Houston Texans 2013 In-season thread (1 Viewer)

McClain should be fired then too. What a bunch of crap.
never been a fan of his views and/or writing....some say he's the mouthpiece for a McNair & Co. and this could be their way of warming fans up to the possibility of giving Kubiak another shot. I'll be shocked if they did but nothing surprises me anymore with this organization.
I dunno how that can warm up fans as most fans think Pancakes is an idiot.

But what kind of owner fires his general manager and coach one bad season after they won back-to-back AFC South titles and a playoff game each year?

One that has given said coach 8 years and total control of the team to go on an 11 game losing streak. They got embarrassed in the playoffs by anyone not named Cincy. They also struggled in the regular season against good playoff caliber teams. Kubiak has never developed the talent he had on the roster properly.

Them allowing Kubiak to stay on is an indication to me that they have no belief in Keenum. I mean, if he isn't allowed to play and develop now, when will he?

The front office's reaction to this will be very telling to me.

In the least, they should try to get Keenum experience even if he's going to be a backup.
Keenum really isn't special. I mean sure, he has been better than expected, but thats because expectations for an UDFA are low. He isn't a turnover machine like Schaub, but he can't read a defense, he can't recognize a blitz, and he can't seem to find receivers unless he is scrambling around extending the play and it turns into backyard football. I think getting him experience is rather irrelevant at this point. I don't think a new coach with keep either QB next year. I think they draft a rookie and sign a veteran like Jason Campbell, Hoyer, etc. to back him up. Schaub will be backing up Rodgers in GB.

Well i'm coming around on the idea of taking a QB with our #1 pick... It's hard to hit on a franchise QB but that's the best chance we've got to get one. I wasn't able to watch last nights game so i don't have a ton of confidence in this, but it definitely feels like Keenum IS NOT the guy like i had hoped. So which QB do we want? I don't watch much college football, is Bridgewater really that great? does he have real NFL potential? none of the other 1st round quality qb prospects seem to be a good idea. Carr has a less than good Houston connection and i don't know if that feels right, while Manziel is supposedly undersized plus i don't like his face. If not Bridgewater seems like the best plan is to shoot for one of the rd2 sliders. what are the odds of (Hundley, McCarron, Garoppolo, Mettenberger) becoming a top notch NFL qb?

Some thoughts on Rick Smith's situation.

If I'm McNair a situation I would be cautious about is having Rick Smith pick a new head coach, then a year or two later I fire Smith and get a new GM. And that GM and the head coach aren't good fits for each other, in which case I've done little more than set the club back even further as we drafted players for a system whose coach we're now cutting. Basically like Jackonsville did where they get Mularkey as a coach and then get a new GM the next year and get another head coach.

If I have too much doubt about Rick Smith as a long term GM, I might clean house and reboot completely, even if otherwise I might have given him another year or so. That said, I'm still a bit on the fence about whether Smith is a long term GM or not. I think it's hard to say from our standpoint as we can't see how many of the personnel decisions were driven by Smith, and how many by Kubiak.

His game last night was the first I've seen of Bridgewater, and I haven't watched many of the other prospects very closely either.

Bridgewater is kind of lean so there might be some durability concerns. He's a pocket passer which I'd heard, but I didn't realize how mobile he was. He was pretty elusive, bought time on some plays and picked up a few first downs scrambling, though I'd not want him doing it a lot in the NFL with his size. His build is kind of like Mike Vick (but not saying he's that kind of runner).

Cincinnati was selling out to stop the pass, so Louisville was running a lot with only 5 or 6 men in the box. I thought he had good velocity and pretty good footwork. I got the feeling it wasn't his best game, and he was under a lot of pressure. The announcers mentioned his O-line has been playing poorly all season, so at least we know he has been able to be successful even with sub-par line play.

In the Texans thread, real rumors that some expect Kubiak to get fired TODAY, and no one is talking about it?

I see the rumors, though the Texans web site calls it a "Gary Kubiak press conference" so I'm wondering.

About to start, they have the webcast at houstontexans.com

watched some bridgewater highlights. highlight vid, so taken with tons of salt, but saw him moving really well in the pocket, love the quick release, and (again, highlights, so...) great accuracy. i have to say i like him so far! so assuming bridgewater is a decent bet to be a successful NFL QB maybe the real question to ask is: if we ended up taking clowney instead and rolling the dice on (Hundley, McCarron, Garoppolo, Mettenberger), would we be better off?

Texans are home next week, correct? After putting Schaub back in, concern over backlash by the home crowd in what is already a lost season? Desire from the GM / Owner / Management to see more of Keenum because this is probably his only chance to show he can grasp the blitz and various looks and whats the worst thing, they get first pick in the draft?

If Kubiak is let go, does Schaub have a chance to start, or is it Keenum - or even Yates?

Nope, at Indy. Then home for Denver, and then at Tennessee.

Thanks. So that's not playing into this at least (not that it should, perhaps, but you never know).

They are setting up a table with 3 chairs at it for the press conference. I assume this means he's gone and McNair and Rick Smith will be coming out.

Wade Phillips interim head coach. Will evaluate rest of coaching staff and players.

"Advantage of taking action now allows them to start the process of finding a new head coach."

McNair thanking Kubiak for the division championships and for his commitment to the job. Disappointed that it didn't work out, has to do what's best for the organization.

Kubiak didn't do the best job ever, but he's not one of the coaches who seems like a jerk so this may be a blessing in disguise. Hope he takes some time off to get his health back completely.

Q: WIll you look for a defensive or offensive coach?

McNair: Defensive coaches tend to be more successful but it will depend on the individual, not necessarily a defensive coach. (Then went through characteristics they want in a coach.)

Q: Is Wade a candidate for the permanent job?

McNair: Yes, he'll be interviewed along with another of other people.

Q: What was the last straw?

McNair: Losing. We have better talent than Jacksonville and got beat twice. A credit to Jacksonville, but we need to do better (etc etc)

Q: Was not sticking with Keenum a key contributor (in firing decision)

McNair: No, whole key is what is in best interest of organization. Case has had ups and downs, we tihnk he needs to be given opportunity and he will be given opportunity now. There are other things that happened, 14 penalties isn't difference in changing Case to Matt.

Q: When did you make the decision?

McNair: Flying back last night. We have more time (because of Thursday game) so made sense to do it now.

Q: How will you handle draft?

Rick Smith: Premature, we have 3 weeks to evaluate and that is what the objective is at this point.

Question about not naming people who are currently coaching, but will they mention those who aren't coaching presently, asked specifically about Lovie Smith.

McNair: We will (also) be talking to people who aren't currently in coaching and Lovie Smith is a good coach, but won't be making such public.

And that's a wrap

well let the speculation begin, i guess... we know they want someone with both HC experience (i.e. they don't want to bring a coordinator in as HC) and they want someone with NFL experience (i.e. they're not looking to bring in someone from the college scene) so actually the pool of candidates isn't that big. if you factor out those who don't use a zone blocking scheme and are otherwise incompatible with the existing Houston personnel, we should be able to come up with a pretty short list. and be 'we' i mean people who know a lot more about the HC scene than i do.

Not sure I want a retread but we'll see I guess. It definitely sounds like they are looking for what you've described here which is someone that can come in and use the majority of the existing players and schemes so no major blowup. My guess is they are planning on keeping Wade based on these press conference comments today, but we will see.

By keeping Wade, they will still have a Kubiak-esque coach. A good coordinator who shouldn't be a head coach.

I would love Cowher, but I don't see him coaching again. I would be okay with Lovie Smith. His defenses tended to be more dominant/aggressive than the ones Wade has had.

Not just changes with Gary Kubiak. Texans terminated contract of special teams coach Joe Marciano.

:D :D :D

YES!! Even bigger and better news than Kubiak getting fired!!!

I will alway have faith in Mr. McNair. I'm glad he proved us wrong and fired Gary before the season ended.

My main concern now is Rick Smith. I hope he isn't a Grima Wormtongue and is poisoning Bob's ear. He is just as responsible for this collapse. 2nd rounders Brooks Reed, Brandon Harris have been huge busts. Conner Barwin was an average at best 2nd rounder. Whitney Mercilus hasn't shown much. We passed on Russell Wilson for Devier Posey in the 3rd round. Signed Ed Reed. Signed Ahman Green. Developed no good 2ndary players besides Kareem Jackson and Glover Quin. Picked Fat Randy over the likes of LEGATRON, Walsh, and Tucker I think. Keyshawn Martin has been a letdown. Sam Montgomery was the biggest wasted pick in franchise history, worse than Bennie Joppru even!!!!

Fire Gary Kubiak...check.

Fire Joe Marciano...check.

Fire Wade Phillips...pending.

Fire Rick Smith...gosh I hope so.

Texans need a complete flushing.

and replace that damn kicker

Just realized Peyton is probably going to break the TD record against us. He needs 6 more right now so you figure 3-4 in week 15 and then he can finish it out in our house in week 16. :confetti:

At least we got some short lived satisfaction to beat him and his Bronco's in Denver last year, a feat we never managed while he was in Indy.
