Agreed. I thought the episode was good - although not great - but the biggest reason why it wasn’t clicking for me is all the characters were either dull or caricatures.
It’s early though, obviously, so willing to give it time to develop.

I skipped the last couple of seasons of GOT. I know how it ended, but I checked out when I felt like the story was getting too disjointed and . . . random, I guess. I know nothing at all about the book HOTD is based on, and I know nothing about any of the actors, show runners, or anything else about this new series, but I figured I would give it a chance. I thought the first first episode was fine-to-pretty-good. Happy to give them a season to see what they can do with this new material.
(I also plan to watch at least the first few episodes of the new LOTR show. The Hobbit was terrible of course, but hey maybe Amazon will surprise us all and produce something solid. Worst case scenario is watching a small handful of episodes that I decide to bail on.)

i liked it a lot the first time i watched it and i put it on again last night after i mowed the lawn and was beat and i actually had an easier go of it the second time i sort of knew the characters better and it just came together in my head a lot better it probably says something about me getting on in years but it takes me a bit to sort of figure out who everyone is and learn thier faces and the second time was much easier take to the bank brohans

I didn't think GOT was great out of the gate either, so grain of salt and all that. I thought the premiere was pretty bland. Even compared to the GOT premiere, where you at least have the Jamie/Cersei/Bron thing to give a big ending. This was just all setup, which was kind of weird because the first scene already tried to do a setup by handwaving how we got the point of having Viserys on the throne. Then we get an entire episode to just arrive at the same point. Two potential heirs. One female.
Nothing was actively bad (although I thought Viserys giving the "I should have seen it was always you!" speech came out of thin air), but I didn't find much compelling either. I eventually see most stuff, but this is more of a "catch-up when I'm up with a bout of insomnia" type of show for me so far. In some ways, it's a victim of GOT's success. For all its faults, GOT proved that you could mount a handsomely produced grand fantasy show. And it felt pretty unique for it at the time. But we've had GOT now. I'm not sure good production values and big battle scenes are going to have the same oomph.

They spent enough time in one early council scene addressing the formation of some relationship among the free cities of Essos, and pirates from Essos raiding the stepstones that it seems like we'll get some of Essos in the mix at least. Who's up for some Iron Bank action?

They discussed the "Triarchy" at the first counsel meeting - its an alliance of three of the free cities of Essos who have moved into the Stepstones and are causing some problems. Its a concern for Corlys more than others because its near his lands. This will almost certainly be a big part of the show this season - some of it is pretty clearly depicted in the trailers.

I wonder if this show will eventually just evolve into the story of the Targs up to just prior to Robert' Rebellion. Work in the Blackfyre Rebellion and Dunc & Egg etc.

I still haven’t watched. The source material here is not as fleshed out as the first few seasons of Thrones. I haven’t read it, but it is presented as a historical thing, as opposed to having all of this dialogue and inner thoughts of point of view characters etc. So all of the dialogue and a lot of details and background of people will have had to have been made up and filled in here. It sounds like they are just presenting the written historical record almost right now.

This sounds about right to me. Love the GOT world so I'm in, but nothing great or even close to great yet. It's like this is a muted version of the original, lacking the rich colorful characters and humor (so far.)

No, GOT had me hooked from the start. Great opening with the WWs and beheading/with wolves.
The names are much harder than GOT. The Targaryen names are very similar. I mean Rhaenyra and Rhaenys are cousins and there is a Viserys and Velaryon. Daemon is the only easy one so far plus there seem to be Lords who’s houses didn’t exist in GOT. Probably get used to it but it wasn’t easy to follow in the first episode.

I saw something on twitter and checked out a few things last night. If you don't want to know a major plot result for this HotD season, please under no circumstances should you go back and watch season 3 episode 4 when Joffrey and Marge Tyrell are in the Sept of Baelor. Also, don't review any of the conversations between Jon and Aemon at the wall, Tyrion and Jorah's boat trip through Old Valyria or any of Danny's conversations with Jorah, Selmy or Jon.

Also, I do wish they'd do the opening credit map thing again. I found that quite helpful watching GoT.

Wasn't blown away but certainly see the potential. Like others....I do worry that the limited scope might make it a little soap opera like. But we shall see.
Thought it was pretty bizarre that anyone who loses a joust (presumably a sporting competition between knights during peace time) could just decide to turn it into a fight to the death if they lost. Hell, how in the world was that one guy supposed to react when the heir to the throne starts swinging at him after he was unhorsed?
It's like everyone was the Mountain from season 1 trying to decapitate lloras tyrell.

Yeah, the joust scene was the worst part of the episode, that stuff made no sense. Wasn't a fan of hitting us over the head with interspersing the "the birthing bed is our battlefield" botched c-section scenes there either. Seems like they're a little over committed to the sex and gore for the sake of sex and gore, didn't serve the plot much.

Yeah, the bizarre, seemingly out of place melee where these knights (who, as I understand it, have to be high born and well to do) just started killing each other seemed weird.

I thought the birthing scene was good because it helped us learn about the king.

The beheading scene was mentioned at least twice. I know I mentioned that I liked the first GOT episode more when I also mentioned my worry about the series being too confined. I enjoyed the episode but it was definitely less epic. Going to be really weird to a degree with no WW threat. I enjoyed all the gamesmanship of the warring houses but there was always the winter is coming/beyond the wall aspect regardless of how they crashed landed that in the last season.Dude, it's not hard to compare the first episode of 2 series.Wow, tough crowd

If I were to make a comparison, GOT is basically LOTR or The Hobbit and HotD is LOTR/Hobbit without Sauron/Smaug/Orcs. It can still be solid but it’s a narrower world.

They alluded to the WW by mentioning the secret passed down from king to king about the real war in the north and how they needed to be ready for it. I mean I doubt they can bring them into the show as it would destroy canon from the original series (WW been gone thousands of years) unless they did something where the people who saw the WW all died or something. Seems like it'd be clumsy to attempt.

Exactly, the warning was mentioned as was the prince that was promised. There’s no way to weave in the WWs because even Benjen going missing was 150 years after this show.
Eh, I don’t see why not. WWs won’t appear unless they mess with the timeline and there won’t be much to do in the north or north of the wall. The Targaryens rule for another 150+ years so they’d have to get really close to the start of GOT.
