Just curious as to what leagues feel is a fair amount of time to have for their picks during their live drafts. Do you penalize them for taking longer than the time allowed for their pick? How so?

I have a few live draft leagues where a few league members are notorious for timing out at least twice each draft. We have 100 seconds each pick. Is that too short of time?

Thanks guys

100 seconds is VERY generous - more than a minute and a half which some high stakes leagues use. Some use 60 seconds and that is really all that is needed.

You could combine - 60 seconds for first X rounds and then 90 seconds for balance of the draft

Depends whether this is strictly a friends league and whether people want to finish in a reasonable time or take all day

When a team times out - the pick should Immediately move to the next team - when they have picked go back to the team skipped and give them 5 or 10 seconds to make their pick - if they fail to pick go to next team - repeat/rinse/repeat

Several of my home town leagues enforce a penalty if a team is late more than once - That second pick goes to the end of the current round

If they are late a third time That pick goes to the END of the draft

Time clocks dont allow for passing out, shtick and rule changes.......especially when starting at 12:30 am. Not a fan of time clocks. Draft happens once a year....live it up.

Agreed! Having to be on the clock in a live draft would suck IMO. The draft is for relaxing and having fun....not to have to worry about being on the clock.

We allow 5 minutes/pick. This is our party, it lasts 6-7 hours. Longer than 5 minutes results in ridicule. Frequently going over 5 minutes results in a shot of tequila. :banned:

Use FanDraft software, which is great. 2 minutes is plenty. Have set so that if the team on the clock doesn't make pick in time, then it slides one pick after the next team that's on deck.

i tend to agree with the folks that dont mind how much time is taken.

drafting is fun. nothing is worse than the guy in your league (we all have em), who wants to set the record for shortest draft time. and he'll make comments about how long its taking the entire draft. whats the rush? relax, enjoy, have a beer.

i guess some guys think they are so uber-prepared that its like a gloating thing. each draft is different. most dont go as planned. adjusting to guys who are there or not there takes a bit of time.

i do 3 leagues and even this seems like too many at times. i've done more, but found too much conflict of interests took from the fun. and, i want to be able to commit the appropriate time to the leagues. maybe the guys who are in a rush are the ones who are in 16 leagues and they have draft after draft, i dont know.

I there's truth to the multiple league theory. I'm down to one local league and the draft is much more fun again.

We have a clock and it is set at sixty seconds. If you don't pick before time runs out u do a shot of warm rack tequila. Clock is reset and you have another sixty seconds that runs you get another shot and so on. Creates a great atmosphere with everyone else counting down the last ten seconds yet no one ever loses a draft position. The threat of warm rack tequila keeps the draft moving.

With 12 teams and 36 rounds (11 starters IDP league) we have to keep things 60 seconds or less. As it is, we run 5+ hours. Which I never minded, but some online people just sitting at their PC by themselves always seem to complain... lol

Overall we found the 'internet' drafting has lessened the whole draft experience. It was great when all 12 owners were in the same room drafting, then no one had a clock and things moved along and no one noticed the time pass. But with a number of people moving out of town and now just stuck drafting via PC it isn't quite the same.

Agreed, but the first four hours are spent golfing, so we've got to cut the picks to two minutes. It's a relatively soft two minutes depending on the liquor. Have had 12 hour drafts but those centered on a pig pickin....might be about time for another one of those! :banned:

We allow 3 minutes from rounds 1-6, 2 minutes from rounds 7-12, and 1 minute from rounds 13-18. We take breaks at those intervals. The early picks are all fun and you need some time for trades, but by the end everyone is all set with the clowning around.

First few rounds should generally go quickly because people should know who they like in the early rounds and not take all day deciding between two sleeper picks. Round 6 is when it starts to get to a screeching halt. We don't have any time limit - just public ridicule and insults. We finished a 10 team 15 rounder in about 3.5 hours which was pretty damn good for us and that was even with one guy on skype having to type his picks in as he heard our picks on the mic.

If I had only 2 mins to pick then it would have to be me alone at the computer to be efficient - having a room full of friends doesn't allow me to totally focus and I would consistently have buyers remorse in the later rounds and maybe even the middle rounds because I was forced to pull the trigger and didn't consider a bye, QB situation, backup situation or other factors.

I'd rather be satisfied with my draft, relax, and have a good time with friends than be on a timer and out of there in 2 hours pissed that I took a few guys who don't look as good an hour after I pick them.
