main concern based on the previews was not having the huge breadth. LOTR was great for characters but also world building. GOT was the same way. One minute at the wall, the next Kings Landing and tons of other spots. My concern is if this is all Kings Landing and surrounding areas. We clearly won’t be interacting with Dothraki or White Walkers and others.
It was good, but not edge of my seat stuff. The Dornish knight beating Daemon was obvious and I’m assuming Lord Velayron (I’m sure that’s wrong) is likely to be our Littlefinger/Varys.
I agree. I understand as well the start of the talking about the secret of the winter is coming for the end of man, but we are so far in the past that I hope they don’t dwell on it. This reminds me of Rogue One, which I loved, where you already know the ending even if you didn’t read the books. The White Walkers didn’t even make a peep until a few years before GOT started with Benjen and even then no one knew until Ned beheaded the watchman at the start. Rogue One literally ended at the start of Star Wars so talking about the Death Star made perfect sense. Hopefully, we don’t spend a lot of time on things we know won’t have any possible happenings in this show just to tie in GOT to get casual GOT viewers.

I was going to watch it last night, but I saw a 1:15runtime and decided I wasn't looking forward to it enough to stay up late. If this was Season 3 of Thrones, I would have started it no matter how late it was.

I hope they explain how he bleaches his flowing hair. I’m assuming vidal sassoon or L’Oréal wasn’t around then.

Pretty good first episode. I don't think these characters alone so far can carry the story so hopefully it expands into the other families quickly.

To me it felt like a daytime soap version of GOT with characters that purposely looked like characters from GoT. Feel like at the counsel meeting there was a Baelish, Varys, and Sam look-alike at the least.
Anyway, doubt I will last long with it, and I can admit that it's me having a severely short leash for anything in this universe after the last few seasons.

I don't know whether or not the books exist in this thread, but would just say the prophecy does drive some characters' (Targs') behavior in the time from Viserys to the GOT timeline. But yeah, I also hope and expect it won't be a major plot issue in this show.

Funny you say that. I was going to say that It felt a little soap operaish after the first half and it picked up for me in the second. As others have mentioned, they are going to need a bigger scope than just the Targaryens. If it’s basically just them without the scope of the world, it’s going to feel like a soap.

forget the books, seems like you'll be able to enjoy this even if you never watched GoT. It's like 170 years before GoT world. I had a hard time keeping up with the sir names from GoT in this episode. I forgot how much internet searching I had to do watching GoT to keep up with all the names and relationships.
