Did they screw the pooch by signing Homer and not trading him for a bat?

Can they still trade him for a bat?

Can they trade anyone for a bat?

This season has so few highlights so far it's depressing me.

If we're talking hindsight, didn't even need to do that. Could have given the 100M+ homer money to Choo and just ridden out the last year of Bailey. I think Choo in left Hamilton in CF would make us a lot better right now, but that ship has sailed and trading for a bat like his is hard.
 
Coming into this season, I figured they would struggle to score runs, unless Hamilton absolutely blew us away and hit close to .300. Which I figured wasn't going to happen, at least not in year 1. We struggled to score runs last year and we had Choo who was 2nd in runs scored and top 15 in OBP.

Anyways my point of all this is how Jocketty totally ignored improving the offense. He always gets the credit for most of these players on the squad now/success, but what has he really done? He signed Homer to a terrible contract, Votto to a terrible huge contract, brought in Ludwick, Signed Masset, Broxton, Marshall, Madson. Failed to improve the offense in the last 3 years, are biggest improvement was a 1 year rental in Choo.

 
Could be just frustration after sitting through that rain delay, but that's as pathetic an offense as we've run out there in my lifetime. Bruce will eventually hit this year, but other than that I don't see any reason to think it'll change. Lost opportunity this year most likely.

 
Definitely feels like if they can get any value for Ludwick, then trade BP for a solid prospect, they might have a chance to replenish some solid talent. That's gotta be best case scenario. Along with trading Alfredo in July if he keeps pitching like he has.

Well, I guess they flipped the script, so to speak. offense is rolling and bullpen is dog####.It's obvious that the. Parra of parts of last year and Ondrusek of two(3?) years ago aren't coming back anytime soon. If the starter doesn't go seven innings, they may as well call the game.

Can't believe the pen has turned this into a one run game.

Make that a -2, errr -5 run game.

Putrid.

If Bruce/Votto/Phillips/Bailey ever get straightened out and we make the playoffs, they owe a lifetime of steak dinners to Mes/Simon/Frazier for bailing all the water out of our ship the last 2 months.

The rollercoaster ride continues. This is killing me. Cubs pitcher is perfect through 6 a day after the Reds scratch over .500.

You can't win them all (and this one isn't over yet), but does every loss have to be spectacular in some fashion (perfect game, blow an 8 run lead, walk in the winner run, ...)?

Edit: I need to overreact like a WWE announcer more often. I post that and they break the thing up almost immediately. I still feel like an inordinate amount of losses this year just feel more "bad" than in a typical season.

Pretty bad couple of days, but we have changed from regularly starting Ramon Santiago, Skip Schumaker, Brayan Pena, and Zack Cozart in the same lineup to having Votto, Bruce and Phillips back. That's a pretty drastic change.

Oh, and Mesoraco/Frazier/Billy still haven't really cooled off.

 
Anybody get less production from spare parts bench players and middle relief arms than us? Our last 6-7 players on roster are pretty far from actual MLB bodies.

 
Maybe the best win of the year last night. With all the injuries and the timing of the game, and the NL Central race, they showed a lot of resilience to come back for that win.

I was really annoyed by this team before I left for my trip a month ago, but coming back to see them play like this gives me hope they will be in this thing at the end.

Oh, and I apologize for ever doubting Hamilton. This kid is so much fun to watch, I would buy tickets just to see him play. Amazing!

My wife and I were at that game. Up underneath the scoreboard in the bleachers, but we were there none the less.

One of the best games I ever attended!

 
Down they go? Not a Reds fan, but live in Reds Country and in-laws are huge fans. I have heard them talking about throwing in the towel for the season. My inlaws are very finicky fans and would manage this team into the ground. But they are worried about not having the bats they need and pitching falling apart following the AS Break.

Well, the 2 best players from last year's offense are gone, the 3rd best is having a horrific season, and the 4th is also gone with injury. To be worried about the offense would be pretty logical.

It might be the best rotation in baseball though. I have no idea why they think the pitching would fall apart.

 
Was at the game today. Good to see Chapman brought in to get the last out in the 8th. Of course, when you are have dropped seven in a row and have zero offense, Price really had no choice after Broxton put a couple on.

1-0 wins are awesome and all that, but man, the offense is just brutal right now, with bad baserunning threatening to overshadow bad hitting, but hey, Hannahan is coming back.....

 
Are the Reds reaching a point in this season where they become sellers instead of buyers?

I'll be really pissed if they give up any one of quality for a .270 bat.

 
I would be shocked if they're sellers.

I think we probably botched our chance to buy with this stretch, but I wouldn't be pissed. We won't trade Stephenson and Winker is injured so there is no risk of losing those guys. All the prospects who are #3 and below are just wild cards at this point. Besides, the payroll could eventually be a problem, but until then it's not my money so I don't care.

 
I'd have to think they should be able to get something out of Alfredo Simon. Selling is probably the best option as I don't think the Rays will be selling Zobrist, and that's who I'd value the most as a trade option. Next best option is to probably trade one of Leake or Cueto to LAD and try and nab Van Slyke as I don't think they'd deal Pedersen. Definitely worst case is dealing for someone like Marlon Bryd.

What a weird game. Runners reaching on wild pitch/strikeouts, not even drawing a throw when breaking from third on a delayed double steal, extra balls on the field, extended shots of some hairy dude dancing in the seats, the winning team trotting out 5! Batters hitting below .240 in a DH game in August....

Still, I'll take that over last night for sure.

If Pena had managed to get gunned down at third too would that have counted as the cycle?
