How Clean is Your Chimney? (1 Viewer)

How clean is your chimney?  Mine is a little exposed because of it's age but it smells fine. The flue gets stuck and I find crazy things in there occasionally.   I want to get it going this weekend, so I think a thorough cleaning is in order.  I just hate to have someone up in there when I could probably do it myself.  I hope my Santa suit still fits.

Bare all along with a little decorative down at the base. Think 3-5 day stubble.

oh...I thought this was like the wallet thread?

I post this in envy of people with chimneys...

I have a gas fireplace with a blower. If I turn it all the way up and have the blower on, it might raise the temperature in that room a degree. Might.

Thought about replacing it with a pellet stove, but I still have young kids. Maybe later.

Do it now. I have small kids and have been burning fires since they were born. They learn to stay away.

I have an older house, and it will raise the temp in my family room about 5 degrees. Makes a huge difference on a cold winter day.

Do those see through covers with the blowers work well with regular wood?

Yeah. My regular fireplace has a blower and it will roast us out of the room if I turn it on. It's awesome.

Was having a problem in there a while back so I got this camera thing to check it out thoroughly.  Had to clean it out first to get the camera in.  Turned out everything was okay.  Works like a charm now.

I'm over due for that myself.  So the cleanout fixed your initial problem?  That's good news.

FWIW,  lay off the vicodin and eat some fiber GB.

Yep.  My kids learned to stay away at a very early age, even before they could walk.

I have a few friends who use a long heavy chain to clean out their chimneys.  They say you need to bang it hard against the sidewalls a few times and it's as a clean as a baby's butt.

Years ago my 6yo daughter and I were driving by the salt marshes at low tide.  My daughter commented that it smelled like the chimney.
