How do Teams Go From Worst to First...(and bring Fantasy Points along) (1 Viewer)

What are the common factors in the rise of teams like ARI, BUF, MIA and ATL?

It seems like some coaching changes really catch on fast, if their work in the offseason revamping the team is consistent with what the philosophy is.

Parcells/Sparano cleaned house and brought in a bunch of young players. It seems that they focused on upgrading the lines and building around the couple of skill players that they had.

Teams like OAK throw money at big name players, but don't seem to think about how all the pieces go together.

Any thoughts insights?

I think if you lack superstars, then you need to find hard working players you can coach up, rather than just throwing talent with 10 cent heads on the field.

There are a lot of talented players in the NFL, so the system and the coaches are a big difference maker.

The other thing to look at is (IMO) the two top positions on the field.

QB and LT

If you're team stinks, then get those two positions filled with the right people and then build from there.

What about paying a GM and Coach?

Are there examples of way overpaid coaches who are terrible? Or underpaid coaches who are good?

I am assuming that finding a great coach that works well with his GM is critical.

Allowing for the superstar exceptions, the talent level in the NFL is a lot closer than people like to think. Sometimes, all it takes is a new outlook (coach), a new qb, a new safety, etc.

Here's another simple example: Have a bad defense that gets shredded? Keep ten guys, add a monster DT, and that may change everything (and it may not - depends on the dynamics and chemestry of the unit, but we've seen time after time where one or two players come in and make a huge difference... NYJ this year is a great example.)

I think coaching philosophy and playcalling has ALOT to do with NFL success. And being smart enough to stay one step ahead of your competition and not being predictable.

Combine an outstanding coaching staff with average players and you have a playoff team. Combine outstanding players with average coaches and I bet teams miss more often than make the playoffs.

Or put another way; good coaches get average players to play to their best potential, but good players can't get average coaches to improve their play calling/game planning.
