Yeah, the characters aren’t as good as GOTs. Otto and Aemond’s talk felt less cool than it should have been. I’ve enjoyed it so far and as long as there are no more birthing scenes, I’ll be good. They’ve said this will be 4 seasons man. An article mentions that one big battle was pushed from season 2 to 3, so we might get a few filler episodes.

Yeah, the characters aren’t as good as GOTs.

For me, the characters aren't close to GOT as there is hardly any likable ones to root for. And there is a lack of any Tyrion type of fun or humor, just seemingly miserable people.
I'm not expecting comedy but this series is so dark compared to GOT. There are some good scenes and effects but that seems to be about it. I'll try a couple more episodes to see if it takes a different turn.
It seems like others are enjoying it a lot more than me.

Thought it was good-ish. Some decent setup for what I'm sure is to come. Clearly the budget is there. I like some of the characters but there's nobody close to the level of the early GOT's seasons. They're all just lesser and less charismatic versions. Alcock had potential to grow into the something but she's obviously gone now. Smith is pretty good as Daemon and Aemond is solid but nobody else has "it".

Lol. I don't hop out of bed with my wife at 10 pm to come in here to see what you nerds thought. With the amount of pure crap available on TV it's wild to me that anyone would trash these series. Even GoT was better than just about everything else at the end. I guess saying "I bailed on GoT when it got stupid" is cool?

We are a truly entitled generation of people. The scope of these two shows is nothing short of incredible.

GOT did actually get stupid. I'm not the only person who felt that way. That particular opinion seems to be shared by literally everybody living on this planet except for you. Which is fine -- art is subjective, and if you liked what they did with the last couple of seasons, wonderful. There's a bunch of Star Wars and Marvel content out there just waiting for you, and part of me envies you for that.

It's fine to hold contrarian views about various franchises, but there's something very weird about storming in and stamping your feet in anger when somebody casually mentions that they tapped out of a show that was universally-panned during the end of its run. Get out of your little bubble.

If you truly didn't watch the last couple seasons of GoT out of spite I feel bad for you. But, like you said. Art is subjective. I do think a whole lot of people bailed on it, or said they bailed on it, due to their own pretentiousness of not being ahead of the crowd anymore. "They ran out of source material. It's not as good." Ehh. Ok. I'm not going to argue that the dialogue was as good. It wasn't. But, it was still pretty damn good, and the film-making aspect of the show was prodigious.

I'm not angry about anything. Calling these guys idiots or saying they ruined a franchise is a little much for me though. I can't create what they did. I can't even fathom it. There's a whole lot of good TV in the last three seasons of GoT, and House of the Dragon is certainly entertaining enough so far.

Here is my position- the show got far away from what I and many loved - intelligent characters scheming, great dialogue, and great characters. Usually what I see as examples of greatness in the later seasons are the epic battle episodes. Hardhomme, this one, etc. Yes, those were damn good, but IMO it's still not worth wading through the other 8+ hours of the seasons that have very little of what I described I loved.

Way too much epically dumb, Walking Dead type stuff going on. Enjoyable on its own terms, but a harder pill to swallow after the 1st 4 seasons.

I get that, and I said it in the other thread when they originally aired so I'll be done after this. Everyone loved those aspects of it. I don't know how you scheme against dragons and zombies? The show was always going in that direction. Cersei was still running her schemes. So was Littlefinger and he got got in his last one. People hated Dany's turn, but it was always there. Foreshadowed back in season 2 and throughout the series. I just have the stance that many of the people that didn't like the last seasons as much or decided to bail did so because they didn't know the outcomes anymore and couldn't feel superior to people only watching the show. Not everyone, but some.

They got heavy handed with some of it and definitely sped a few things up. It was still pretty great TV though. My two cents.

It was as great visually and had some awesome moments but honestly, it also showed some of the problems the show runners had when they ran out of material. We see the Dothraki get basically wiped out and pretty much all the Unsullied. A week later in Kings Landing they are miraculously healed and back to full force.

I certainly was going to watch the entire show, hell I even finished The Walking Dead, but I could see people dropping out if they were that bothered by some of the Hollywood magic that appeared because they didn’t have a finished book to use. I thought it was still more than entertaining to watch (some amazing battles) even until the end but the last few seasons weren’t close to the amazing first 4 or 5.

Based on how long it’s taken for the last book, I think he was an advisor and not the creative source of everything. The problem wasn’t the story, it was the execution and details that fell apart. The show runners may have had the arcs and big battles/stories in place but it as how they got to the end and filled it out that was the problem.

That was my take from Season 1. The two Rhae's were good and Daemon was set up, IMO, to be the Tyrion of this show but it's all a little too grim for me. Maybe I've changed, but I just don't connect with any of them all that much.

I've since gotten rid of HBO and don't feel the need to sign back up just to watch this. Maybe I'll binge it when it's all done.

Really looking forward to Dunk & Egg, though.

Often wondered if the books ever got done (lol) if they’d go back and re-do the series like 20 years from now. I guess they are doing a Harry Potter series now so anything is possible.

I think I agree with you, but in fairness, it would be hard for a new spin-off to match the cast of characters in the first few seasons of GOT. Characters like Tyrian, Little Finger, and Daenerys were awesome and can't easily be replicated. None of the new characters in HOTD reached those highs in S1 IMO.

Edit: Hell, King Joffrey did absolutely nothing but chew the scenery every time he was on screen, but he was a great villain. The cartoonishness just worked out for whatever reason.

I think that the original GoT was one of those things that became so personal for the viewer that a good portion of the seriously vocal viewer* was going to have a problem with the end of the story if it didn't break their way. Yes, it could probably could have been two more seasons; or at the least another 140 minutes to the final season...but nothing other than Dany taking the Iron Throne was going to satisfy the Khalesi faction of this franchise.

In the end though, I don't think there was any character that didn't get a logical/expected ending for their character. Even Bran, (the narrative of "the best story" being crappy aside) had, as one of the only legitimate sons of a great house left, had a semi-logical reason to be on The Iron Throne.

Like I posted in the other thread, it got more and more on D&Ds back with the writing as it went on, and they had less and less of his actual dialogue and source material to work with. They seemed to be able to find great talent to direct the episodes and to do the score and design title sequences, but for some reason they didn't do the same for the writing.

As posted above, since Aegon’s sister/wife is one of many who cares characters, the killing of her son didn’t have the wow factor. I think the sawing sound that I think I remember hearing was the creepiest part of it.

This episode was so bleak it reminded me of season 5 of GOT, which was the closest I ever got to abandoning that show. I don't have 1% of the investment in this show that I did in Thrones. I'll probably unenthusiastically watch the next few episodes to see if I continue on with it or not.

As posted above, since Aegon’s sister/wife is one of many who cares characters, the killing of her son didn’t have the wow factor. I think the sawing sound that I think I remember hearing was the creepiest part of it.

My wife (who follows the show online more than I do) mentioned there was way more negative reaction to the kicking of the dog than to the head-sawing-off of the baby boy.

As posted above, since Aegon’s sister/wife is one of many who cares characters, the killing of her son didn’t have the wow factor. I think the sawing sound that I think I remember hearing was the creepiest part of it.

My wife (who follows the show online more than I do) mentioned there was way more negative reaction to the kicking of the dog than to the head-sawing-off of the baby boy.

Feel like HBO really booted that last scene. It was kind of a meh moment when it was supposed to be one of the most anticipated scenes in the series. Like Red Wedding level omg.

I didn't know it was coming and it was pretty shocking to me.

We just finished it. My wife found it very upsetting.

Aemond and Daemon could be such a badass characters, but the writers just don't seem like they'll be able to get them where they need to go. Daemon has been turned into a bore or a character.

You didn’t laugh when Ser Criston was going diving and then Alicent says, “Never Again,” because I knew that wasn’t true and then it’s a cowgirl party after the baby gets whacked? I certainly laughed.

They were both awesome in season one. There’s only been one episode.

Agreed. I really wish I cared about the characters in this show. If they die or some sort of traumatic event occurs, I'm like oh well
