I used to think that I was merely slightly above average. But as I meet more people over the course of my life, and come across more idiots on the internet, I find that I'm so much smarter than most people.
It certainly seems out of balance. The internet is a refuge for ####birds. One thing I've noted about the trucker who is smarter than the rocket scientist is that he never ever wastes time online. Not so much for the other guy. He wastes entire days with his head in a monitor.

There are many people in the world that don't even have access to primary education. I think it's safe to say most of us is well above the world average.

What percent of people in the world have graduated from college? I would guess under 25%

It's less than 10%, but educated and smart are different.

Could always go down the "what defines smart" route. And as to brilliance, I am not sure that is really the same thing as smart. My father for example is smart, but hardly a genius - but he played 50 years as the bass clarinetist in the baltimore symphony as was acclaimed as one of the best at his craft for two generations. That's pretty brilliant. I am probably "smarter" for what thats worth (not much).

In terms of metrics, I know what my IQ is/was (was very much the same from testing throughout grade and high school and a couple more recent tests that I just doodled online, real ones, and very close to the same). I also got about 100 points higher in math than english on the SATs - yet my whole career and basis for my professional success are my communication skills (and I've forgotten most of the math).

What does that say? I'm one of the better communicators I know and have a specialty in public speaking not to mention a lot of writing, but my "test" would show me as merely above average.
Same here. I got 720V 800M and 85% of my job is corresponding with clients through e-mail, so I lean on my writing all day, every day. Almost never use math any more. Even here, no one here knows me as the math nerd, they know me as the guy who writes funny stories. And frankly, these days, I probably am far better with a keyboard than I am with a protractor, but that's absolutely NOT who I once was.
funny thing for me was that I always thought of myself as a much better math student than English, english being behind match, social studies and science. Got only a 590 SAT for english. IQ tests were far higher, but obviously don't have a breakdown.

But, I was awarded the english award upon graduating high school (I wasn't paying attention because I thought if anything I'd get math, science or social studies) and had to be alerted by my friends to stop ####### around. Now, my entire career and livelihood is based on communications.

No question about it, but if "smart" isn't fostered or nurtured with training and education it may not ever be realized.

Much in the way that Usain Bolt was born fast, but if he'd chosen not to work out, train, and develop his craft he may have never realized his greatness.

It's pretty tough to assess raw intelligence, or even assign any tangible value to it really.

I'm smart in a kind of odd sort of way...There are lots of people who are smarter than me at various things, but I think if you could somehow take all the skills on earth and give everyone an aptititude for all those things, and sum them up, I'd score WAY above most.

i.e. I'm in finance for a living. The guy across from me is just flat out better at numbers. Period. Always will be. But he can't change a tire to save his life. Mechanical concepts are lost on him. I'm definately with you renaissance men. I feel like I have a much broader skill set than most. I mean, I work with numbers, am good with carpentry, electronics, cars, engines, flying, etc. I learn things really quickly, and stuff I find interesting sticks forever.

The biggest problem I have is that no matter what I do, part of me gets bored. That's honestly my greatest limiting factor career-wise. If I'm doing hard-analysis, I want to be creative. If I'm doing somethig more project management oriented, I want some analysis.

I work at a college as a janitor even though I feel like I'm smarter than most of the people who go there. Sometimes I see an equation written on a blackboard like half an equation and... I just figure it out.

I'm smart enough to know better but dumb enough not to care.

As Sinn Fein said, smart is under defined. Does it mean intelligent, responsible, diligent, intellectual, creative, etc?

I have always been intelligent (gifted program, advanced/AP classes, 95th % on SATs, attended top 5 public university, IQ over 140) but have not always been responsible or diligent (drank 6-7 nights a week in college, had semesters that looked like scenes from Wolf of Wall Street, barely hit the minimum GPA to graduate). I also chose a career (sales) and location (AZ) that did not challenge me intellectually but pushed me in other areas. My success in work, money, relationships, and health has been a roller coaster over the past 10 years but it has been a memorable ride.

I voted Gump.

Average to below average

I've been able to breeze through every level of schooling I've ever attempted and can pass exams and such with little prep time. If someone tells me to learn something specific I can do so fairly easily without help. But I'm lacking in general knowledge and street smarts.

I have considered this. But there are a lot more dumb people than smart people. Aren't the dummies reproducing much faster than those with higher intelligence?

I'm not saying I'm extremely smart, I'm just saying relative to the population, I'm way ahead of most other people.

Not to be a ####, but I think we are all grading ourselves a little high.

We can be honest, 16% of this form is not gifted/nearly gifted.

Of those listed I totally buy Instinctive on that list.

Not buying Chet at all. Dude can't even keep my dating life straight and sends Secret Santa gifts like 2 years too late. :P

This is me.

I need a revolving job. I can do just about anything at an extremely high level for 6 months to a year. I just get bored and need a new challenge. The problem is I'm making enough money now that I can't just switch fields anymore.

ETA - Like you, I'm also horrifically poor at spelling.

How do you (OP) quantify smart?
Elon Musk types = gifted

1600 SAT score or top 2% MIT grad type or High School dropout offered job at Google in engineering = extremely above

Strong critical thinking, problem solving abilities, quick grasp of directions, smart (common sense, book smart, street smart, etc.) but not at the level of the first two tiers = well above

1960 on the SAT's (newer ones out of 2400--taken in 2006)

96th percentile on the ASVAB

Voted "above average" for two reasons:

1. I'm awful at math and just have a hard time grasping the advanced concepts, have a hard time considering myself smarter than "above average" when my brain isn't great at reasoning out such a large portion of problems that would be presented on any standard IQ test. Special awareness, pattern recognition, logic problems, etc. I'm aces. Straight advanced math? I suck.

2. Graduated HS in 2007, college in 2011 with a lackadaisically earned History/Polical Science degree. I say that because it didn't take much effort or even attendance, despite a high GPA. Attended college on an Honors scholarship that took care of a portion of tuition and required advanced writing courses and a 3-semester long final thesis in my major. But truly, since then my mind has done nothing but decay. I'm an avid reader, but mostly sci-if/fantasy. Although I'm a gifted writer, I haven't written anything that wasn't on a message board in years.

The brain is definitely a "use it or lose it" organ in many ways. I can feel my brain working slower than when I was in college, the way I approach problems and questions is less refined and generally it takes more thinking nowadays. And I don't do any drugs, period. I just know my mind works more slowly now as I'm out of practice really using it.

goodposting

close to how I am

Chet is legit IMO. We've discussed IQ societies in the past. Although I forget what his career field is.

Are you paid by the paragraph?
It's all about bullet points, son.
Bullet points are for rookies. I make my hay combining bullet points with indentation, #####.
Tough talk from someone with a more than mediocre lack of accomplishments. What did you rank yourself?

I ranked myself too high, but once I can work "more than mediocre lack" into a sentence I'll be back to throw you off a cliff.
