I have no statistical proof but I always look for those stories about QBs and WRs/TEs that have struck up a close relationship. You know, spent some time in the off season working on timing and patterns, how they will adjust if they see "this or that." Think the early days of Peyton/Marvin.
Recently we have the Romo-Witten deal and the wishful thinking of Cutler/Sheffler roomie deal. Someone posted a great inside article recently on how difficult it was for Greg Jennings (from his perspective) to gain Favre's trust - but once he had it, look at what happened last year.
Yes - I know, I expect some grief on this, but I think human nature plays a big part. Yeah they are professionals, but they too look first for the people they trust - and you gain trust by building relationships and working on stuff together.
Just my two cents - anyone else interested in making this post a place for locals to drop tidbits about this kind of stuff? I check Pro Football Weekly for the whispers section, etc. but understand that some of the info may be suspect, I don't know why - just heard that.
