Big Dragon pretty OP....and now Black's biggest dragon is dead. Things aint looking so hot for that side.

edit: although I guess a couple of the unclaimed dragons are pretty sizable. So maybe that's how this thing doesn't end in a total rout.

Was it really that op. She was stupid not getting higher when looking for it after it was injured. Speaking of which how did the big dragon hide below her unseen?

The dragon v dragon stuff is what we are all here for and it didn't disappoint.
It was fun although I didn’t like that Rhaenys just gave up her dragon. I’m sure it’s that way in the books but she had a win. Aegon (if he survived that’s just stupid) was killed by Aemond. It just felt like she gave up her dragon knowing she’d lose. I think I would rather have seen her lose right away.

Also, Vhagar isn’t fast at all so it did feel a little silly that he was hiding right where we knew he was behind the castle. It wasn’t a surprise but all of sudden he’s super fast?

It’s hard to sound like I didn’t enjoy the episode because I did enjoy it. Just little observations.

One of my complaints above. She went from being confident and smart to just basically turning it into a suicide without thinking.

Can we get a dragon power ranking and a list of all the dragons left with their riders?

Aemond’s dragon is obviously a beast but can it beat Daemons? Can it beat Rhyara’s dragon?

Funny, as soon as they started the dragon death match I thought to myself, she's going to die. Was kinda thinking the dragon would eat her but it worked either way. Agree it seemed a little lazy in the writing I kinda thought it was coming anyhow so wasn't too hard to suspend belief.

What threw me was the different sizes of the dragons. Guess it had been a minutes since there was a scene with multiple dragons but they were all such different sizes kinda took me by surprise.

That’s a good way to describe how I felt. It was telegraphed what was going to happen and felt a little lazy. I think it might have been better to have one eyed Willie kill the king while Rhaenys was fighting him and then have him finish her in a single battle. We all knew she was going to die but to make the largest dragon all of a sudden hide behind a tiny castle and then move at hyper speed (we saw how slow Vhagar is) was a little lazy. At that point Rhaenys should have just bolted for home and be happy to be up 1 dragon and 1 king. There was no purpose in her sacrificing herself when she already accomplished a huge win.

Again, I do understand that she was going to die story wise but the way they did it didn’t make sense in the way it was written.

Rhaenyra’s dragon would be a cake walk, Daemon’s much tougher. Vhagar is huge but old and slow and Caraxes is a different kind of dragon.

She was holding her own. I’m sure she didn’t want to abandon the battlefield and if she could somehow take out Vhagar and Aemond, the war would essentially be over. Read that those two dragons were Viserys and Daemons parents dragons.

How does Maverick come from beneath his two students and then shoot the gap between them in Top Gun?

I mean, they’re riding dragons into battle. Probability of death is pretty high.

I’ll agree that it seemed like she could have escaped twice. But, it’s war. If she could take out Vhagar they win.

I’ve got some gripes but overall it was a great episode.

Expectations are still low but the show is exceeding them.
Just finished episode three last night. Agree with this sentiment that the show has been good but definitely flawed at points. Both my wife and I immediately questioned why rhaenys (or however you say and spell her name - their names are so stupid and hard to keeptrack of) flew back towards Aemond and Vhagar. Seemed like suicide and out of her character.

She saw an opportunity to end the war by taking out the two biggest threats from the Greens in one battle. Or at least injure Vhagar enough to sideline him for a while. She actually held up pretty well in the direct confrontation.

Plus, probably a bit of guilt from not taking out the entire green side when she had the opportunity during the coronation.

I felt there was no way she would return to Dragonstone anyway. She either won or died trying.

I think the part where people are having trouble were her facial expressions. She had tears in her eyes. Like she had resigned to the fact that she and her dragon were going to die when it looked like she could have just flown away on two occasions. Had she attacked with more of an "I'm about to end this war" face maybe there wouldn't be so many qualms with the vibe of the scene? Maybe the fact that she and Melees injured Vhaghar gives them an advantage down the line.

I also know we have countless real heroes in our own history who faced certain death if they followed through with their duty but went ahead and did it anyway.

This. It felt like she broke through the fourth wall along with her dragon.

I definitely get why she did it and I assumed this is the story line of when she dies. No qualms with that just think the writing was a bit lazy. I feel like Vhagar was hiding on Star Destroyer like the Millennium Falcon and Chewy fixed the hyperdrive right before it attacked at 10x speed.

Really? Why?

She took out a massive amount of Cole's army as well as the king. Seems pretty darn successful to me.

I'd have to watch it again. Vhagar's angle of attack wasn't something that bothered me at the time. We knew it was coming as soon as Rhaenys turned around.

Ah, I like this point. If true that at least makes her actions make some sense. Perhaps maybe a comment to her dragon in high Valeryian about how they aren't letting them live this time or some such, or perhaps some more stern/determined facial expressions as suggested above, would have made this point more evident - because it does rationally explain at least her motivation for sticking around to try to take out Aemond and the much bigger Vhagar.

That said, as others noted above, her facial expressions combined with at least one to two clear opportunities to fly away (with a decent victory still in her pocket) just took away from the whole scene/battle.

Based on the shows, this isn’t accurate. Drogon was way bigger than all the smaller dragons in House of the Dragon.

I read the scene as Rhaenrys being an old warrior who knew who her time had come and threw all in on an off chance of ending this war right now even though death was a high probability. Her look of resignation was apt for the occasion. She was leaving it all on the field.

Oh, it was clearly telegraphed and I don’t recall there being a cliff or anything right there. With his slow speed and huge size it seems like a stretch that Vhagar could surprise with speed during a battle but even then it just makes Rhaenys look dumb. The one thing she had was a ton of experience.

It was a quick death with very little fighting so CGI cost was kept down but it made Rhaenys blow her one big advantage, speed of attack. That’s why I think it would have worked better if Vhagar took out both other dragons in one shot or at least Aegon first and then Rhaenys right after. It’s one thing to know you could easily die by challenging Vhagar and another to make a dumb move to ensure you can’t win.

Okay, fair, but the bold then is still where I have a gripe with the writers as the scene itself didn't give me the impression of the bold at all. Again, she accomplished some significant success and had at least one to arguably two chances to bail. That's a win and you head back to live to fight another day even as an old warrior because that's still what's best for your side. I just don't believe an "old warrior" dies for almost selfish reasons simply because she felt it her time.

Now, if she was severely wounded or she needed to sacrifice herself to let the black army get away without being entirely demolished or something, then the bold makes sense. But that wasn't how the scene was written.

Add this to the resolute stance of her niece now attesting that war was the only outcome and with that the knowledge that she could have ended this before it began but chose not too and the motivation is clear to me and I have no problem with the script or decision. And, we know there is a sheer cliff beyond the castle because we saw it earlier so that fits into the arc as well.

Kinda how I watched it. Plus, she would have left the castle army with zero hope, they would have been decimated. Bad look for team black to just abandon their allies and leave them for slaughter.

We saw the cliff when Princess flew in earlier in the scene, as it turns out she was wary of being attacked from above as she was low to the ground and was preoccupied to notice vhagar come from below.

I don’t want to get into book stuff but…….in the books Meraxes is a fair match for Vhagar 1 on 1. It wouldn’t have been a suicide mission. It took both Vhagar and Aegon’s dragon together to bring her down.

Gotcha. Still a really dumb move on her part to basically fly into an area where she could be surprised, really maybe the only area. Heck, Aemond would have had to guess perfectly where she’d fly over.
