I don't speak for everyone, but I enjoy going to work - really couldn't imagine not having a job at this stage of my life.

Yeah like GM I basically have twins and spent the weekend with them. I also looked at my calendar tomorrow and it ain't bad at all. I love my wife and kids, but I have no qualms about going into the office tomorrow.

I turned 50 earlier this year. Sold my business about a year and a half ago after having it for 15 years. We do a lot of military work, and had about 40 employees at the time of the sale.

And yes, I could retire very comfortably right now, but they are still paying me well and I think I'd drive my wife crazy if I stayed home so I'm going to continue working for a while. And besides,  it's a lot more fun working since my stress level has decreased 100 fold since the sale ?

And I agree with you - I'm truly a great example of the American dream. Someday I'll write up my backstory for anyone interested, It's quite interesting, IMO.

Rules. I look forward to the write up.  It had to be an awesome feeling to go to a job knowing you don't actually have to go to a job.  I hope to be in that boat around 50, 55 maybe, and then just keep on working because why not.

This is fascinating to me.  You guys are living on the Lower East Side (high rent/trendy area) in NYC and supporting a family of four all on less than six figures?   Seems like that would be really difficult.

I'm right in the FFA bell-curve sweet spot. we've been in our spot for a long time so quite a lot below market rate (upstairs apt- same layout minus a private patio- pays 50% more than us) and both kids are finally in public school. but yes- really, really difficult.

Teacher, don't make much money. We have been in a pay freeze for 7 of the 10 years I have worked . Insurance is good, I am enjoying a snow day, get lots of time off. I will never make much money, but my time is worth a lot to me. I love my job. It rarely feels like work. Also, I am lucky that my wife is raking it in.

Also, we really do need to take location into account when thinking about incomes (no surprise I know) but I'll give a personal example.  I made a thread a few months ago about some interest I had in a gig in silicon valley.  I'm currently located in Baltimore (not exactly a low income/cost area) and while the job was a little bit more in scale, nothing like going from director to vp or anything.  The quoted salary range would have been an increase from my current gig of around 60%.  I knew that incomes fluctuated around the country, just no idea it was that extreme.  So $150k in NYC is really equal to $100k here in Baltimore and like $75k in the mid-west or South.

So let's keep that in mind you big city slickers who are ####### up the curve.  I hated people like you in college.

My personal income fluctuates between a base of 60k with bonuses and commissions that can get me to 125-150k a year. This year we went on an extended selling freeze. Also we had a baby so my wife won't go back to work (she's a teacher) for probably a couple more years. Also we are opening a small business that will likely be in the red from when we open (march) for at least a couple months. 

So yeah, spending your savings is super fun.

This is very true.

I know from comparing fees with dentist buddies in varying areas of the country that the midwest has some of the lowest, but their overheads for employees, rent on their space, etc.. all much higher.

So they could make more and still be on an equal footing.

I'd say in reality we have 4 or 5 > $1MM earners on the board. I'm not there, yet.

With a family of 4, $150k is prob paycheck to paycheck in any nice neighborhood around here - for a single dude, you can swing that and live decently.

Any nice suburb outside of NYC, pretend you're buying 3x income at $150k - $450k home, taxes alone are around $12k a year off the bat, and that isn't for anything all that nice by any means (def nothing like what you describe above). 

I've done the numbers left/right/sideways for a few years trying to determine best bang for buck while keeping commute under 1 hour door to door (which is coveted around here).

Highlands/Rumson/Fair Haven/Middletown in NJ provides it IMO. $1M gets you a decent house, taxes are around $20-$30k depending on factors, and the ferry gets you into Manhattan in 35 minutes, ferry is $700 a month though.

The bottom line from everything I've looked at is you need to earn at least $400-$500k to actually live comfortably in the NYC area. You can be okay on lesser amounts, but you def have to make sacrifices... Not easy getting ahead around these parts.

You also have a good deal on your living situation from what I understand, that isn't the expectation around here and far from the average. 

Hypothetically, a family of 4 looking for 1200 square feet in Manhattan or Brooklyn Heights (which I think most who live in a desirable area around here would call adequate, far from luxury at 1200 SF) is prob in the $60-$80k range a year. $400k and you come home with $250k - you're down to $170k before a single expense beyond rent. After all expenses, that prob brings you between $80-$120k of disposable income - so I think $400k ballpark is probably close to the cutoff per household to live comfortably. Below that and I think you have to make sacrifices here and there.

Here in the Bay Area suburbs that gets you a rental apartment or small rental house, some credit card debt, 6-10 year old cars, vacations that involve driving one those cars somewhere, and struggling to keep retirement or college savings contributions going.

Phoenix. Software and aerospace engineers. The vast majority of our folks make between $120k and $150k.

I don't find that interesting because if I was actually making that much scratch I'd be letting people know about it - and yes, I'm assuming most (or all) are lying.

I do find it interesting so many are willing to give details on their salary.  Maybe because I've worked so long in "Corporate America" but we pretty much never discuss our salaries.  My kids don't even know how much I make - I wish my wife didn't.
