Hurricane Joaquin (1 Viewer)

Reading the discussion at WeatherGuys.com and trying to intuit what it all means, my take is that it's still most likely to turn NE and go out to sea, but that there's still at least a little confusion and the storm isn't behaving 100% as expected so far.

So maybe a small chance it still hits the East Coast. But if I had to bet on an East Coast hit I'd probably need like 15-1 or 20-1 odds to take the bet.

Not a weather forecaster, and didn't even stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

I went from watching>concerned>start prep>time to test generator?>get beer>screw all those except the get beer part.

My line of thinking exactly!

Sheik, any truth that in the latest models it's turned a little more east?
Nope. This Latin wrecking ball is headed out to sea. Even if it is slightly further east than anticipated, it's still heading well out to sea. No worries on this storm.

We East Coasters may not have to worry about this thing (sounds like probably not, but not a done deal yet), but those poor folks in the Bahamas are getting scoured into the sea by this thing. There are a few islands that have probably been under 120+mph winds now for more than 24 straight hours, with no end in sight.
I guess that's the trade-off for the beautiful sunshine, clear water, and sandy beaches they get for the other 10 months out of the year...
A girl at work has been saying she's going to the Bahamas tomorrow morning. I told her that the hurricane is pounding that place. She said, "Ehh... it'll be gone by the time we get there."

I'm looking forward to hearing how her trip went.
I read Nassau should be fine. Sunny right now and only 20 mph winds into tomorrow. Hurricane wont hit there.
I must admit, I know nothing about the Bahamas. I just assumed it was all getting hit.

sort of Joaquin related I guess, but we are forecast for 15" of rain this weekend. I will be working at a big beer festival (held outdoors) tomorrow, so that will be fun.

storm seems to be more hype than anything...on to the next fake crisis...
A Cat 4 hurricane along the east coast is going to get hype. And deservedly so.
If they don't hype it and people ignore it, that's when it hits and becomes a disaster.

Katrina was like the 4th storm of the season in the gulf, how many people could have used more hype?

On Friday morning they were predicting 13-18 inches in Charleston for the weekend. Right now the peninsula is closed. You can not get downtown.

I never understood this line of thinking.

So you'd rather them not talk about it until the last minute and something bad happens? Or would you rather it have lived up to the hype and caused millions of dollars worth of damage?

Stay safe Mj. They are saying we could get up to 21 inches here in the midlands.

Feels like it hasn't stopped raining here (Richmond) in weeks. Hard rain all day and all night.
Yep. Wife and daughter just left to go walk dogs at the shelter. Gave wife my raincoat and wished them well. I'm gonna go to a brewery or something. Maybe up there, maybe here, maybe down in Va Beach. Good to have all these options. :banned:

Hopefully not leaving the house anytime soon. I've recorded 8 inches in the last 40 hours, and it's not letting up.
Hanging in there GB? We've been getting hammered for the past 16 hours. A record setter no doubt.

The good news is that the heavy stuff is starting to thin out.

Some of the images and video from the area are astonishing to me. I never thought I would see this here.

Upstate SC report: It's wet. Very wet. Good God, make it stop wet.

We didn't get it nearly as hard as the coastal or midlands, but it has been crazy the past 48 hours.

Reports off of Facebook are saying that there are Blackhawks and police helicopters flying around the Lake Murray dam. They released some water out of it earlier today and I think they are preparing to open the gates again.

If something were to happen to the dam, and I don't think /hope that it doesn't, Columbia could be in some serious trouble.

At 11am I had recorded 15.5 inches. I had a new roof put on last week and last night limbs from the neighbor's house slammed down on it. I didn't see any damage. I had a little water seep under the garage door, but it only made it about two inches in. I've lived here since '98 and ridden out several hurricanes ... never had enough water for that. Streets everywhere blocked off and downtown is off limits. They have police at all bridges/roads leading in to keep people out.

I have a friend from high school that lives in Denver. I called him yesterday to see if his mom needed anything. She's elderly and her house backs up to the main creek that runs through my town. Her street was blocked off due to the creek rising. She had left for higher ground with a friend. He called this morning and asked me to go to the house and take pictures to see if he can determine the damage. The back yard was under at least 1 foot of water and you could see a water line all around the house indicating water would have gotten inside and the manhole cover in front of the house was overflowing into the street with sewage! I'm sure there will be plenty of stories like this.

Bad News: camping trip was postponed (and we lost our deposit)

Good News: Yesterday was a great day for 8U girls softball!
