Agree with those except Joseph. I don't want to roll with Kareem (assuming we pick up his option) & McCain at corner. You save $4.5M each on Manning & Daniels if you cut their injury prone selves. I wouldn't designate Schaub a June 1st cut either, just take the whole $10M dead money in 2014, you're still saving $4M off the cap. Those 3 moves would put us at around $20-$25M under for 2014 and even further in 2015 to use on Watt.
Explore resigning Antonio but only if its at a discount. Try to sign some cheaper o'line & DB depth in FA. Use that 1st on Bridgewater. The 2nd on a LB or on a DE or DB if there aren't any from FA. The 3rd on O'line.
For coach IDK. Greg Roman seems like a good fit and well rounded with an offensive mind but having had defensive experience. He also has Texans ties from being the QB coach here at one time.

I'm not a believer in Case so I think the 1st has to go on a QB. Too bad though, would have loved to see another stud pass rusher like Clowney or Anthony Barr paired up with Watt. Probably would be a wrecking crew on defense.

I agree with most of this. Biting the bullet on Schaub is the way to go. We have to have money free for Watt. Antonio Smith would be nice if we can get him cheaply.
I'm not a believer, either, but I would not be opposed to drafting Clowney and going QB in the 2nd or 3rd and giving them a year to develop while rolling with Keenum. Kind of like the Bengals did with Carson Palmer and Kitna. If we could find a decent veteran (more in the Kitna vein) then I'd be down with that, too. I'd just hate to pass on Clowney if we somehow have that chance (which I don't think we will). A good pass rush would mask our weak secondary.

Start with getting rid of Kubiak/Schaub. Then ditch Rick Smith and get someone good as GM to rebuild the whole thing and find the right coach.

On the cap, remember that a high #1 pick will take a chunk of that available number. Here's Luck's contract, his cap number was $4M, 5, 6, 7, for the first four years. So I think we are projected at $10M under for now, but cut out half that for the rookies.
I can see an argument for keeping Daniels and/or Manning. Both are in the last year of their contracts and are off the books in 2015 anyway. Daniels would give a new QB another nice receiving outlet (if healthy) and Manning shores up the safety position (if healthy) for one more year. But you can also argue it would be more important to clear them off the books now and then you can roll anything unused in 2014 to 2015. Gives you a lot more space for Watt's resigning and for any FA's you want to target. Plus Graham & Griffin is making Daniels seem awfully redundant at this point, more so than Keo filling in for Manning IMO. I can't see cutting Joseph, Jackson is a FA after 2014 so we'd have no starting corners in 2015 so you'd have to come up with a plan to draft or sign a replacement and even halfway decent corners are not cheap in FA.

Maybe so but youve piled on enough man. We are at rock bottom and we all know you love it. Contrary to popular belief most of us around here were never in love with Kubiak or Schaub but it was unrealistic to believe anything would change until the team stopped winning. Your constant reminders are just old, as Im sure youd get tired of me wishing Pep Hamilton a long tenure as Colts OC.

Keep Manning because there are more holes on defense than we have draft picks to address. Try to resign Ninja on a 2 year deal.
Draft another corner, rush linebacker, and for gods sake an ILB.
Joseph stays, he's one of the few bright spots we have. Cut McCain, I hate his face.
Brooks Reed should be a backup. Bring in competition for him.
Fat Kicker gets shown the door, find some UDFA rookie in camp.
Oh and finally, finally, END THE DECADE LONG PAIN THAT IS Joe Marciano.

I'd like to get rid of Phillips too. The defense is terrible in the red zone and it is so annoying to watch the linebackers get exposed in coverage every week. We're also way too vulnerable to the big play. If we keep him and his scheme then we need to find multiple safeties and linebackers that can run. The team speed at those positions is pathetic.

I forgot to mention. If we didn't have a top 5 pick, I would be VERY tempted to switch back to a 4-3 with Cushing in the middle, Reed on the strong side, and Merc in that Von Miller role. Put Ninja back inside and use the top 10 pick on a DE. We really don't seem to have the linebacker personnel to be running the 3-4 right now.

Having seen what Keenum is capable of prior to the more recent disasters, I don't think it's clear whether we need to draft a QB in round 1. I think Keenum is allowed a few bad games before we start writing him off. If he can get back to what he was doing just one month ago, we can use that #1 pick to greater effect on the BPA. I agree that a great QB masks a lot of weaknesses, but getting someone of that caliber is just a crapshoot. Our 2012 team showed that we can have a lot of success with a great run game, a great pass rush, a clutch WR and a poor-but-good-enough QB. for the draft, if it looks like 2014 Case Keenum can be at least a poor-but-good-enough QB i think we should roll with him and draft BPA round 1. Shore up the Oline with good run-blockers, get some RB prospects to see who can pan out as an eventual Foster replacement, and fill in defensive holes as opportunities present themselves.
I'm not smart enough to know who is getting paid more than they're worth, so i have no firm opinion on whether cutting guys like daniels, manning, joseph is a good idea, but i will say that 1) daniels when healthy is a red zone target that we would need to replace if we did lose him, and 2) joseph seems to be the only real bright spot in our secondary so i wouldn't like to see him go, but if the money he gets doesn't make sense then oh well. honestly i would probably keep schaub though, if i understand the money right it only saves us 4MM to lose him and we have gotten a lot of good lessons this season on what can happen to a team that doesn't bother with a solid backup QB. (I know, 'solid' and 'schaub' are not popular words to see in the same sentence right now, but as a veteran backup i think Schaub is good enough.)

Kubiak's primary sin this season was giving Schaub too much leash. I think he's been cured of that. The other issue is as always the extremely predictable play calling. It IS infuriating when things don't work out, but on the other hand when the run game was really clicking it didn't really matter that everyone knew what the Texans were going to do... it worked anyway, and those were some of the funnest times to watch the Texans play. Whereas somebody new can change the whole way of doing things, which i don't think i like.
My opinion is that we should just do whatever it takes to fix whatever it is that needs to be fixed so that we can run the ball like we did in most of 2012, and we will be a great team in 2014. not a flawless team (is there such a thing?), but a great team. imagine the 2012 Texans with an additional elite pass rusher (and/or firmer secondary), an additional dynamic WR, and a (at least slightly?) better QB. Definite playoff contender in my mind. Is it really possible?i hope so, but i have no idea. you tell me.

This is painful... Curious to see what this thread was like in September. The Texans and Falcons are by far the biggest disappointments in the NFL. Just a few comments from page 1 that I enjoyed.
Betting you didn't see the Texans in the Bridgewater sweepstakes? At least you might finally land a franchise QB!
Nailed it in the beginning of the season. This probably sounded like a rant to most Texan fans then, but this was fairly accurate.
Drafted them in both my leagues - I started NE against Denver over them this week when they played Jax - Their defense is awful, & they've been bad all season before the injuries... I don't understand, I thought their defense would be good too!

Pep Hamilton sucks and I readily admit it. What I get tired of is fans not willing to admit their team has issues.
I'm not trying to pile on at all. I'd prefer to see good football in our division. Then let the better team prevail. We've had that about twice in the last 10 years so it sucks.
With that said, the Texans have several very good parts to build upon. And I know franchise QBs are few and far between. I think this is a starting point once you replace the staff.
Again, a sincere good luck. Losing sucks.

You take a QB in round one, most likely you get a pretty good QB. A franchise QB would be great, but it's more likely that you get either an OK rookie QB or a total bust. We have yet to really learn whether we already have an OK QB, but if we do then it's definitely not worth the pick to get another QB.

yeah, def draft a QB to compete with Case. I see it turning into a Rivers v. Brees type situation. Hopefully, the #1 will turn out better.
All I want for Christmas is a franchise QB. I don't know if there is one in this draft, but I think we need to find out.
Do you guys think we should try to keep the Zone Blocking Scheme? Can Arian run in a different system? Will Duane Brown be as dominant in another system? Does Chris Myers and/or Brandon Brooks fit?

I agree...it's high time we had one of the top QBs in the league instead of an average starter. Get the right coach and QB and then you can cover up a lot of deficiencies to start with....I guess I'm more concerned with the organizational makeup first and foremost. McNair almost seems clueless about football at times. The Dan Reeves deal years ago was quite strange, and the whole Ed Reed signing was odd too. Seemed like a meddling owner move but I'm not sure we'll ever get the real story about who was behind it. He seems to be a heckuva businessman though. I wish he could hire the right guy to run the whole football operation, whether that's a Team President or GM in title. Someone who no doubt runs the show. The current setup seems a little backward, with Rick Smith coming in after Kubiak. There are accountability questions at all levels of the organization. I'd like this new football "Czar" to also be a personnel whiz, and then go out and get "his" coach. There are several possible coaches to get excited about (well, maybe anyone but Kubiak would be exciting at this point) but I'm not sure how well that would click if the organizational setup remains intact with Rick Smith. Does Rick become that GM, freed from Kubiak? It's always tough to tell, because Rick's best draft pick was JJ Watt and he could be seen as a Wade Phillips draft pick instead. Does anyone else think the current setup is kind of odd? It's not always easy to tell who is calling what shots, and I'd like a new setup that erases those doubts and establishes clear accountability. To me that's the fundamental flaw of this team.

Well its hard to judge Smith because you dont always know who is calling what shots....I could see it but Im hoping they overhaul that aspect too....seems McNair wants to do right but is really desperate for a head of football ops he can count on....

I know that this looks like an accomplishment, but we have to remember this is a marathon and not a sprint. The players have to stay focused and committed and not have lapses that could cost them like nearly happened today against the Patriots. The coaches need to continue to put players in positions to perform as they have. And our fans need to keep contributing the kind of positive reinforcement that they have this year.
Nothing is easy, but if we all pull together I know we can continue to build on the direction we're heading this season to get home to our goal.

Yeah it was annoying that now they decided to play NE tough. We need to really concentrate and blow this game on Thursday and then we'll have a great shot. Luckily we have Gary Kubiak and Joe Marciano on our side so Im very optimistic....

Texans receiver Andre Johnson became the second-fastest player in NFL history to reach 900 catches. Only Marvin Harrison did it faster than Johnson's 150 games. And Harrison only beat him by one. Asked about it, Johnson gave answers that matched his personality. "I don't think it's really hit me yet," Johnson said. "To hear that, in my mind, Jerry Rice is the greatest receiver to ever play. So to do something faster than he's done is a tremendous honor."

Foster would not be successful outside of the ZBS. Several of our linemen, including Myers would not be good outside of the ZBS either. I think we need to keep it or blow up the whole roster.

IMO, it all starts there.
Look at what a OC change in Indy has done to Luck's production.
Clean house in the staff, bring in an offensive mind and defensive guru to take advantage of the talent on the team. You guys have a lot of talent!

Trying to come back early in 2011 did him in. Shouldn't have played week 17, I guess.

It seems like we don't even try to use him enough. I'm all for using Andre Johnson but sometimes these guys are all afterthoughts.... What bothers me most about Kubiak's scheme is that they don't involve the other wide receivers enough. And you would think with the emphasis he put on the tight end position that you would have a special athlete or two to run in there. Find a former basketball player type with special size or speed to play that number two tightend spot. I know Owen Daniels has been hurt but in my opinion should always have a developmental guy with freakish athleticism.

I want a head coach that brings some edge to this team. Maybe even a little surly with the media. The last few times we matched up with the Patriots they made us look like the softest organization around. From what happened yesterday with Antonio Smith's comments and Logan Mankins comments to the letterjacket BS and shellackings last year, we always come across looking like pretenders. We need someone who isnt gonna stand for that crap...

If we secure the number one pick, it HAS to be Bridgewater right? Are there any other scenarios you guys would be ok with? Like Clowney round 1 and QB round 2? Or Matthews 1st? Are y'all open to trading down if offered a nice enough package?

Man I want to go for it with a top QB....Im sick of watching other teams with an elite QB. As much as I love JJ Watt Id rather have an elite QB over any other position. Im sure Clowney would be great next to Watt but we gotta hire the right guys and then get the right QB....true there are a lot of busts but you also get more of the top guys there. I dont want an Andy Dalton type. I would think 2nd rounder bust rate is worse but I dont have any data backing that up. Plus we'd likely have to trade back into the back of the first to get who we want and give up picks. I say pick your QB then spend the next few picks giving him help. A RT, athletic TE and speed WR will all help him, not unlike what the Colts did for Luck. Hes got to be the focus of the rebuild....this current regime was always too happy to plug a guy here and there instead of taking a strength and making it stronger. How many years did we just tread water with Kevin Walter? Think Schaub couldve done better with someone besides Jacoby Jones to challenge Walter? So we have good WRs? So what add a TY Hilton type and give your new QB matchup choices. Add an athletic TE who can develop and turn into a matchup nightmare in a year or two. And for the love of God replace Derek Newton. Then focus on defensive speed in the draft after this.....

Hopefully whoever are GM and coach will be good at talent evaluation, so I'd want them to stay true to whatever they think. If they think Bridgewater is only marginally better than a QB they think slides to the 2nd round, then I don't have a problem with Clowney/Barr/LT and then a QB in the 2nd.
But if they do think there's some separation and there's a future franchise QB to be had, definitely take him.
I would definitely draft some O-line, but I probably wouldn't add a WR or TE in the first 3 rounds unless they were the best value at my pick. Given the current team you'll help a young QB a lot more fixing RT and LG right away. WR and TE are good enough to get by for a year and would be a luxury pick in my mind given the other holes. MLB is a need, OLB is a need. DE might be a need if Antonio doesn't re-sign, and corner and safety are both extremely thin. I agree about putting a QB in a situation to succeed, but I don't think the current WRs and TEs are going to drag a QB down.

I would've liked to have seen Quessenberry stay healthy and play some LG. I think we can find a competent guard but RT is a pressing need. If we go defense then we need speed, speed, and more speed. I've been clamoring for some LBs that can run for a while. I don't care if we play 34 or 43 but whatever LBs are on the field need to be sideline to sideline types. The safeties are slow too, and we could use another corner to play nickel at least until we have to give up either Joseph or Jackson. McCain and Harris suck.
I agree the most important thing is to get the right combo GM and coach. Everything else will come together if we do that right...

If I were a Texans fan, I'd hope for Sean McDermott. Dan Quinn has done a great job too and is a rising star, but I really don't know how much he actually does for them, as opposed to Carroll.
