Close to deists than to what?

In this author's opinion, he's closer to group A than group B (which is unnamed in your quote).  Notice she didn't say he part of group A, just closer to it.  That doesn't mean that any characteristics of group A can be attributed ipso facto to Newton as you appear to suggest.

If I say that you are closer to a billy goat than to an ant, and that goats have horns and pee on their beard, have I really attributed those traits to you?  "Closer" is not a criteria I'd use when trying to apply the transitive property.

Since we're sharing quotes:

“Well before 1675, Newton had become an Arian in the original sense of the term. He recognized Christ as a divine mediator between God and man, who was subordinate to the Father who created him.”  Richard Westfall, Never at Rest: A Biography of Isaac Newton (Cambridge,1980), 315.
Even as an Arian, he's still a heretic. You're not helping your argument that he was a christian at all.

Dear friends, Take this moment, If you want to accept Jesus Christ free gift of salvation, pray this from your heart, humbly to God:

“DEAR LORD JESUS, I BELIEVE THAT YOU DIED ON THE CROSS AND ROSE FROM THE DEAD FOR MY SINS. I ASK YOU TO PLEASE COME INTO MY HEART AND FORGIVE ME FOR MY SINS, TAKE ME TO BE WITH YOU WHEN I DIE. I NOW RECEIVE YOU AS MY LORD AND SAVIOR. THANK YOU FOR SAVING ME. IN JESUS NAME AMEN.”

If you have placed your faith in Jesus Christ and meant it with all of your heart, you are now a child of God and will go to heaven when you die.

Was Newton any more or less an authority on the subject of life after death and invisible beings than the next guy?  Than you, or me?

What is the criteria you use when you deem someone credible enough to tell you about gods and their sons?  Why is one person more credible than the next when deeming a man to be divine or kind of (not really) divine?

You have to look beyond the gibberish and see what he really means, the message. Get to the real stuff

Why didn't you just start the thread with this post?

I thought about it, but I'm going with clicking my heels together three times and saying "There's no place like home."

Have you ever considered why god would base the determination of whether you exist for eternity in heaven or hell on something that is easier for gullible people to believe than it is for everyone else to believe? What is it about gullibility that is appealing to god?

Did you really just defend Newton as a Christian with something that described him as an Arian?

Also what does it matter what Newton thought?
If I recall correctly, his point was we can thank christianity for calculus.

Given his follow up argument, we can thank Arians for it.

He was religious, brought up as Lutheran, but he seemed to distance himself from both catholicism and protestantism. A lot of what we know about his religious beliefs comes from the Theodicee he wrote as a response to Bayles positions on god. An obvious theist, but his positions seem to neither confirm nor deny the divinity of Jesus. He goes so far to say that Jesus is the source and center of election of god's grace, but that seems to be as far as he was willing to go in establishing who or what he believed Jesus to be. An Arian could say the same thing. That's not to say I think he was an Arian too. Just that I don't know him to be a christian anymore than I know him to be an Arian. He's even been called a Gnostic by some.

And what does our loving God do with those who don't place their "faith in Jesus Christ and meant it with all their heart?"

In the book of Numbers, when the Lord commanded Moses and the Israelites to take vengeance on the Midianites and kill every man, did the Midianites go to hell once they were killed? They never had the opportunity to know Jesus and be saved, so was hell their only option?

Are all people that lived before Jesus came to earth in hell?

Dear Lord Baby Jesus, or as our brothers in the South call you: 'Jee-suz'. We thank you so much for this bountiful harvest of Dominos, KFC, and the always delicious Taco Bell. I just want to take time to say thank you for my family: my two beautiful, beautiful, handsome striking sons, Walker: Texas Ranger, or TR as we call him. And, of course, my red hot smokin' wife Carley, who is a stone cold fox, who if you would rate her ### on 100, it would easily be a 94. I also want to thank you for my best friend and teammate, Cal Naughton Jr, who's got my back no matter what...

Dear Lord Baby Jesus, we also thank you for my wife's father Chip. We hope that you can use your Baby Jesus powers to heal him and his horrible leg. It smells terrible and the dogs are always botherin' with it.

Dear Tiny Infant Jesus...Dear tiny Jesus in your golden-fleece diapers, with your tiny, little, fat, balled-up fists...

Dear Eight Pound, Six Ounce, Newborn Baby Jesus, don't even know a word yet, just a little infant, so cuddly, but still omnipotent. We just thank you for all the races I've won and the $21.2 million dollars... LOVE THAT MONEY, that I have accrued over this past season. Also due to a binding endorsement contract that stipulates I mention PowerAde at each grace, I just wanna say that PowerAde is delicious and it cools you off on a hot summer day and we look forward to PowerAde's release of mystic mountain blueberry.

Thank you, for all your power and your grace, Dear Baby God, Amen.

When people stop believing in God, they won’t believe in nothing, they’ll believe in anything.

Institutional, formal religion that gets full of itself is an age-old problem.

Christians who find a calling from the Lord to truly become great, are going to find themselves breaking the religious rules of institutions, in the process of obeying calls to the desire and will of God. These calls are based upon love, not upon externals. And those with little or no love just can’t understand.

You'd think god would just text these people now instead of calling.

Salvation is about God saving your from your sins through His only Son and placing your faith in Him believing that He died on the cross and rose from the dead for your sins.  It's easy, Why wouldn't anyone do it?  Placing your faith in Christ doesn't make you gullible, it makes you wise.

Sounds like you don't understand the definition of gullible. Pasted it below to help you, and put in bold the words in your post and the definition that should help you connect the dots.

gul·li·ble

easily persuaded to believe something; credulous.

It's easy to believe there was a guy walking around on water, rising from the dead, and floating up into the clouds?

So if I buy a Chick Fil-A franchise, I'm automatically in, right? But can I get chicken biscuits on Sundays in heaven?

Chick Fil-A won't even consider you for franchising unless you can show them the word "Jesus" embroidered on your heart.

And of course you can get chicken biscuits on Sunday's in heaven. That's why you can't get them on Sunday's on earth. It's the other six days of the week that suck in heaven. They're all potluck days. Like Sundays are earth.

If countless televangelists and pastors can so easily invoke J-HEEEEE-sus and reap a windfall of cash and young boys, I think I could land a chicken franchise.

I appreciate the joking around about it, but in all seriousness you have a better chance of become a televangelist than you do of becoming a Chick Fil A franchisee. They literally interview family, friends, neighbors, church members, pastors, former pastors, et al.... going back years and years of your life, to ensure they're not getting a fake christian.

Wow. I need to learn more about this.

My stepdad in CT, every time he visits says he wants to see more Chick Fil-A's up north. Now I've got a good explanation for him.

Religion.

Loyalty to the company isn’t the only thing that matters to Cathy, who wants married workers, believing they are more industrious and productive. One in three company operators have attended Christian-based relationship-building retreats through WinShape at Berry College in Mount Berry, Ga. The programs include classes on conflict resolution and communication. Family members of prospective operators–children, even–are frequently interviewed so Cathy and his family can learn more about job candidates and their relationships at home. “If a man can’t manage his own life, he can’t manage a business,” says Cathy, who says he would probably fire an employee or terminate an operator who “has been sinful or done something harmful to their family members.”

The parent company asks people who apply for an operator license to disclose marital status, number of dependents and involvement in “community, civic, social, church and/or professional organizations.”

But Danielle Alderson, 30, a Baltimore operator, says some fellow franchisees find that Chick-fil-A butts into its workers’ personal lives a bit much. She says she can’t hire a good manager who, say, moonlights at a strip club because it would irk the company. “We are watched very closely by Chick-fil-A,” she says. “It’s very weird.”

Is it legal? There are no federal laws that prohibit companies from asking nosy questions about religion and marital status during interviews. Most companies don’t because it can open them up to discrimination claims, says James Ryan, a spokesman for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Chick-fil-A has more freedom to ask whatever it wants of franchisees because they are independent contractors and not necessarily subject to federal employment discrimination laws. (Employees, however, may sue under those laws.)

Well I guess that means the pimply faced jerkoff making your fries isn’t pumping off into them, because he’ll consider it such a sin.

Just amazing how cooky religion makes people.

If you're a gullible person, then yes.

You realize that the Bible was written by the actual eyewitnesses to the events right?  And the historical writings from Christ's Day and shortly thereafter line up with the Bible.

You realize I've disagreed with this claim countless times already in this thread, right?

Even if this were true (and it's not, but that's really an argument of the degree and severity of the flaws), it wouldn't matter. There are many works of fiction that line up with known history.

If I choose to believe some internet guy named Paddington, you are correct.

Here is an excuse for all the religious lies... particularly when they know their words are illogical and false... they are excused.

3. It is for this reason that divine revelation must be considered morally necessary so that those religious and moral truths which are not of their nature beyond the reach of reason in the present condition of the human race, may be known by all mean readily with a firm certainty and with freedom from all error.

:lmao:

What were Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John's full names?  So I can look them up and learn about their place in history.

Paul, I got.  He was a historical figure, but never claimed to have met Jesus in person.  All of his letters were written decades AFTER Jesus supposedly died.

Also interesting that the gospel guys above wrote their stories decades AFTER Paul...

Now you guys have to intrude on Thanksgiving also? Horrible.

Where in the bible does it say to pray this prayer?
Romans 10:9,10-13 is clear that:

Ro 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
11 For the Scripture says, "Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame."
12 ¶ For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him.
13 For "whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved."

You can do that through prayer.
