How 'bout them Reds! (2 Viewers)

I forgot to mention that Detroit had a scout in Indianapolis on Sunday watching Volquez. I have no clue if that means anything.... just thought I'd mention it.

Phillips was awesome at the plate and in the field.Get Cliff Lee now, please
Why? The Reds need bullpen help, not more starting pitching.
Harrang is on the DL, Leak is being limited, and are you kidding me that Lee wouldn;t immediately be an upgrade over anyone that we currently have. I know we could use some bull pen help as well, but Lee would be another big inning eater

Can this team win a 5 game series in the divisional playoffs? Right now, Harang, Volquez, Leake, Bailey, LeCure, and Wood are all question marks. Bray just returned to the pen, and Masset is turning things around. Add Chapman and Bailey in there and I think we'll be fine. Then imagine a adding Cliff Lee to the rotation, and this team can win the world series.

Yes. I'm perfectly happy with Volquez, Arroyo, Cueto, and Leake. The question is, how much will it take to aquire Lee?

If they can move Harang in a deal for Lee, (obviously, they'll have to give up more) then I can see making a move. I can't see giving up the farm for Lee.

I'm not sure if Chapman will be added to the pen this year. Last I read, he was struggling. It's not a given that Bailey will be a success if moved to the bullpen, but I am all for trying.

Anyone have any Reds bobbleheads or figures they want to trade? I've got stadium giveaways of Morgan, Larkin, Phillips (double bobblehead) and an Adam Dunn figure.

I also have some non-SGA bobbleheads of the The Big Red Machine that were limited release a few years ago.

That was a heck of a game last night against the Phills. Too bad we couldnt pull that one off. We had two great chances, when Stubbs blew the squeeze play and when we stranded the guy on third (forget if it was Bruce or Miller) with 1 out. It would of been nice to be 4 Games ahead of the Cardinals.

If we would only have to give up Fransico and Alonso for Lee, i am all for it. Alonso won't see much playing time for as long as we have Votto, and we better sign him to a huge deal this off-season. Fransico looked terrible in the bigs early in the year, and doesnt look to be ready any time soon. It seems like 3B has plagued us for the past 10 years until Rolen this year. Larson and EE were both good prospects that obviously failed and that is probably was is going to happen with Fransico, he just doesnt look like a big league player from what i have seen in minors and bigs. All for it!!

I love Stubbs but he screwed up the hit-and-run too last night.

Pretty much. No excuses on that one.

Getting Cliff would be huge. I think Harang, Alonson, and Wood/Maloney/LeCure would be a great trade to get Cliff. I don't think getting rid of CoCo in the deal would help matters too much, and I am by far no where near liking him as our closer. Just don't think it's time to get rid of him in a trade unless we can somehow upgrade that for cheap, which is doubtful.

Stubbs may have screwed that hit and run last night, but I think he made up for it with the heads up play of getting from second to home on the BP K. Think he might be able to be given a pass for it, but I was only listening to it on the radio.

I highly doubt the M's want Harang or Arroyo. Alonso and Wood for half a season of Lee is probably a good deal for both teams.

Lee to Rangers. Working on a link.

Horrible blown game. They have to come back tomorrow and get it done. Stranded so many base runners tonight. Should have been ahead by 10 runs starting the 9th.

damn fine managing by dusty. mike leake's arm will have to be reattached after this season, but who cares, right? edinson volquez is coming back and that will right the ship.

are the wheels coming off the bus?

Well, there are two things that need to be addressed:

1) Orlando Cabrera needs to sit. Plain and simple. .282 / .327 / .609. Couple that with sub-par range and Janish is just begging for a chance. Hit Janish in the 8 spot and it immediately improves the team. He's probably the best defensive SS in MLB, but with a meh stick. Not .609 OPS meh, but slightly below average. They can get away with that in the lineup, hitting 8th, with his incredible defense.

2) Shore up the BP. STAT!

Have to be pleased with the way the young guys are pitching, but I'm afraid what a 4 game losing streak to another playoff-caliber team does to the psyche of this team.

And looks like Stubbs is regressing already from his more agressive stance at the plate.

that 3 HR game is a distant memory already, huh? i don't understand how dusty is handling stubbs. obviously, he's going to sit him against some right-handers. but why sit him this week against blanton and start him against halladay? seems like at-bats vs. blanton would get him confidence. at least stubbs hits the ball on the ground and tries to use his speed. if only some more players took that approach, they might be hitting better than .250 (not necessarily reds).

That was ridiculous. Everyone in the stadium except for Dusty knew Leake was gassed.Buster Olney was on Mike & Mike and this morning, and he said there's not much bullpen help out there. Olney said Kerry Wood might be the best bullpen help available right now. lol.... not sure, just repeating what Olney said. I'm more worried about catcher than SS. Corky Miller sucks, and Hanigan is not exactly Johnny Bench either.

Hanigan was a Top 3 catcher prior to him getting hurt. Now that he's back, I'm not concerned about the C. SS, on the other hand, is an issue, as is LF. Janish is as good as anyone on the planet defensively and is showing his stick is good enough. I loathe that OCab keeps starting. Talk about a black hole and his 0.609 OPS.LF - IMO, I would like to see Heisey get more starts and sit Gomes vs righties. Couple that w/ Nix being DFA'd and call up Danny Dorn to face LHP only. That'd make a fine platoon going forward. As for the BP, Volquez is going to come back after the ASG, so that leaves: Arroyo, Cueto, Volquez, Wood, Leake, Harang, Maloney, and Bailey later this year. I'd love to see Maloney sent down or shipped out for help in other areas and Harang moved to the BP. Eventually, Chapman in the BP (this year only and back to SP in the spring). Getting Harang out of the rotation helps this team and might help the BP.Oh and my kingdom for Stephen Drew (much more than Janish as SS). Alonso and Maloney are good starting points!

Based on what? Also, I heard the Reds are shopping Arroyo.

Hanigan is a very good contact hitter. Give him a week or two and I'd expect him to be hitting the ball as well as he was until his DL stint. As for OC, he's been in a huge slump, Janish definitely deserves more AB's. LF Gomes needs to pick it up. He's so damn streaky, but I am very high up on the Chris Heisey bandwagon. Hope Dusty isn't completely FOS and leaves Dickerson down in Louisville until September.

Nice to get this series early, hopefully a sweep tomorrow. Too bad the Dodgers are grabbing their ankles in St Louis.

Is there any relief help that could come up from the minors? I would also like to see Heisey platoon with Bruce occasionally against lefties.

stubbs gets on in the 7th and 9th and doesn't even attempt to steal 2nd. just awful managing. i mean, the guy has 17 steals out of 20 attempts and baker just drops an anchor around him. you're losing 1-0. run dummy run.

Cook is good at holding runners on and Olivo is great at throwing them out. Not too sure about Street in the 9th he doesn't allow a lot of baserunners. The big problem I saw was they didn't sacrifice with a runner on first and 1 out.But let's be honest the players lost this one. 1st and 3rd with 1 out and the next two guys strike out?also....just because a guy doesn't steal doesn't mean he doesn't have the sign. you get no jump you stay.

Homer Bailey will throw a simulated game tomorrow. He’s seven days from a minor league rehab assignment.

“Everything is feeling really good,” he said. “Now, I’ve got to build my pitch count all the way back up.”

Bailey is still a ways away obviously. Given how late it is in the season, their position in the standing and the depth of starting pitching, would the Reds consider Bailey for a relief role?

“I don’t know,” Dusty Baker said. “Right now, we’re conditioning him as a starter.”

Bailey has never relieved – except under the piggy-back system used in the minors one year – but he’s willing.

“Whatever they want me to do,” he said. “You’ve got to learn to make adjustments. I’ll do whatever they want me to.”
http://cincinnati.com/blogs/reds/2010/07/1...pt-relief-role/

I'd love to have Bailey for the 7th inning at least. Hell, he could pitch the 7th-9th every once in awhile to close out games and preserve the rest of the guys a little bit.

Not really a helpful answer, but I think the Reds will continue to use whoever is pitching well. If Wood keeps it up, he'll stay. If he struggles, he'll be gone quickly. The rotation continues to be a work in progress with the Reds trying to give the starts to whoever is working.

Bailey isn't just going to be given a spot automatically.

Travis Wood needs to prove today, that he is worthy of a spot in this rotation, I think Volquez needs to get his act together, maybe get sent down to AAA to figure it out. Then we can bring Bailey back, along with Leake, Cueto, Arroyo, and Wood. Trade Harang this week for a box of rocks, give Arroyo a contract extension to be the "veteran" of this team and move forward with these players. When/If Volquez gets back we can then decide on Wood and Bailey.

I can't believe with that lineup last night, how we could possibly lead the league in shutouts as well. 1st in runs scored, but 1st in shutouts? Just doesnt make sense.

That was a great series against a 1st place team, especially because we took 2 of 3. Now we need to take care of business against the Pirates, like the Cardinals did.

Officially throwing my hat into the Reds arena

Don't get me wrong, I ####### hate the Reds. I just hate the Cardinals that much more.

Go Reds
