How many states have you been to? Any all 50 folks? (2 Viewers)

After doing an Alaskan cruise last summer, and Hawaii a few times now, I started to get to thinking about how many states I have been to in my life, Airports don't count. Me and the family have a trip planned to just kinda road trip through New England in October this year, the wife basically planning all the stops and we didn't have anything for Rhode Island mapped out. Still don't. But we started talking about it and how it would be cool one day to say you've been to them all and basically said "Ok so we are going to RI even if we are just getting a donut:

I thought I had visited way more, but mostly its stuff on the coasts and the southwest and southeast. Really need to visit those midwest flyover states maybe later in life. Should be able to easily knock these off on the trip though:

ME, MA, RI, CT, VT, NH, NY - which would at least push me over 50%.

Not really a "goal" of mine, but is anyone else trying to do this?

26 ...

MD, DC, HI, VA, PA, NJ, NY, OH, IL, ID, AZ, CA, MA, CT, DE, WV, TN, NM, NV, VT, RI, TX, FL, NC, SC, LA...and the Virgin Islands

Whoa, glad you asked this. I didn't realize how many Ive been to. I would love to hit all 50.

East of the Mississippi, I'm only missing VT.

West of the Mississippi, I'm missing: LA, IA, ND, SD, NE, OK, WY, MT, ID, OR, and AK.

My family went to HI when I was 2, so technically I've been.

In retirement, I plan on taking a few months to drive around the country, so that's how I'll get most of those western states if I don't visit them before then.

Not - Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, SD/ND, Utah, New Mexico, Wisconsin (does seeing the coast from Lake Michigan count?), RI, NJ, Connecticut. I probably shouldn’t count Maine, Vermont, NH, and Massachusetts, as I was 1 year old.
So 37 or 33 depending how we count.

Same. Wife and I will probably rent a nice car and stay in cabins, hotel rooms, over the course of 3-4 months. One night in each state at least. I’d do a RV but she’s not on board with that plan and I’m not really sure I want to drive it that long.

DUDE! RI is so tiny but anyone that has ever been there keeps mentioning this place!

I’ve been to 35.
Still need NM, ND, SD, KS, OK, MO, AR, KY, TN, AL, MS, NJ, DE, WV, NC.

My wife’s family drove throughout the country when she was a child as both her parents were teachers and had summers off. She has visited 49 states, somehow missing Kentucky during those summer travels.

I have been to the following:
  • California (born and raised and still live here)
  • Hawaii (Maui and O'ahu - Going to big Island at the end of July)
  • Alaska (cruise and stopped in Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchican. Also been to Fairbanks to Delta Junction)
  • Nevada (Vegas of course)
  • Utah (St George and passed through going to Colorado)
  • Colorado (son goes to school in Colorado Springs - driven from Grand Junction to Co Springs a few times)
  • Oklahoma (visited wifes' family)
  • Utah (same road trip to Oklahoma to visit in-laws)
  • Arizona (baseball tournaments - Cardinal game)
  • New Mexico (same road trip to visit in-laws - long time in a van)
  • Texas (work - San Antonio, Midland, Odessa)
  • Nebraska (Omaha for College World Series)
  • Idaho (bought a lot for retirement in Hayden)
  • Washington (recruiting trip for my son in Spokane - also to Seattle for some Mariner games)
  • Oregon (softball tourney for my daughter)
  • Wisconsin (flew into Milwaukee to go to Chicago - hate O'Hare)
  • Illinois (visit family)
  • Minnesota (going to Vikings games)
  • Missouri (going to Royals games)
  • Louisiana (New Orleans for a work conference)
  • Alabama (daughter lives there now)
  • Tennessee (visited Nashville on one of the times visiting my daughter)
  • Florida (tagged along for a wife work trip, also spent time in St Augustine)
  • Pennsylvania (went to Pittsburgh for a Vikes/Steelers game)
  • New York (flew into Syracuse and went to Watertown for work)
  • Wyoming (there for work visiting gas plants in places in the middle of nowhere)
  • South Carolina (went to Savannah for a wedding)
  • Georgia (drove through on the way from Savannah to St Augustine, FL)

Shocked I got over half. I guess I need to go to the East Coast and do a trip up and down the coast and get all those little states in the fold.

I hear ya. My only time in AL for instance was just driving thru the panhandle to get to Mardi Gras, But we did stop somewhere so it counts!

Yeah, I have no interest in driving a big RV. I think we'll either rent a nice SUV/van or have purchased something new just before retirement to make the trip as comfortable as possible.

WI, IL, MO, PA, NY, IA, MI, IN, OH, WV, MN, ND, KY, TN, FL, NC, GA, AL, MS, LA, NV, WA, AZ, TX, OK, CO, MA, RI, CT, SC = 30

Yep. I was thinking rental but that could add up so a new vehicle might actually make more sense.

You’re missing out on bama. Gulf is nice, Huntsville has a lot going on. Catch a game in Tuscaloosa…

Do we have a thread on best things to do in different states?

I'm actually pretty convinced that I could find at least one place in each state that I could happily live, so finding something to check out for just a day or two on a trip sounds super easy...even in Alabama.

I mean I HEAR YA, but if i was to do that I'd probably venture more for Destin. I just can't, in good conscience to myself say I planned a trip to Alabama and that was the trip.

And the gulf is the gulf is the gulf right? I was based in Pensacola for a good 7 months and that was cool and all, but I'm more of an Ocean Beach guy than a Gulf/Lake/Pond/River

If i'm in the area? Sure I guess haha.

Yeah, I’ll take the ocean over the Gulf but fort Morgan is more our speed than Destin. Mexico beach was really nice along with the beach off Tyndall (we don’t like crowds)

I’m not sure I’d classify the Gulf with rivers or even a lake other than the Great Lakes. But I hear ya.

FL, GA, SC, NC, MI, AL, VA, TN, KY, WV, NJ, MD, DE, CT, NY, RI, MA, PA, OH, IN, WI, IL, IA, MO, AR, CO, KS, TX, OK, CA, NM

31

I'm at 40. Missing HI, AK, WA, OR, SD, NE, KS, OK, LA, AL. Basically just drove through RI so I could be argued down to 39 depending on criteria.

Wife and I plan on getting to 50, saving Alaska for the end.

And to talk about @dgreen point about finding a cool place to live in every state - if you are just visiting, there are dozens upon dozens of cool places to visit in every state. So thinking a state sucks and you don't want to visit you may be missing out on some incredible vacations.

This is part of the reason why I would rather vacation in the US than going to other countries. There are so many places/things to do that I don't even know about in my own country that I feel I ought to try out some of those before going to other countries. I mean, I get why going to other countries is cool too but a lot more expensive and worse flights..ha

They both have their place. Like absolutely there is tons to see and do here and it is easier and more approachable, but you aren't really getting a truly different experience like you would travellign abroad.

I’m at 30. Nothing special, but not bad considering my total was 4 when I graduated high school.

This subject has come up a lot lately for me because my father-in-law is going to Montana this summer to cross #50 off his list.

Similar here for me. Not the 30 number, for I am at 48, but the number of states seen before i was 18. I don't remember exactly, but it was probably the 6 New England states, and Florida for a total of 7

South Carolina has some of the best golf courses in the western hemisphere.

Oh haha I hear ya, just I remember distinctly being in Pensacola with my guy Kramer, who was from Wyoming and like "wow first time seeing the ocean" and had to tell him "Its not"

And he went on about all the "Beaches" he had been to before this so...lol, stuck with me

28, hoping to increase to 35 this time next year- Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama on one trip / Washington, Idaho, and Montana on another. The ones I'm most surprised I'm missing are Wisconsin, Louisiana, and Rhode Island / Connecticut (spent a lot of time in New England). While not at the top of the priority list Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon, both Dakota's, Wyoming, and Utah are somewhere on there.

That leaves Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Is there golf that could pull me to any of them? Aside from that or a sporting event, I'm not sure why I'd go to them.

Missing: AK, OR, ID, MT, WY, UT, SD, WI, LA, SC, NC, DE, CT, RI, NH, VT, MA & ME

So I've covered 32 so far.

Will be adding MA with a train ride through CT and RI in 2 weeks.

ETA: states where all I've done is drive through with no prolonged stay: NM, OH, AL, MN & NJ
